  • We consider an adaptive bit-loading technique for bit interleaved coded modulation-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(BICM-OFDM) systems. By adjusting transmission parameter of each subcarrier adaptively depending on the subchannel state, the performance of OFDM system can be improved dramatically. In this paper, the number of bits for each subcarrier is allocated to minimize bit error rate keeping the constant throughput for the adaptive transmission technique of BICM-OFDM system which can be applied to real time transmission. Also, We use the discrete Lagrange multiplier method to get the optimum solution under the integer bit allocation constraint. Simulation results show that computational amount of the proposed bit allocation technique is not high and BICM-OfDM system using the proposed technique can get the SNR gain by 2$\~$3 dB over nonadaptive one.

  • In wireless networks, it is important to guarantee the energy efficiency and receiver fairness for satisfying service provider and customer at the same time. In this paper, we propose a resource allocation algorithm which improves energy efficiency as well as receiver fairness based on optimization techniques. In the proposed algorithm, subchannel and power are allocated to receivers iteratively in the consideration of channel state information, amount of dissipated power, and receiver rate, in order to improve energy efficiency and receiver fairness. Through simulation, we show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of energy efficiency and receiver fairness.

  • The existing experimental data related to the turbulent mixing factor in rod arrays is examined and a new definition of the turbulent mixing factor is introduced to take into account the turbulent mixing of fluids with various Prandtl numbers. The new definition of the mixing factor is based on the eddy diffusivity of energy. With this definition of the mixing factor, it was found that the geometrical parameter, ${\delta}_{ij}/D_h$ correlates the turbulent mixing data better than Sid, which has been used frequently in existing correlations. Based on the experimental data for a highly turbulent condition in square rod arrays, a correlation describing turbulent mixing dependent on the parameter ${\delta}_{ij}/D_h$ has been developed. The correlation is insensitive to the Re number and it takes into account the effect of the turbulent Prandtl number. The proposed correlation predicts a reasonable mixing even at a lower S/d ratio.

  • In this paper, a new implementation method of OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) system with an orthogonal basis matrix is developed mathematically. The basis matrix is based on the Haar basis but has an appropriate form for modulation of multiple subchannel signals of OFDM. It is verified that the new basis matrix can be expanded with a simple recursive algorithm. The order of synthesis matrix in the transmitter is increased by the factor of two with every expansion. Demodulation in the receiver is carried out by its inverse matrix, which can be generated recursively with the orthogonal basis matrix. It is shown that perfect reconstruction of original signals is possibly achieved in the proposed OFDMsystem.

  • The next-generation mobile communication system are required to provide high-data-rate and high quality transmission over hostile radio channels. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM) technique regarded as a most promising solution in mobile environment. This paper considers the issue of efficient subcarrier allocation for OFDM system in multi-service application. Proposed algorithm can consider channel gain of each service and divide subchannel. Proposed method considers priority of service and divide more subchannels in high priority service. When proposed algorithm compares with existent algorithm, the convergence rate improves and the calculation amount is decreased.

  • The Multichannel Analyzer for Transient and steady-state in Rod Array - Liquid Metal Reactor for Flow Blockage analysis (MATRA-LMR-FB) code for the analysis of a subchannel blockage has been developed and evaluated through several experiments. The current version of the code is improved here by the implementation of a distributed resistance model which accurately considers the effect of flow resistance on wire spacers, by the addition of a turbulent mixing model, and by the application of a hybrid scheme for low flow regions. Validation calculations for the MATRA-LMR-FB code were performed for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) 19-pin tests with wire spacers and Karlsruhe 169-pin tests with grid spacers. The analysis of the ORNL 19-pin tests conducted using the code reveals that the code has sufficient predictive accuracy, within a range of 5 $^{\circ}C$, for the experimental data with a blockage. As for the results of the analyses, the standard deviation for the Karlsruhe 169-pin tests, 0.316, was larger than the standard deviation for the ORNL 19-pin tests, 0.047.

  • This paper is concerned with the problem of joint resource allocation and user-pairing in virtual MIMO SC-FDMA systems to improve service quality of experience (QoE). No-reference logarithmic model is introduced to quantify service experience for each user and the objective is to maximize sum of all user's mean of score (MOS). We firstly formulate the optimal problem into an S-dimensional (S-D) assignment problem. Then, to solve this problem, the modified Lagrangian relaxation algorithm is deduced to obtain the suboptimal result of joint user-paring and subchannel allocation. The merits of this solution are as follows. First, the gap between its results and the global optimal one can be quantified and controlled by balancing the complexity and accuracy, which merit the other suboptimal algorithms do not have. Secondly, it has the polynomial computational complexity and the worst case complexity is O(3LN3), where L is the maximum iteration time and N is the number of subchannels. Simulations also prove that our proposed algorithm can effectively improve quality of experience and the gap between our proposed and the optimal algorithms can be controlled below 8%.

  • When a nuclear reactor with rectangular fuel assemblies runs for a long time, impurities and debris may be taken into coolant channels, which may cause flow blockage, and the blocked fuel assemblies might be destroyed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to perform a thermal-hydraulic analysis of a rectangular fuel assembly by STAR-CCM+, under the condition of one subchannel with 80% blockage ratio. A rectangular fuel assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 10 MW material test reactor (MTR) is chosen. In view of the gasket material taken into the coolant channel is close to the single side of the coolant channel, in the flow blockage accident of the Oak Ridge Research Reactor (ORRR), a new blockage category called single side blockage is attempted. The blockage positions include inlet, middle and outlet, and the blockage is set as a cuboid. It is found by simulations that the blockage redistributes the mass flow rate, and large vortices appear locally. The peak temperature of the cladding is maximum, when the blockage is located at the single side of the coolant channel inlet, and no boiling occurs in all blockage cases. Moreover, as the height of the blockage increases, the damage caused by the blockage increases slightly.

  • A heterogeneous cellular network (HCN) is useful to increase the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless networks and to reduce the traffic load from the macro cell. The performance of the secondary user equipment (SUE) is affected by interference from the eNodeB (eNB) in a macro cell. To decrease the interference between the macro cell and the small cell, allocating resources properly is essential to an HCN. This study considers the scenario of a software-defined heterogeneous cellular network and performs the resource allocation process. First, we show the system model of HCN and formulate the optimization problem. The optimization problem is a complex process including power and frequency resource allocation, which imposes an extremely high complexity to the HCN. Therefore, a hierarchical resource allocation scheme is proposed, which including subchannel selection and a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based power allocation algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed hierarchical scheme is effective in improving the system capacity and energy efficiency.

  • The subchannel of a research reactor used to generate high power density is designed to be narrow and rectangular and comprises plate-type fuels operating under downward flow conditions. Critical heat flux (CHF) is a crucial parameter for estimating the safety of a nuclear fuel; hence, this parameter should be accurately predicted. Here, machine learning is applied for the prediction of CHF in a narrow rectangular channel. Although machine learning can effectively analyze large amounts of complex data, its application to CHF, particularly for narrow rectangular channels, remains challenging because of the limited flow conditions available in existing experimental databases. To resolve this problem, we used four CHF correlations to generate pseudo-data for training an artificial neural network. We also propose a network architecture that includes pre-training and prediction stages to predict and analyze the CHF. The trained neural network predicted the CHF with an average error of 3.65% and a root-mean-square error of 17.17% for the test pseudo-data; the respective errors of 0.9% and 26.4% for the experimental data were not considered during training. Finally, machine learning was applied to quantitatively investigate the parametric effect on the CHF in narrow rectangular channels under downward flow conditions.
