This study deals with the optimal design of a DC reactor type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL). The condition in which the cost function is minimized under given constraints is one of the things to be first considered in developing SFCLS. This condition is a group of the values corresponding to the variables the cost function depends on. In this paper, the length of tape was taken as a dependent variable, the inductance of DC reactor and the turns ratio of magnetic core reactors as independent variables. For the SFCL available at the level of 6.6kV-200A, we examined 4 cases; at the fault times of 80msec, 50msec, 30msec and 10msec. Since thyristors would be utilized instead of diodes, we chose the result at 10msec as the basic data. Considering safety factor 30%, our optimal design was decided to be the inductance 570mH, the critical current over 620A, the turns ratio 0.89 and the fault time within 20msec.
We have fabricated good quality superconducting $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta}$ thin films on Hastelloy(Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) metallic substrate with $CeO_2$ and $BaTiO_3$ buffer layers in-situ by pulsed laser deposition in a multi-target processing chamber. We have chosen $CeO_2$ as a buffer layer which has cubic structure of $5.41{\AA}$ lattice parameter and only 0.2% of lattice mismatch with YBCO. $CeO_2$ layer may be helpful for power transmission due to its conducting property. In order to enhance the crystallization of YBCO films on metallic substrates. we deposited $CeO_2$ and $BaTiO_3$ buffer layers at various temperatures. The YBCO superconducting tape fabricated with $BaTiO_3$ and $CeO_2$ buffer layers shows 85K of transition temperature and about $8.4{\times}10^4A/cm^2$ of critical current density at 77K.
A 100 〔HP〕 rated synchronous motor with superconducting rotating field winding has been designed based on the formulated equations established from 2 dimensional magnetic field distributions in a cylindrical coordinate The cross-section was drawn based on calculated design results via Fortran program and then modeled with FEM (Finite Element Method) to investigate the machine performances. First of all, the magnetic field distributions are analysed in many ways according to the field directions and the armature currents. Especially after the rotating Held winding is arranged with BSCCO-2223 high-temperature superconducting(HTS) pancake coils, the exerted magnetic field normally on the HTS tape is calculated through FEM. And the machine output power is calculated according to the torque ang1es which lie between the field and the armature main flux lines. Moreover, this Paper includes the eddy-current loss variations of a copper damper located between the field and the armature coils and design considerations of the 100 HP HTS motor utilizing ferro-magnetic material.

Adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR) for hydrogen re-liquefaction operating between 24 K and 20 K has been designed. $Dy_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}Ni_2$, whose Curie temperature is 24 K, is selected as a magnetic refrigerant. The magnetic refrigerant powder is sintered with oxygen-free high purity copper (OFHC) powder to enhance its effective thermal conductivity as well as to achieve relatively high frequency. A perforated plate heat exchanger (PPHE) operated with forced convection is utilized as a heat switch. The forced convection heat switch is expected to have fast response relative to a conventional gas-gap heat switch. A conduction-cooled high Tc superconducting (HTS) magnet is employed to apply external magnetic field variation on a magnetic refrigerant. $2^{nd}$ generation GdBCO coated conductor HTS tape with Kapton$^{(R)}$ insulation (SUNAM Inc.) will be utilized for the HTS magnet. The magnetization and demagnetization processes are to be achieved by the AC operation of the HTS magnet. The designed magnetic field and target ramp rate of the HTS magnet are over 4 T with 180 A and 0.4 T/s, respectively. AC loss distribution on HTS magnet is theoretically estimated.
REBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes with superior mechanical and electromechanical properties are preferable in applications such as superconducting coils and magnets. The CC tapes should withstand factors that can affect their performance during fabrication and operation of its applications. In coil applications, CC tapes experience different mechanical constraints such as tensile or compressive stresses. Recently, the critical current ($I_c$) degradation of CC tapes used in coil applications due to delamination were already reported. Thermal cycling, coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch among constituent layers, screening current, etc. can induce excessive transverse tensile stresses that might lead to the degradation of $I_c$ in the CC tapes. Also, CC tapes might be subjected to very high magnetic fields that induce strong Lorentz force which possibly affects its performance in coil applications. Hence, investigation on the delamination mechanism of the CC tapes is very important in coiling, cooling, operation and design of prospect applications. In this study, the electromechanical properties of REBCO CC tapes fabricated by reactive co-evaporation by deposition and reaction (RCE-DR) under transversely applied loading were investigated. Delamination strength of the CC tape was determined using the anvil test. The $I_c$ degraded earlier under transverse tensile stress as compared to that under compressive one.
A double pancake winding method is widely used to make the superconducting magnet, using high temperature superconductor (HTS) tape. In the double pancake winding method, the joints with contact resistances between double pancake coils are inevitably needed. The electrical joule heating on the contacts causes refrigerant loss during operation. And a space outside the winding, for splices and mechanical support, is more than that for its layer-wound equivalent. In this paper, a double pancake winding method in order to reduce the number of the joints was proposed. Both of the double pancake coils using the conventional winding method and the proposed winding method have been fabricated and tested to make the solution technically feasible in the double pancake winding method. Especially, critical-current tests of the fabricated double pancake coils were conducted in order to show the same performance and confirm contact resistances between double pancake coils.

