Bi-2223 superconducting wires with 55 filaments were fabricated by stacking, drawing process with different heat-treatment histories. Two kinds of powders were prepared. One was pre-annealed at 760-820 $^{\circ}C$ and low oxygen partial pressure, and the other was only calcined state. Before rolling process, round wires were pre-annealed at 760 -820 $^{\circ}C$ and in a low oxygen partial pressure. We confirmed that pre-annealing step was to transform Bi-2212 orthorhombic structure from Bi-2212 tetragonal structure and to reduce the formation of second phases at superconducting wire. However Bi-2223 phases were formed at higher pre-annealing temperature. Bi-2223 conductor was needed frequently annealing at low temperature because pre-annealing at precursor powder brought about decrease in workability. We could achieve highest Je of 6500 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at the tape using Bi-2212 orthorhombic phase by introduced slightly overheating at the 1st sintering process.

We report high pressure synthesis of Sr$_{0.9}$Sm$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$. Powder x-ray diffraction showed that the synthesized compounds have infinite layer structure as a major component. Slow heating at the first stage of heating processes after pressurization resulted in several larger grains. The largest grain was found to have the longest edge length of about 100 micrometer. Through magnetic property measurement in superconducting state, we found that pinning in this compound has substantial difference from that of La doped infinite layer, which has no unpaired spin at Sr site.

Critical current$(I_c)$ degradation of High $T_c$ Superconducting(HTS) tapes and AC loss under mechanical load is one of the hottest issues in HTS development and application. Mechanical load reduces the critical current of superconducting wire, and the $I_c$ degradation affects the AC loss of the wire. We measured the $I_c$ degradation and AC loss under tension and bending of Bi-2223 tapes made by 'Powder-in-Tube' technique at 77K with self-field. Also, we have studied the frequency characteristics on self-field AC loss in multi-filamentary Bi-2223/Ag tape at 77K. The measurement results and discussions on the relationship between $I_c$ degradation and AC loss are presented.
$MgB_2$ superconductor is highly sensitive to the Mg content. Even if the samples are synthesized with the appropriate looking stoichiometric ratio, the heat treatment leads to the loss of Mg either to ambiance or to MgO. To avoid it, either excess Mg is added in the starting powder or sealed ampoule annealing is employed. In this paper the effect of open Mg sintering ambiance on the ex-situ $MgB_2$ was studied to enhance its superconducting properties. The open Mg ambiance was created to avoid any overpressure of Mg by providing a hole in Fe tube used as sample holder. The decrease in resistivity of the synthesized sample was observed through the increased temperature dependence of electron-phonon interactions. A clear enhancement in the superconducting cross-sectional area and hence the in-field critical current density is obtained.
We report refinement of crystalline boron by an attrition ball milling system and the superconducting properties of the $MgB_2$ pellets prepared from the refined boron. In this work, we have conducted the ball milling with only crystalline boron powder, in order to improve homogeneity and control the grain size of the $MgB_2$ that is formed from it. We observed that the crystalline responses in the ball-milled boron became broader and weaker when the ball-milling time was further increased. On the other hand, the $B_{2}O_{3}$ peak became stronger in the powders, resulting in an increase in the amount of MgO within the $MgB_2$ volume. The main reason for this is a greater oxygen uptake. From the perspective of the superconducting properties, however, the sample prepared from boron that was ball milled for 5 hours showed an improvement of critical current density ($J_c$), even with increased MgO phase, under an external magnetic field at 5 and 20 K.

