  • Nursing students have identified the clinical experience as one of the hardest and most anxiety producing components of their nursing program. Nurse educators play a critical role in assisting students to apply their knowledge skillfully in the clinical area. In order to help students through their clinical experience, faculty must first understand more fully the meaning of this experience for nursing students. A phenomenological study was conducted to explore the actual reality of the nursing students' clinical experience. The research was done through indepth interviews. Fifteen Pusan senior nursing students who had completed their clinical practice described their experiences. The data were collected during the period from October 1994 to January 1995. The data were analyzed by Colaizzi's method of phenomenological analysis. Six theme clusters emerged : the experience of emotional difficulties ; the experince of physical diffuculties ; the perception of deficiencies of knowledge and skill ; the disappointments and regrets perceived during the experience ; the awareness of various sources of joy and gratitude ; the experience of personal growth. The results of this study enable us to understand nursing students better. Also through these results, we should be better placed to help nursing students during their clinical experience and to help their gain more from this experience.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of life and depression in nursing students between Korean and Cambodians. Methods: The subjects of this study were 223 students taking up a four-year nursing course in colleges located in Area A in Korea and Area B in Cambodia. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0. Results: The total score on quality of life among the Korean students was significantly higher than that of the Cambodian students (t=-4.596, p<.001), while the total score on depression was lower in the Korean students compared to that of the Cambodian students. There was a statistically significant difference in the scores (t=5.179, p<001). When the levels of depression were compared, the difference between the two groups was statistically significant - the Korean students had 92.7% normal and 7.3% mild depression, while the Cambodian students had 80.9% normal and 19.1% mild depression (x2=6.781, p=.009). As a result of analyzing the correlation between the total scores on depression and quality of life, a statistically significant correlation was found in both Korean (r=-.721, p<.001) and Cambodian (r=-.508, p<.001) students. Conclusion: Therefore, a nursing intervention that considers the cultural differences should be developed in order to improve emotional response and quality of life of cambodian students.

  • Background: Nursing college students are exposed to information about diseases or drugs, and are likely to have a distorted perception of drug knowledge or behavior. The study aimed to identify knowledge and attitude about drugs and current status of self-medication among nursing students. Methods: The subjects were 172 nursing students from a university in Busan. Data were collected with structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, and one-way ANOVA using SPSS 23.0. Results: Nursing students had a high level of knowledge about drugs, but attitudes toward drugs were relatively low. 83.7% of patients had experience of self-medication. The methods to acquire information for self-administration were 29.9% by smart phone and 27.1% by internet. The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) among self-medication drugs was the highest. The most common reason for self-medication was 'I thought it to be a mild disease', and the pharmacists were the most affected by choice of self-medication. The knowledge about drugs was statistically significant according to grade, school life satisfaction and subjective health status. The attitudes about medication were statistically significant according to grade and self-medication experience. Conclusion: Nursing college students need drug safety education to improve awareness and practice of correct drug use.

  • Purpose: The aim of this descriptive study was to identify the factors influencing depression risk among South Korean nursing students. Methods: The data were collected from nursing students attending two universities through web-based questionnaires that surveyed them about depression, academic stress, social network service (SNS) addiction tendency, and upward social comparison from August 22 to September 4, 2021. The collected data from 196 nursing students were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression. Results: The mean score of depression (using CES-D Korean version) among nursing students was 13.91, which denotes probable depression. Concerning the variance with regard to depression among nursing students, 20.2% was explained by clinical practice period, academic stress, and upward social comparison. Conclusion: Programs to relieve academic stress and depression should be developed in a simple way and systematically provided at the organizational level so that nursing students secure sufficient support during the initial and continuing period of clinical practicums. Concomitantly, an attempt to reduce the upward social comparison should be highly considered.