Recently, many studies have been reported on the magnetoresistance and Hall effect of REBCO thin films and bulk. The voltage interferes quench detection of high-temperature superconducting magnet and generates leakage current in no insulation high-temperature superconducting coil. Therefore, in this paper, experiments on magnetoresistance and Hall effect of commercial YBCO and GdBCO tapes have been carried out. As a result, anomalous voltages expected for the magnetoresistance and Hall effect of REBCO tapes were observed and analyzed. In addition, the voltage characteristics of REBCO have been identified, and the Hall coefficient are calculated for use in high magnetic field magnet applications.
NMR over 1 GHz (23.5 T) level has difficulties in design and fabrication with only low temperature superconducting (LTS) wire because of its material characteristics such as the decay of critical current under the magnetic field. Because High temperature superconducting (HTS) tape has a good performance under the extremely high magnetic field, it has been developed for high-field magnet over 23.5 T. In this paper, the LTS magnet was made for applying magnetic fields externally and the HTS coil was designed and fabricated. The electromagnetic field analysis has been done with respect to the structure and the operating current of the LTS and HTS coil. Considering to the field homogeneity and the center field, the design parameters which is suitable for the HTS coil were found. The HTS insert coil was impregnated with epoxy resin in order to prevent the movement of winding during energizing the magnet. The hybrid magnet (LTS/HTS) magnet was fabricated and tested based on the design parameters. The experimental result shows that the LTS background magnet and the HTS insert coil can be operated stable beyond 220 A and 210 A. The final value 4.32 T at the center was acquired.
A superconducting motor consisting of high temperature superconducting (HTS) rotor and air-core stator is under development in Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. HTS motor was designed for having the rated power of 100hp at 1800 rpm. HTS field winding is composed of sixteen HTS race track shaped coils wound with stainless steel-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor by react and wind fabrication method. Nomex Paper was used for electrical insulation. Each of four magnet pole assemblies was constructed with four double pancake sub-coils, mechanically stacked and electrically in series. Four magnet assemblies were fixed on an aluminum support structure to make effective heat transfer. Critical current (Ic) of HTS field winding was 41A but minimum Ic of sub-coils was 35A at 77K and self field. Joule heat generated in HTS field winding was 2.11W at 77K and 35A.

Recently, cable conductors composed of numerous coated conductors have been developed to transport huge current for large-scale applications, for example accelerators and fusion reactors. Various cable conductors such as CORC (Conductor on round core), Roebel Cable, and TSTC (Twisted stacked tape cable) have been designed and tested to apply for large-scale applications. But, these cable conductors cannot improve the engineering critical current density (Je) because they are made by simple stacking of coated conductors. In this study, multi-HTS (High temperature superconductor) layers on one substrate (MHOS) wire was fabricated to increase the engineering critical current density by using the exfoliation of superconducting layer from substrate and silver diffusion bonding method. By the repetition of these processes, the 10 m long 6-layer MHOS conductor was successfully fabricated without any intermediate layers like buffer or solder. 6-layer MHOS conductor exhibited a high critical current of 2,460A/12mm-w. and high engineering critical current density of 1,367A/mm2 at liquid nitrogen temperature.
