This paper discusses a reverse supply chain (RSC) which consists of the process flows from procurement of used products collected from a market, through remanufacturing products from the used products, to sales of the products in a market. In general, it is conceivable for the RSC to face the uncertainty in quality of used products collected from a market. Inspection is one of efficient methods to deal with the problem regarding quality of used products. However, there is a trade-off between inspection cost and inspection accuracy. This paper focuses on the following five types of inspection: (1) 100% inspection, (2) sampling inspection, (3) sampling inspection with screening of rejected lots, (4) sampling inspection with screening of acceptable lots, and (5) no inspection, and determines the optimal operation consisting of the optimal number of procured used products and the optimal inspection policy. Numerical analysis clarifies not only how changes of conditions of the RSC affect the manufacturer's optimal operation but also features of each inspection type. In addition, from the results of numerical analysis, this paper shows the usability to add the proposed inspection in this paper, the sampling inspection with screening of acceptable lots, to choices of inspection type.
Remanufacturing is a process of recovering end-of-life products into serviceable parts for producing new products. Due to the limited supply of recovery cores to remanufacture, a remanufacturing firm also needs to produce or procure new parts for fulfilling the demand. This paper is targeted for solving the problem of determining the optimal amount of newly produced and remanufacturing parts, which is called production and remanufacturing planning (PRP) problem, under uncertain supply of recovery cores. The new production mitigates the risk of insufficient core supply while it takes more costs than the remanufacturing. The PRP model in this paper also considers disassemble-to-order (DTO) environment, in which multiple kinds of parts are remanufactured from multiple products on order of the parts. Whereas existing studies presents only heuristic solutions for DTO remanufacturing, this paper provides an exact solution for this problem and analytical sensitivity of the involved cost parameters, adopting multi-dimensional newsvendor modeling and stochastic linear programming techniques. The result shows that production and remanufacturing plans for multiple products are mutually dependent, and a change of cost parameters involved in only one part is propagated to all other parts.
We propose a new supply chain planning methodology for both a manufacturer and a distributor in order to find a global supply chain plan for functional product markets. Functional products as opposed to innovative products include the staples that people buy regularly from their nearby places to satisfy basic needs. In the functional product market, the distributor has an initiative of supply chain control and planning with a freedom to request any profit maximizing order quantities until the manufacturer refuses, whereas the manufacturer may not provide more than requested. In this paper, two independent agents on behalf of the manufacturer and the distributor are introduced, and supply chain planning can be conducted by collaboration between them. In addition, mathematical models and a numerical example are presented to show the possibility of the proposed methodology.
Supply chain is the link that moves products between suppliers, manufactures, wholesalers, distribution, retailers and ended consumers. Supply chain management(SCM) is a way to supervise the flow of products, materials and information as they move along the supply chain. In the recent years, Most of the companies are in a hurry the introduction of SCM to obtain international competitiveness. The goal of SCM is to optimize the supply chain, which can not only reduce inventories, but may also create a higher profit margin for finished goods by giving customers exactly what they want. There are four major decision areas (location, production, inventory, transportation) in supply chain management, and there are both strategic and operational elements in each of these decision areas. This paper is concerned with the integrated production planning problem including not only the production cost but also the transportation cost in supply chains, and an efficient algorithm using genetic algorithm and quickest path method is presented to solve the problem.

With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, propelled by digital technology, we are transitioning into an era of hyperconnectivity, where everything and objects are becoming interconnected. A smart supply chain refers to a supply chain system where various sensors and RFID tags are attached to objects such as machinery and products used in the manufacturing and transportation of goods. These sensors and tags collect and analyze process data related to the products, providing meaningful information for operational use and decision-making in the supply chain. Before the spread of COVID-19, the fundamental principles of supply chain management were centered around 'cost minimization' and 'high efficiency.' A smart supply chain overcomes the linear delayed action-reaction processes of traditional supply chains by adopting real-time data for better decision-making based on information, providing greater transparency, and enabling enhanced collaboration across the entire supply chain. Therefore, in this study, a hierarchical model for building a smart supply chain was constructed to systematically derive the importance of key factors that should be strategically considered in the construction of a smart supply chain, based on the major factors identified in previous research. We applied AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) techniques to identify urgent improvement areas in smart SCM initiatives. The analysis results showed that the external supply chain integration is the most urgent area to be improved in smart SCM initiatives.