Using Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$.$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{x}$ powders prepared by solid state reaction and spray drying method, the nucleation and growth behaviors of superconducting and second phases were investigated during isothermal heat treatment. When the spray drying power was used in contrast with solid state reaction powder, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$.$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{x}$ (2223) phase could be formed at the relatively shot time and second phases were much bigger. Quantitative analysis showed that as the heat treatment time increased, more Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$.$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{x}$ (2212) changed to 2223 and the major second phase was changed from (Sr,Ca)$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$$O_{x}$(14:24) to (Sr,Ca)$_2$Cu$_1$$O_{x}$ (2:l). The superconducting phase formed at the relatively short time 14:24 phase. Following the Bi-free phase of 14:24 Phase, but long time was needed in places far from the 14:24 phase. Following the formation of the 2212 phase near the 14:24 phase, the 2223 phase nucleated preferentially at the interface between the 2212 and 14:24 phases. The preferential nuclcation of 2223 was explained by its structural similarity and low Interfacial energy with both the Bi-free and 2212 Phases.12 Phases.
In this work, nano size $BaCeO_3$, which is a possible flux pinning medium of melt processed $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_x$ superconductor, was synthesized by the conventional solid state reaction method using powders. $BaCeO_3$ and $CeO_2$ were mixed thoroughly using a ball milling for 24 hours and calcined at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours for the formation $BaCeO_3$ powder. The obtained $BaCeO_3$ powder was attrition milled at various milling times of 60 min, 120 min and 240 min. The $BaCeO_3$ powders of various milling times were mixed with $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_x$ powder. Seed melt processed $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_x$-$BaCeO_3$ (15wt.%) superconductors were prepared and the superconducting properties were investigated. It was found that $T_c$ of $Y_{1.5}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_x$ samples was not significantly affected by $BaCeO_3$ addition, but $J_c$ of samples was increased by $BaCeO_3$ addition. The $J_c$ improvement by fine $BaCeO_3$ powder (120 min attrition-milled) was effective at low magnetic fields less than 2 T.
To obtain fine dispersion of Ag particles in $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7-y}$ (123) superconductors, 123 samples were made by pyrophoric synthetic method using malic acid and the subsequent solid- state reaction. As the pyrophoric synthetic powder was used as a precursor material, fine 123 powder of submicron size was produced in a short reaction time. The added $Ag_2$O was converted to metallic Ag during Pyrophoric reaction and it accelerated both the formation of 123 phase and the grain growth via the enhanced mass transfer. The Ag particles of the sample sintered using the pyrephoric synthetic powder were more finely dispersed in the 123 matrix, compared to those of the sample sintered using the mechanically mixed powder, attributing to the improvement of the superconducting properties.

The effects of $MgB_4$ addition on the superconducting properties and the microstructure of in situ processed $MgB_2$ bulk superconductors were studied. $MgB_4$ powder of 1-20 wt.% was mixed with (Mg + 2B) powder and then pressed into pellets. The pellets of (Mg + 2B + $xMgB_4$) were heat-treated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in flowing argon. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for the heat-treated samples showed that the major formed phase in all samples was $MgB_2$ and the minor phases were $MgB_4$ and MgO. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) values showed that the grain size of $MgB_2$ decreased as the amount of $MgB_4$ addition increased. $MgB_4$ particles included in a $MgB_2$ matrix is considered to suppress the grain growth of $MgB_2$. The onset temperatures ($T_{c,onset}$) of $MgB_2$ with $MgB_4$ addition (0-10 wt.%) was between 37-38 K. The 20 wt.% $MgB_4$ addition slightly reduced the $T_{c,onset}$ of $MgB_2$ to 36.5 K. This result indicates that $MgB_4$ addition did not influence the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of $MgB_2$ significantly. On the other hand, the small additions of 1-5 wt.% $MgB_4$ increased the critical current density ($J_c$) of $MgB_2$. The $J_c$ enhancement by $MgB_4$ addition is attributed not only to the grain size refinement but also to the possible flux pinning of $MgB_4$ particles dispersed in a $MgB_2$ matrix.

Bi-2223 superconducting wires were fabricated by stacking, drawing process with different precursor powders and different heat-treatment histories. The precursor powders were 2 kinds of Pb content. And a part of the tapes were experienced pre-annealing process which caused tetragonal structure of Bi-2212 phase to orthorhombic structure of it was during drawing process. We confirmed the transformation of Bi-2212 phase from tetragonal structure to orthorhombic structure and reduction of second phases. XRD and DC magnetization analysis were performed in order to investigate the fraction of Bi-2223 phase in Bi-2223/Ag HTS tape. We could achieve best Ic of 70 A class at the Bi-2223/Ag tape using low Pb content of precursor powder and experienced pre-annealing process. DC magnetization analysis was useful to investigate the fraction of Bi-2223 phase in the Bi-2223/Ag tape.
