  • While structured packing modules are known to be efficient for surface wetting and gas-liquid exchange in abiotic surface catalysis, this model study explores structured packing as a growth surface for catalytic biofilms. Microbial biofilms have been proposed as selfimmobilized and self-regenerating catalysts for the production of chemicals. A concern is that the complex and dynamic nature of biofilms may cause fluctuations in their catalytic performance over time or may affect process reproducibility. An aerated continuous trickle-bed biofilm reactor system was designed with a 3 L structured packing, liquid recycling and pH control. Pseudomonas diminuta established a biofilm on the stainless steel structured packing with a specific surface area of 500 $m^2m^{-3}$ and catalyzed the oxidation of ethylene glycol to glycolic acid for over two months of continuous operation. A steady-state productivity of up to 1.6 $gl^{-1}h^{-1}$ was achieved at a dilution rate of 0.33 $h^{-1}$. Process reproducibility between three independent runs was excellent, despite process interruptions and activity variations in cultures grown from biofilm effluent cells. The results demonstrate the robustness of a catalytic biofilm on structured packing, despite its dynamic nature. Implementation is recommended for whole-cell processes that require efficient gas-liquid exchange, catalyst retention for continuous operation, or improved catalyst stability.

  • As a result of study on factor affecting absorption efficiency using the structured packing, Mellapak N. 250Y for the chemical absorption of $CO_2$ that cause global warming due to development of industry, it is shown that Mellapak N. 250Y has lower pressure drop and superior efficiency of mass transfer than 25mm Pall ring. Also, in the absorption process, it produces high efficiency in the increase of load and concentration of absorption liquid and produces low efficiency in the increase of temperature. In the effect of overall mass transfer coefficient for 15% MEA on the temperature variation of absorbent, when absorbent temperature for 15% MEA varied as 25, 50, $80^{\circ}C$, overall mass transfer coefficients were shown as 0.83, 1.00, $0.90kmol/m^3-h-kPa$.

  • In this study a packed tower was selected for the treatment apparatus of $NH_3$ gas produced in industry. Formerly latticework packing has been used in preventive facility of treatment of $NH_3$ gas. However recently metallic Ralu-Pack 250YC. structured packing is usually being used in petrochemical production plant. This study is for the application the packing to the $NH_3$ gas treatment in wet scrubbing process. In Air/water system hydraulic pressure drop dependent of specific liquid load and gas capacity factor was continuous and parallel from graph. The tower height can be determuined by the number of transfer unit and the height of transfer unit influenced on liquid distribution.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method to infiltrate $Fe_3O_4$-nanoparticles into a porous silicon film and a monitoring technique to detect packing density of nanoparticles within the film. Recently, research to use porous silicon as a drug carrier or a new functional sensor material by infiltrating $Fe_3O_4$-nanoparticles has been extensively performed. However, it is still necessary to enhance the packing density and to develop a monitoring technique to detect the packing density in real time. In this light, we forcibly injected a nanoparticle solution into a rugate-structured free-standing porous silicon (FPS) film by applying a pressure difference between the two sides of the film. We found that the packing density by the pressure-infiltration method proposed in this paper is enhanced, relative to that by the previous diffusion method. Moreover, a continuous shift in wavelength of the rugate reflectance peak measured from the film surface was observed while the nanoparticle solution was being injected. By exploiting this phenomenon, we could qualitatively monitor the packing density of $Fe_3O_4$-nanoparticles within the FPS film with the injection volume of the nanoparticle solution.

  • A lab scale distillation experiment is conducted with small size packing used in lab scale multi-tray distillation equipment for the performance evaluation of distillation system. A sufficient surface are yielded with 6.7 mm cylindrical packings made of stainless steel, and a good liquid holdup and residence time are resulted. The comparison between the theoretical tray from the HYSYS and the experimental distillation outcome indicates that a 7 cm HETP from 27 cm packing height and a 8 cm HETP from 45 cm packing height are obtained. Comparing with the 8 cm HETP of commercial structured packing shows a similar experimental results obtained here. The 7 cm HETP is available with a complete insulation, and the importance of the insulation is proved. The results of this study indicates that a practical distillation column used in field can be tested in lab.

  • Diversification of project delivery methods (PDM) under ever-changing construction business environment has significantly changed the role of project participants. Active efforts to effectively sharing the roles and responsibilities have been observed in the project management offices (PMOs) among owner/operator organizations as well as engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance (EPCM) firms. In order for being effective in a holistic way throughout the project life-cycle, a PMO needs to have 'adequate management skills' as well as 'essential technical capabilities' in cooperating with many different participants. One of the well-known examples of the PMO's tool to support these skills and capabilities is the effective 'work packaging (WP)' that serves as a common basis integrating all relevant information in a structured manner. In an attempt to enhance the construction productivity, the concept of 'advanced work packing (AWP)' has been introduced by Construction Industry Institute (CII). The AWP enables productivity to be improved by early planning of construction packages in the design phase "with the end in mind". The purpose of this study is to identify and evaluate the 'variables' of advanced work packing (AWP) for life-cycle information integration. Firstly, an extended concept of advanced WP based on the CII AWP was defined in order to comprehend many different issues of business functions (e.g. cost, schedule, quality, etc.). A structured list of major components and variables of AWP were then identified and examined for practical viability with real-world examples. Strategic fits and managerial effectiveness were stressed throughout the analyses. Findings, implications and lessons learned are briefly discussed as well.

  • Asymmetric n-MOSFET's for improving packing density have been fabricated with 0.35 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS process. Electrical characteristics of asymmetric n-MOSFET show a lower saturation drain current and a higher linear resistance compared to those of symmetric devices. Substrate current of asymmetric MOSFET is lower than that of symmetric devices. Asymmetric n-MOSFET's have been modeled using a parasitic resistance associated with abnormally structured drain or source and a conventional n-MOSFET model. MEDICI simulation has been done for accuracy of this modeling. Simulated values of reverse as we11 as forward saturation drain current show good agreement with measured values for asymmetric device.

  • This paper investigated and validated the mechanisms and principles for constructing reticular structure of plant fiber through frothing solution approach. After process, plant fibers became low-density reticular-structured block with all properties meeting Chinese standards for cushion packing materials. The bonds between fibers acted as knots in a truss and were strong enough to keep space occupied by bubbles in the frothing solution from shrinking in the subsequent draining process. The formation of the reticular structure depends mainly on the pressure difference between inside and outside bubble, the effect of surface adsorbent force on bubble film, and hydrogen bond among fiber hydroxide.

  • The optical property, the environmental stability and the crystallization of ZnS thin films prepared by ion-assisted deposition (IAD) were investigated and compared with those of conventional electron-beam deposited thin films. The humidity(R.H. 85%) test and the thermal(15$0^{\circ}C$) show that the IAD films have relatively higher refractive index, smaller extinction coefficient and environmentally more stable than the conventional films. It is believed to originate from the reduced adsorption of moisture which reflect the increased packing density and the improved microstructure by ion bombardment. XRD experiments also confirm that conventionally grown films have an amorphous in comparison with the crystalline structured IAD films.
