  • To evaluate LBM we performed the simulation of the unsteady two dimensional flow over a square cylinder in a channel in moderate Reynolds number range, $100\~500$ by using LBM and Fractional-Step method. Frist of all we compared LBM solution of Poiseuille flow applied Farout and periodic boundary conditions with the analytical solution to verify the applicability of the boundary conditions. For LBM simulation the calculation domain was formed by structured 500x100 grids. Prescribed maximum velocity and density inlet and Farout boundary conditions were imposed on the in-out boundaries. Bounceback boundary condition was applied to the channel and the cylinder waifs. The flow patterns and vortex shedding strouhal numbers were compared with previous research results. The flow patterns by LBM were in agreement with the flow pattern by fractional step method. Furthermore the strouhal number computed by LBM simulation result was more accurate than that of fractional step method through the comparison of the previous research results.

  • We performed the simulation of the unsteady three dimensional flow over a square cylinder in a wind tunnel in moderate Reynolds number range, $100{\sim}2500$ by using LBM. SGS model was applied for the turbulent flow. Frist of all we compared LBM(Lattice Boltzmann Method) solution of Poiseuille flow applied Farout and bounce back boundary conditions with the analytical and FOAM solutions to verify the applicability of the boundary conditions. For LBM simulation the calculation domain was formed by structured grids and prescribed uniform velocity and density inlet and Farout boundary conditions were imposed on the in-out boundaries. Bounceback and wind tunnel boundary conditions were applied to the cylinder walls and the boundaries of calculation domain respectively. The maximum Strouhal number of the vortex shedding is 0.2025 at Re = 750. and the number maintains the constant value of 0.18 when Re>1000. We also predicted that the critical reynolds number of the turbulent flow is in the range of $250{\sim}500$.

  • Turbulent flow analysis around a wind turbine blade was performed to evaluate the power performance of offshore wind turbine. Fluent package was utilized to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in non-inertial rotating coordinates. The realizable k-$\varepsilon$ model was used for turbulence closure and the grid system combining structured and unstructured grids was generated. In the first, lift and drag forces of 2-D foil section were calculated and compared with existing experimental data for the validation. Then torque and thrust of the wind turbine blade having NACA 4-series sections were calculated with fixed pitch angle and rpm. Tip speed ratio was varied by changing wind speed. In the next, three kinds of end plate were attached at the tip of blade in order to increase the power of the wind turbine. Among them the end plate attached at the suction side of the blade was found to be most effective. Furthermore, performance analysis with tilt angle and rake was also performed.

  • In this paper a hybrid grid generation program for general 2-D region is introduced. The program is developed by using JAVA programming language, and it can be used either as an application program on a local computer or as an applet in the network environment. The hybrid grid system for a 2-D problem means a combination of triangular cells and quadrilateral cells, and it can offer both of the high flexibility of triangular cells and the high accuracy and efficiency of structured-type quadrilateral cells. To accommodate a quadrilateral-cell region and a triangular-cell region into one computational domain, it is importance to take good care of the interface between two different regions so that overall good grid quality can be maintained. In this research advancing layer method(ALM) augmented by elliptic smoothing method is used for the quadrilateral-cell region and advancing front method(AFM) is used for the triangular-cell region. A special treatment technique for the interface between those two regions is also developed. The interface treatment technique is basically to prevent the propagation of small cell size due to ALM method into the triangular region and maintain the smooth transition of cell-size scale between two different regions. By applying current technique high-quality hybrid grids for general 2-D regions can be easily generated, and typical grid generation results and flow solutions are demonstrated.

  • A numerical analysis is performed to investigate the effect of a supply channel and jet hole arrangement on the heat flow characteristics of impingement jet. The jet holes in a supply channel are composed of a single or staggered array from the center of a leading edge channel. The software ICEMCFD is used to generate the structured grids for calculation domain and a CFD code CFX 15.0 to perform the simulation. The present solutions are validated by comparison with the experimental and numerical ones of others. A comparison of mass flow rates of impingement jets and Nusselt numbers on the impingement surface for the single or staggered arrays is made.

  • In this study, transient 3D numerical simulations were performed to analyze the characteristics of fire driven flow for smoke ventilation system operating conditions in the deeply underground subway station. The smoke flow patterns were compared and discussed under smoke fan operating mode and off mode in the platform. Soongsil Univ. station(line number 7)was chosen for simulation which was the one of the deepest underground subway stations in the each lines of Seoul. • The use of anti-scatter grids in radiographic imaging has the advantage of preventing the image distortion caused by scattered radiation. However, it carries the side effect of leaving artifacts in the X-ray image. In this paper, we propose a grid line suppression technique using discrete cosine transform(DCT). In X-ray images, the grid lines have different characteristics depending on the shape of the object and the area of the image. To solve this problem, we adopt the DCT transform based on a dynamic segmentation, and propose a filter transfer function for each individual segment. An algorithm for detecting the band of grid lines in frequency domain and a band stop filter(BSF) with a filter transfer function of a combination of Kaiser window and Butterworth filter have been proposed. To solve the blocking effects, we present a method to determine the pixel values using multiple structured images. The validity of the proposed theory has been evaluated from the experimental results using 140 X-ray images.
