We propose a sliding surface design method for linear systems with mismatched uncertainties in the state space model. In terms of LMIs, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a linear sliding surface such that the reduced-order equivalent sliding mode dynamics restricted to the linear sliding surface is not only stable but completely invariant to mismatched uncertainties. We give an explicit formula of all such linear switching surfaces in terms of solution matrices to the LMI existence condition. We also give a switching feedback control law, together with a design algorithm. Additionally, we give some hints for designing linear switching surfaces guaranteeing pole clustering constraints or linear quadratic performance bound constraints. Finally, we give a design example in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
Recently, sliding mode control(SMC) method has been investigated for control of building structures under earthquake loadings. SMC keeps responses of a structure in sliding surface while the structure is stable. This control method uses both linear controller and nonlinear controller such as bang-bang controller. This paper presents vibration control of a structure using saturated sliding mode controller, whose maximum conrtol force is limited. The effectiveness of SMC method with controler saturation is investigated based on two performance evaluation criteria: root mean square(RMS) and maximum values of floor drifts and accelerations. Simulation results indicate that SMC method is effective in reduction of displacement and acceleration utilizing the saturated controller's capacity efficiently.
This paper features about the modeling and design of a fast output sampling feedback controller for a smart Timoshenko beam system for a SISO case by considering the first 3 vibratory modes. The beam structure is modeled in state space form using FEM technique and the Timoshenko beam theory by dividing the beam into 4 finite elements and placing the piezoelectric sensor/actuator at one location as a collocated pair, i.e., as surface mounted sensor/actuator, say, at FE position 2. State space models are developed for various aspect ratios by considering the shear effects and the axial displacements. The effects of changing the aspect ratio on the master structure is observed and the performance of the designed FOS controller on the beam system is evaluated for vibration control.
In this study, dynamic characteristics of an end-capped hull structure with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators are studied. Finite element modeling is used to obtain practical governing equation of motion and boundary conditions of smart hull structure. Modal analysis is conducted to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the hull structure. Piezoelectric actuators are attached where the maximum control performance can be obtained. Active controller based on Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) theory is designed to suppress vibration of smart hull structure. It is observed that closed loop damping can be improved with suitable weighting factors in the developed LQG controller.
In this paper, an improved integral variable structure regulation controller is designed by using a special integral sliding surface and a disturbance observer for the improved regulation control of highly nonlinear rigid robot manipulators with prescribed output performance. The sliding surface having the integral state with a special initial condition is employed in this paper to exactly predetermine the ideal sliding trajectory from a given initial condition to the desired reference without any reaching phase. And a continuous sliding mode input using the disturbance observer is also introduced in order to effectively follow the predetermined sliding trajectory within the prescribed accuracy without large computation burden. The performance of the prescribed tracking accuracy to the predetermined sliding trajectory is clearly investigated in detail through the two theorems, together with the closed loop stability. The design of the proposed regulation controller is separated into the performance design and robustness design in each independent link. The usefulness of the algorithm has been demonstrated through simulation studies on the regulation control of a two-link robot under parameter uncertainties and payload variations.
A robust position control system for a BLDC motor using new sliding mode control strategy is presented. Using the new variable structure system, reaching phase problem is eliminated and performance is largely improved. The simulation results show the validity of proposed scheme.
In the VSS control, reaching phase and chattering problem are the main disadvantages. A simple nonlinear sliding surface is proposed to cope with the reaching phase. The chattering problem is alleviated by almost continuous control with the compensation using the infinite closed loop.
A three-level decoupled sliding mode controller is developed to achieve asymptotic stability for a class of sixth-order nonlinear systems. The sixth-order system is decoupled into three subsystems according to the structure of the whole system. Each subsystem has a separate control target in the form of a sliding surface. The information of the third sliding surface is transferred to the second one through an intermediate variable and the information of the second sliding surface is transferred to the first one through another intermediate variable. Consequently, the controller designed on the basis of the first sliding surface can make three subsystems move toward their sliding surfaces, respectively. The three-level decoupled sliding mode controller is applied to the double-inverted pendulum problem where the zero stable states are required.

Surface relief holograms are fabricated by means of irradiation of laser interference patterns. The diffraction efficiency and the surface relief depth depend on the writing energy and the polarization of the writing laser beam. This structure is very stable at temperatures under glass transition temperature $T_g$ and can be erased by heating above $T_g$. We proposed a new technique to control the surface relief structure. The electric charge was deposited on the surface relief grating in a corona-depositing poling setup in an oven. The first-order diffraction efficiency measured before and after corona discharge increased from about 0.24 % to about 28 %. This diffraction efficiency increase is mainly caused by the increase of the relief depth caused by the electric charge. The relief depth is increased from 20 nm to 350 nm by corona charging. .
This paper presents sliding mode control(SMC) method using target variation rate of Lypunov Function. SMC keeps the response of structure in sliding surface where structure is stable. It can design both linear controller and bang-bang controller. Linear control of previous research, however, can not make most of the performance of controller, because it is designed to satisfy the condition that the variation rate of Lyapunov function is minus. Also, incase of bang-bang controller, unnecessary large control force is generated. Presented method can utilize the capacity of controller efficiently by prescribing the target variation rate of Lyapunov function. Numerical simulation results indicate that the presented control methods can reduce the peak response larger than linear control, and it has control performance equivalent to bang-bang control.
