An adaptive response surface method with Latin Hypercube sampling strategy is employed to optimize a magnet pole shape of large scale BLDC motor to minimize the cogging torque. The proposed algorithm consists of the multi-objective Pareto optimization and ($1+{\lambda}$) evolution strategy to find the global optimal points with relatively fewer sampling data. In the adaptive RSM, an adaptive sampling point insertion method is developed utilizing the design sensitivities computed by using finite element method to set a reasonable response surface with a relatively small number of sampling points. The developed algorithm is applied to the shape optimization of PM poles for 6MW BLDC motor.

This paper presents an optimization of permanent magnet (PM) in a brushless dc (BLDC) motor using the response surface methodology (RSM). Size and angle of the PM are optimized to minimize the cogging torque, while reducing the magnitude of harmonic at a dominant frequency and maintaining the operating torque. A fitted RS model is constructed by verifying the high reliability of the total variation and the variation of estimated error. The optimized design is validated by carrying out the reanalysis and comparing to the initial model using the nonlinear transient finite element analysis.

A robust position control method of the BLDC motor using a new sliding mode control strategy is presented. The main property of variable structure system(VSS) is that the system response is robust and insensitive to parameter variations and external disturbances in the sliding mode. When using the conventional VSS, generally the reaching phase problem occurs, which cause the system response to be sensitive to parameter variations and external disturbances. Furthermore, the speed of response is relatively slow because the swithching surface is a linear function. In order to overcome these problems, VSS with nonlinear sliding surface eliminating reaching phase is proposed. The validity of the proposed scheme is shown by results of simulations of simulations and experiments for the BLDC motor with variable load.

This paper investigates the magnetic excitation force of a surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) motor according to the change of pole/slot combination. The characteristics of magnetic flux and radial magnetic force (RMF) due to pole/slot combination were analyzed by using magnetic circuit analysis. Also, the RMF of motors with the variable pole/slot combination was numerically simulated by using the finite element analysis to verify the result of the magnetic circuit analysis. This research shows that RMF ripple is reduced when the number of pole is smaller than the number of slot.
Through shallow trench isolation (STI) chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) tests, we investigated the dependence of pad surface temperature on the abrasive and additive concentrations in ceria slurry under varying pressure using blanket film wafers. The pad surface temperature after CMP increased with the abrasive concentration and decreased with the additive concentration in slurries for the constant down pressure. A possible mechanism is that the additive adsorbed on the film surfaces during polishing decreases the friction coefficient, hence the pad surface temperature gets lower with increasing the additive concentration. This difference in temperature was more remarkable for the higher concentration of abrasives. In addition, in-situ measurement of spindle motor was carried out during oxide and nitride polishing. The averaged motor current for oxide film was higher than that for nitride film, meaning the higher friction coefficient.

This paper deals with design and analysis of surface-mounted PM (SPM) motor for compressor of air-conditioning system for electric vehicle applications according to slot/pole combination. First, required torque-speed curve characteristics are determined from operating conditions of the compressor. Restricted conditions such as motor size limit and current density are also determined. And then, under same rated and restricted conditions, twelve models which have different slot/pole combinations each other are designed for various pole arc/pitch ratio using simple equations and 2-d finite element (FE) analyses. Designed models are analyzed and compared in terms of back-emf THD, cogging torque, torque ripple, power losses, efficiency, etc. On the basis of analysis results, it is found that the motor with a 6-pole PM rotor and a 27-slot stator has most outstanding performances in electromagnetic aspects. Finally, through the mechanical modal analysis and demagnetization analysis, it is concluded that the determined motor is most suitable for the compressor of air-conditioning system for electric vehicles.

Mobile phone is a representative personal communication tool among wireless communication devices. Recently, with the miniaturization and light-weight trend of mobile phone, the vibration motor has been replaced by coin type. The required performances of coin type vibration motor needed by user are long life, higher vibration, and thin thickness. Also the most important factor determines the performance of vibration motor is long-term reliability, which is mainly related to PCB plating technique for commutator. In this study, three types of fault were categorized to analyze the cause for malfunction of vibration motor. And, hardness and surface morphology on plating surface are also investigated to optimize the plating method and plating conditions. As a result, new plating method and conditions were proposed to increase the durability of PCB commutator.
During normal machine operation, partial discharge(PD) measurements were performed with turbine generator analyzer(TGA) in two high voltage motors. Two 6.6kV motors were installed with 80pF capacitive couplers at the terminal box. The PD patterns were displayed two dimensional and three dimensional. TGA summarizes each plot with two quantifies such as the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the peak PD magnitude(Qm). Off-line PD measurements were conducted on one 4.16kV motor. The motor was energized to 2.4kV, 3.0kV, 3.5kV and 4.16kV, respectively. The PD levels in pC were measured with a conventional digital PD detector. The comparison of positive to negative PD indicates whether the defect elements of PD are within the insulation or on the insulation surface. Discharge at conductor surface was discovered in No. 1 motor. Internal discharges were generated in phase A, B and C of No. 2 motor, Slot discharges occurred in three phases of No. 3 motor.
