  • Layer separation (delamination) is an essential threat to fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) plates under dynamic, static, and fatigue loads. Under compressive load, the growth of delamination will lead to structural instability. The aim of this paper is to present a method using shape memory alloy (SMA) stitches to suppress the delamination growth in a FRP plate and to improve the buckling behavior of the plate with a rectangular hole. The present paper is divided into two parts. Firstly, a closed-form (CF) formulation for evaluating the buckling load of the FRP plate is presented. Secondly, the finite element method (FEM) will be employed to calculate the buckling loads of the plates which serves to validate the results obtained from the closed-form method. The novelty of this work is the development of the closed-form solution using the p-Ritz energy approach regarding the stress-dependent phase transformation of SMA to trace the equilibrium path. For the FEM, the Lagoudas constitutive model of the SMA material is implemented in FORTRAN programming language using a user material subroutines (VUMAT). The model is simulated in ABAQUS/Explicit solver due to the nature of the loading type. The cohesive zone model (CZM) is applied to simulate the delamination growth.

  • Recently, the number of high-rise buildings being built in Korea by major construction companies for residential and commercial use has been increasing. When constructing a high-rise building, it is necessary to apply massive amounts of concrete to form a mat foundation that can withstand the huge load of the upper structure. However, it is of increasing concern that due to limitations in terms of the amount of placing equipment, available job-sites and systems for mass concrete placement in the construction field, it is not always possible to place a great quantity of concrete simultaneously in a large-scale mat foundation, and for this reason consistency between placement lift cannot be secured. In addition, a mat foundation Is likely to crack due to the stress caused by differences inhydration heat generation time. To derive a solution for these problems, this study provides test results of a hydration heat crack reduction method by applying placement lift change and setting time control with a super retarding agent for mass concrete in a large-scale mat foundation. Mock-up specimens with different mixtures and placement liftswere prepared at the job-site of a newly-constructed high-rise building. The test results show that slump flow of concrete before and after adding the super retarding agent somewhat Increases as the target retarding time gets longer, while the air content shows no great difference. The setting time was observed to be retarded as the target retarding time gets longer. As the target retarding time gets longer, compressive strength appears to be decreased at an early stage, but as time goes by, compressive strength gets higher, and the compressive strength at 28 days becomes equal or higher to that of plain concrete without a super retarding agent. For the effect of placement lift change and super retarding agent on the reduction of hydration heat, the application of 2 and 4 placement lifts and a super retarding agent makes it possible to secure consistency and reduce temperature difference between placement lifts, while also extending the time to reach peak temperature. This implies that the possibility of thermal crack induced by hydration heat is reduced. The best results are shown in the case of applying 4 placement lifts.

  • The finite volume method for forging simulation is examined to reveal its possibility as well as its problem in this paper. For this study, the finite volume method based MSC/SuperForge and the finite element method based AFDEX are employed. The simulated results of the homogeneous compression obtained by the two softwares are compared to indicate the problems of the finite volume method while several application examples are given to show the possibility of the finite volume method for simulation of upsetter forging processes. It is shown that the finite volume method can not predict the exact solution of the homogeneous compression especially in terms of forming load and deformed shape but that it is helpful to simulate very complex forging processes which can hardly be simulated by the conventional finite element method.

  • The cable-stayed-suspension hybrid bridge is a cooperative system developed from the traditional cable-stayed and suspension bridges, and takes some advantages of the two bridge systems. It is also becoming a competitive design alternative for some long and super long-span bridges. But due to its great flexibility, the flutter stability plays an important role in the design and construction of this bridge system. Considering the geometric nonlinearity of bridge structures and the effects of nonlinear wind-structure interaction, method and its solution procedure of three-dimensional nonlinear flutter stability analysis are firstly presented. Parametric analyses on the flutter stability of a cable-stayed-suspension hybrid bridge with main span of 1400 meters are then conducted by nonlinear flutter stability analysis, some design parameters that significantly influence the flutter stability are pointed out, and the favorable structural system of the bridge is also discussed based on the wind stability.