Supply chains for agricultural commodities with their various constraints such as production lead time, seasonal production, and methods of storage are limited in the extent to which techniques like Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory management can be applied. It is beyond the ability of producers to control harvest time and many agricultural products are perishable so that they can incur exceptional losses in storage if they are not handled correctly. This is a source of additional costs and inefficiency in supply chain management. The purpose of this study is to reduce or eliminate such sources of loss and inefficiency and to identify success factors for the JIT inventory management system where it can be applied for agricultural products. Where JIT techniques can be applied in supply chain management for agricultural products, costs such as transportation, inventory, and storage losses can be reduced with concurrent increases in efficiency. In the paper, some of the problems associated with applying JIT inventory control methods in supply chain management for agricultural commodities will be reported through a series of case studies.

This paper considers a reverse supply chain with simultaneous recovery of used products and manufacturing of brand-new ones. Recovered products are downgraded and have to be sold in a market different from that of brand-new products at a different price. In case of a shortage of recovered product inventory, a brand-new item, if available, can be offered at the price of a recovered product. In other words, one-way demand substitution is allowed. We address the joint decision of when to manufacture brand-new product, when to recover returned product, and how to control demand substitution to maximize the hybrid production system's profits. To this end, we propose a Markov decision Process model and investigate the structure of the optimal policy. Performance comparison is numerically implemented between the models with and without downward demand substitution option under different operating conditions of the system parameters.
South Korea imports more than one hundred tons of fishery products every year from China, Japan, North Korea, etc. However, imported North Korean fishery products was only 4% of the total fishery products imported in 2007. Though South-North Trade as inter-Korean trade is exempted from tax, imports of North Korean fishery products have not been activated owing to import restrictions, insufficient quality control etc. Expanding imports of North Korean fishery products seems, however, to contribute to lessen the supply and demand unbalance in fishery products of South Korea. It will especially gratify a part of fresh and cold fishery products demand. Therefore, we need to expand the imports of North Korean fishery products by quality control improvement, reformation of origin certifying system, import liberalization etc. This study researches the demand and supply of fishery products of South and North Korea, the actual conditions of imports of North Korean fishery products, and suggests strategies to expand their imports. As the greatest reason to oppose imports of North Korean fishery products is the pricing pressure of domestically produced fishery products due to imports of North Korean fishery products, we need to research and analyze the distribution channels, retail markets, sales prices of imported North Korean fishery products to verify that imports of North Korean fishery products has not caused lower pricing of domestically produced fishery products.
The purpose of this study is to identify problems and suggest improvements of estimating procedures and item of fisheries supply-demand statistics served as a basis for the fisheries supply-demand policies. Korea Rural Economic Institute(KREI) and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries(MOF) respectively publish the fisheries supply-demand statistics. But the reliability of data is low as the statistics of these two organizations are limited and show discrepancy in the numbers. It is therefore difficult to use them as the basic data for policies. Also, an accurate data aggregation is difficult due to following problems in the items of statistics. 1) Problems in estimating route sales and non-route sales of production, 2) adequacy of fishery product yield rate compared to raw material in the fisheries import/export sector, 3) selection of target companies for understand stocks and survey scope of fish species, 4) applying'0'to non-edible product demand etc. In order to develop the fisheries industry as a future growth industry, it is necessary to establish the accurate fisheries supply-demand policy as the instability of fisheries supply and demand is increasing. To do this, statistical reliability has to be improved. The improvements proposed in this study should be implemented considering urgency. First of all, an exhaustive analysis of stock statistics and conversion rates of raw material yield in the fisheries import/export sector should be conducted. In the medium term and the long term, transferring production statistics to MOF and surveys on the use demand of non-food product and the level of reduced and discarded seafood products should be carried out in consecutive order.
