  • Surface reaction occurs at a certain surface temperature when a catalyst is heated up in a reactive mixture. If homogeneous ignition does not occur, a steady state is observed because the heat produced by the surface reaction is balanced with the heat loss caused by convection, conduction and radiation. The present paper treats the effects of pressure on the surface temperature at the steady state. Hydrogen and oxygen are used as reactants and nitrogen as an inert gas. A spherical platinum catalyst of 1.5 mm in diameter is sustained in the chamber with two wires of 0.1 mm in diameter. As results, there exists a maximum steady temperature at a certain relative hydrogen concentration which increases with total pressure. At the steady state, it can be approximated that the heat release is estimated by the mass transfer considering the effect of natural convection. The experimental results are explained qualitatively by the approximation.

  • A surface acoustic wave signal processing device using the silicon surface state is presented and shown capable of storing a reference signal and later correlating another signal with the stored reference. The device memory consists of the storage of the spatial 2k pattern of an acoustic wave as stored charges in the surface state of silicon surface. Results of experiments are presented which characterize the operation of device. Simpliied models for charging process and nonlinear acoustoelectric interactions based on consideration of single surface state at the surface of silicon The validity of simplified model has been qualitatibely confirmed with experimental results and the application of this device to aprogrammable matched filter of communication is considered.

  • A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study of the root surface changes was carried out in advanced periodontal disease. The results obtained were summerized as follow; 1. The root surface of cementoenamel junction of healthy root showed smooth surface, while the root surface of diseased state showed covering of deposits which regareded as a course of calcification. 2. At the mid-portion of the root, the regular cemental projection were observed on the healthy root surface and on the root surface of diseased state, cemental projection showed relatively irregular pattern. 3. On the root surface which consist of wall of periodontal pocket, there were various deposits which could be considered as subgingival calculus, bacterial plaque and epithelial attachment remnant. 4. The bottom area of the pathologic pocket, tearing altered collagen fibers were seen on the root surface. 5. At the apical portion of root surface, calcified fibers ran parallel to the root surface in healthy tooth and the fiber bundles of periodontal ligament were seen in the diseased state.

  • This paper presents a practical approach for surface reconstruction from unoriented point clouds. Instead of estimating local surface orientation, we first generate a set of depth images from the input point clouds, and a coarse mesh is then generated based on them by space carving techniques. The resultant mesh is progressively refined by local mesh refinement and optimization according to surface distance measure. A manifold mesh approximating the input points within an given tolerance is finally obtained. Our approach is easy to implement, but has the ability to outputs high quality meshes in different resolutions. We show that the proposed approach is not sensitive to several types of data disfigurement and is able to reconstruct models robustly from variance input data.

  • Recent progress in both low pretilt and high pretilt defect free C1 surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) devices is reviewed. First, by numerical calculation to investigate the balance between surface azimuthal anchoring energy and bulk elastic energy within the confined chevron layer geometry of C1 and C2, it is possible to achieve a zigzag free C1 state by low azimuthal anchoring alignment with a low pretilt angle. The critical azimuthal anchoring coefficient for defect free C1 state is calculated. Its relationship with elastic constant, chevron angle as well as surface topography effect are also discussed. Second, using $5^{\circ}$ oblique SiO deposition alignment method a defect free, large memory angle, high contrast ratio and bistable C1 SSFLC display, which has potential for electronic paper applications has also been developed. The electrooptical properties and bistability of this device have been investigated. Various aspects of defect control are also discussed.

  • A grooved surface with anisotropic wettability was fabricated on a silicon substrate using photolithography, reactive ion etching, and a KOH etching process. The contact angles (CAs) of water droplets were measured and compared with the theoretical values in the Cassie state and Wenzel state. The experimental results showed that the contact area between a water droplet and a solid surface was important to determine the wettability of the water. The specimens with native oxide layers presented CAs ranging from $71.6^{\circ}$ to $86.4^{\circ}$. The droplets on the specimens with a native oxide layer could be in the Cassie state because they had relatively smooth surfaces. However, the CAs of the specimens with thick oxide layers ranged from $33.4^{\circ}$ to $59.1^{\circ}$. This indicated that the surface roughness for a specimen with a relatively thick oxide layer was higher, and the water droplet was in the Wenzel state. From the CA measurement results, it was observed that the wetting on the grooved surface was anisotropic for all of the specimens.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized using catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Oxygen plasma treatment was applied to modify surface state of the CNTs synthesized for improvement of field emission performance. Surface state of the plasma treated CNTs was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface states of the CNTs were changed as a function of plasma treatment time. The oxygen related carbon shift was moved toward higher binding energy with the plasma treatment time. This result implies that the oxygen plasma treatment changes the surface state effectively. While any shift in carbon 1s peak was not detected for the as grown CNTs, oxygen related carbon shift was detected for the plasma treated CNTs. Carbon shift implies that closed CNT tips were opened by the oxygen plasma and reacted with oxygen species. Since the field emission occurs at pentagons or dangling bonds of the CNT tips, the increase of carbon-oxygen bonds plays an important role in field emission behavior by increasing the number of electron emission sites resulting in improvement of the field emission performance.

  • The non-uniform distribution of contamination on insulator surface has appreciable effects on flashover voltage, and corresponding researches are valuable for the better selection of outdoor insulation. In this paper, two typical types of porcelain and glass insulators which are widely used in ac lines were taken as the research subjects, and their corrections of AC flashover voltage under non-uniform pollution were studied. Besides, their flashover characteristics under different ratio (T/B) of top to bottom surface salt deposit density (SDD) were investigated, including the analysis of flashover voltage, surface pollution layer conductivity and critical leakage current. Test results gave the modified formulas for predicting flashover voltage of the two samples, which can be directly applied in the transmission line design. Also, the analysis delivered that, the basic reason why the flashover voltage increases with the decrease of T/B, is due to the decrease of equivalent surface conductivity of the whole surface and the decrease of critical leakage current. This research will be of certain value in providing references for outdoor insulation selection, as well as in proposing more information for revealing pollution flashover mechanism.

  • In this work, effects of carbon matrix on sliding friction and wear behavior of four kinds of C/C have been investigated against 40 Cr steel ring mate. Composite A with rough lamination carbon matrix (RL) shows the highest volume loss and coefficient of friction, while composite D with smooth lamination/resin carbon matrix (SL/RC) shows the lowest volume loss. The worn surface of composite A appears smooth, whereas that of composite C with smooth lamination carbon (SL) appears rough. The worn surface of composite D appears smooth under low load but rough under high load. Atomic force microscope images show that the size of wear particles on the worn surface is also dependent on the carbon matrix.

  • Optically compensated bend (OCB) mode has intrinsic characteristics such as wide viewing angle and fast response time. However, in order to operate the OCB mode in bend state, this device needs quick transitions from the initial splay state to bend state. In this paper, we proposed OCB mode with initially bend state using reactive mesogen (RM) monomer for surface polymer stabilization. The device shows continuous reorientation of the LC with applied field and a very fast response time.