  • Recently with growth in the capability of super computers and Parallel computers, shape design optimization is becoming easible for real problems. Also, Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) techniques have been improved for higher reliability and higher accuracy. In the shape design optimization, analysis solvers and optimization schemes are essential. In this work, the Roe's 2nd-order Upwind TVD scheme and DADI time march with multigrid were used for the flow solution with the Euler equation and FDM(Finite Differenciation Method), GA(Genetic Algorithm) and Kriging were used for the design optimization. Kriging were applied to 2-D airfoil design optimization and compared with FDM and GA's results. When Kriging is applied to the nonlinear problems, satisfactory results were obtained. From the result design optimization by Kriging method appeared as good as other methods.

  • Sensitivity to 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) tasting predicts sensitivity to food qualities as well as rejection of some strong tasting foods. Using consumer rejection threshold (CRT) method, this study aimed to assess whether systematic changes in the taste intensities of familiar foods would lead to earlier rejection of these products by PROP tasters than by PROP non-tasters. Subjects rated the intensity of PROP solution and were divided into tasters (Ts) and non-tasters (NTs). And Ts were further divided into medium-tasters (MTs) and super-tasters (STs). Difference thresholds and CRTs were then evaluated for caffeine in coffee, citric acid in orange juice, and for NaCl in beef soup. For each food, Ts were more sensitive to variations in tastants than NTs. Ts also rejected more bitter coffee, more sour orange juice, and less salty beef soup more readily than did NTs. Comparisons among NTs, MTs, and STs gave fewer clear differences.

  • We sought to study the qualities and scientific benefits of Dongchimi, a traditional Korean food. We compared and analyzed ingredients used for the appearance and storability of dongchimi - honggot (Brassica juncea czerniak et coss), cockscomb (Celosia cristata L.), and beet Beta vulgaris L.). We specifically examined the antioxidative and antibacterial activity of pigments from extracts of these ingredients. Distilled water ($H_2O$) and 1% citric acid were used to safely extract pigments. The antioxidative activity of the pigments was then measured for total phenolic compounds, SOD (Super Oxide Dismutase), and EDA (Electron Donation Ability) by DPPH. The antibacterial activity of was also assessed by a Paper disc solution. Our results show that the pigments had sufficient antioxidative activity and had antibacterial properties against Gram positive and negative bacteria. In particular, Cockscomb (used for enhancing color) contained the highest amount of polyphenol compounds and had the most efficient antioxidative activity.

  • Internal heat generation is one of the insidious conditions affecting the quality of an industrial product after it is cast, coated, molded, forged or laminated. Frequently, the product is pressed into service before the exothermic chemical reactions in the generic material has been completed. The heat liberated from this continuing chemical reaction or the residual deformation from the rheological activities in the materials must be adequately removed or prevented, or the product may be discolored, warped, weakened or even "ignited" spontaneously. Numerous instances of premature structural failures, product-recalls, and/or system-malfunctions have been recorded in recent history. The Coulee Dam was poured with pre-chilled concrete just to negate this freakish encore. It is well-known that concrete (a non-isotropic conducting medium), for instance, takes 28 days to develop its full strength. During this period of curing it is conceivable that the processes of internal heat generation, heat conduction and heat dissipation take place simultaneously inside the medium.he medium.

  • Electrical system is changing to smart grid which includes the distributed generations with reusable energy sources in these days. The distributed generations are environmentally friendly and have no concern with depletion problem. But dispatching distributed generations can cause an increase of the fault current. Resistive type super conducting fault current limiter is one of the candidates of solution for the large fault problem in smart grid. In this paper, a design method for the wire length of fault current limiter and the result of short circuit test for small scale modules considering system resistance are introduced.

  • The first thing in developing injection molding and extrusion with microcellular foaming process is to get a grip on one phase state's rheology of gas and polymer solution. Understanding rheology is essential to design mold or die. and it is so important to control the condition of process. Also, this data is got the utmost out of simulation carrying out. In this paper, we will see the measurement of rheology in one phase that mixed polypropylene which contains talc with carbon dioxide of super critical fluid state, and will compare its result with the simulation result.
