  • It is a truism that mathematics is about relations (cf. [Halford, G. S. (1999). The properties of representations used in higher cognitive processes: Developmental implications. In: Sigel, I. E. (Ed.), The Development of Mental Representation: Theories and Applications (pp. 147-168). Mahwah, New Jersey: Erlbaum]). In this article we are considering few problems related to the Viviani's and Routh's Theorems. All Problems are connected by the relation which exists between the distances of the point inside the triangle to it sides. We show how reasoning about the relations could lead the student's problem solving process and give easy to understand solutions of the problems. Among the problems being considered are the proof of the Converse to Viviani's Theorem, the formulas for areas of all figures formed by the sides of triangle and its cevians.

  • Sea-ports in Northern Vietnam have experienced a rapid growth of container throughput volume in recent years. To accompany with such development, huge investments also have been performed to enhance local ports capacity. It becomes a crucial task for the port authorities or the port stevedoring industry to improve the ports efficiency in order to customize national resources. In this paper, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is employed to evaluate the relative efficiency of container terminals in Northern Vietnam by collecting data from terminals since 2005 up to now. The development progress of the given terminals will be presented before providing a relative comparison among those year by year. The DEA result is then analyzed and suggestions with regard to changes in local economic environment in near future are contributed.

  • Student members from The University of Tokushima worked voluntarily at the science school for elementary school children and high school students under the support of Japan Science and Technology Agency. The teaching classes for the science school were held in 2010 as follows: (1) Science handicraft class for children on "Wonder in light, sound, temperature and force", (2) Family Science School for children and parents on "Measurement of length, temperature, weight and energy", (3) "Tatara steel making" for high school students, (4) "Wave motion in strings" for high school students. This paper describes how the students prepared the teaching materials and what they obtained from the teaching activities.

Results of a factor analysis yielded three dimensions of self-esteem which were talent/attitude and capacity/pride. And results of factor analysis also yielded three dimensions of social supports which were family, friends, and professor supports. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that capacity/pride and all of social support factors affected significantly for adjustment to college life. And female and attitude for students' major had a positive affect on adjustment to college life. • The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean primary school English teachers' beliefs on self-directed teaching and learning for facilitating student's self-directed learning. A survey was conducted, using 315 primary school teachers as participants. According to different school areas, sex, English teaching careers, and types of English teaching like classroom teachers or English specialist teachers, beliefs on teachers' self-directed teaching were studied based on class planning, class process, utilization of human resources, development and utilization of teaching materials and class evaluation. The results of this study are as follows: first, differences were not shown except class planning according to teachers from different school areas. Second, sex and beliefs of teachers' self-directed teaching had nothing in common. Third, differences were shown in class planning and class process, according to English teaching careers. Finally, according to types of English teaching, differences were shown in class process and development and utilization of teaching materials. The study suggests that it is necessary to conduct other studies for observing primary English classrooms focusing on teacher's self-directed decision-making.

  • Accompanied with ongoing calls for reform in statistics curriculum, mathematics and statistics teachers purposefully have been reconsidering the curriculum and the content taught in statistics classes. Changes made are centered around statistical inference since teachers recognize that students struggle with understanding the ideas and concepts used in statistical reasoning. Despite the efforts to change the curriculum, studies are sparse on the topic of characterizing student learning and understanding of statistical inference. Moreover, there are no tools to evaluate students' statistical reasoning in a coherent way. In response to the need for a research instrument, in a series of research study, the researcher developed a reliable and valid measure to assess students' inferential reasoning in statistics (IRS). This paper describes processes of test blueprint development that has been conducted from review of the literature and expert reviews.

  • Asian mathematics curricula and textbooks are being recognized in the United States as at least partial explanation for the higher mathematics achievement of students in Asian countries compared to students in the United States. As a result there is considerable interest among many educators in the United States in curricula from Singapore and curricula from Japan. In addition, researchers and educators at one university in the American heartland have been using the English translations of a Korean primary mathematics curriculum for professional development and assessment with groups of Missouri teachers for the purpose of enhancing teachers' understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics, and in hopes of raising student achievement scores. A professional development initiative begun seven years ago and revived this year will entail a rigorous assessment which will be reported in 2009. Results of assessment of the earlier initiatives are reported here.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze water words written by college students in order to investigate their cognition by using 'contents of water education for sustainable development'. For this study, researchers applied qualitative analysis methods such as a mind map and a water word association test, as well as quantitative analysis methods including a water common sense quiz and a survey of water cognition. The results of this study were as follows; First, college students were rarely interested in water, since the score of a water common sense quiz was quite low; water cognition that college students felt in their daily life was also deficient. Second, college student data shows that while they had specific water cognition, they did not have integrated view of water. Therefore, the study on water cognition of balanced views related to water should be carried out through developing and appling a interdisciplinary subject.
