Photosensitivity of silver halide emulsion depends on the properties of the microcrystals. Size, shape, grain distribution and chemical composition as well as the inner structure or the topography of the latent image specks affect on the optical properties and play an important role in the photographic process. In the present paper, a study on the sensitization of emulsion containing AgBrClI core/shell grains showed that for the given size, shape, halide content and crystal habit, under the optimal conditions the photosensitivity of the heterojunction type grains are different from that of the common regular grains. The optimal photosensitivity was obtained at the iodide content of 2.0 mo1%.
The equilibrium or growth shape of ceramic materials is classified largely into two categories according to the thermodynamic conditions imposed. One is a polyhedral shape where the surface free energy is anisotropic, and the other a spherical shape where the surface free energy is isotropic. In the case of grains with a polyhedral shape of anisotropic surface free energy, socalled abnormal grain growth usually takes place due to a significant energy barrier for a growth unit to be attached to the crystal surface. In the case of grains with a spherical shape of isotropic surface free energy, however, normal grain growth with a uniform size distribution takes place. In this contribution, the state-of-the-art of our current understanding of the relationship between the crystal shape and the microstructure evolution during the sintering of ceramic materials in the presence of a liquid phase was discussed.

Vanadium oxide thin films were deposited on $c-Al_2O_3$ (001) substrate by in-situ RF magnetron sputtering. Oxygen partial pressure was adjusted to prepare thermochromic $VO_2$ phase. X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy convincingly showed that plate-like $V_2O_5$ grains were changed into round-shape $VO_2$ grains as oxygen partial pressure decreased. After the optimized deposition conditions were fixed, the effect of substrate temperature and orientation on the optical properties of $VO_2$ thin films was analyzed.

The structure zone model has been used to provide an overview of the relationship between the microstructure of the films deposited by PVD and the most prominent deposition condition.s. B.AMovchan and AV.Demchishin have proposed it firstls such model. They concluded that the general features of the resulting structures could be correlated into three zones depending on $T/T_m$. Here T m is the melting point of the coating material and T is the substrate temperature in kelvines. Zone 1 ($T/Tm_) is dominated by tapered macrograins with domed tops, zone 2 ($O.3) by columnar grains with denser boundaries and zone 3 ($T/T_m>O.5$) by equiaxed grains formed by recrystallization. J.AThomton has extended this model to include the effect of the sputtering gas pressure and found a fourth zone termed zone T(transition zone) consisting of a dense array of poorly defined fibrous grains. R.Messier found that the zone I-T boundary (fourth zone of Thorton) varies in a fashion similar to the film bias potential as a function of gas pressure. However, there has not nearly enough model for explaining the change in morphology with crystal orientation of the films. The structure zone model only provide an information about the morphology of the deposited film. In general, the nucleation and growth mechanism for granular and fine structure of the deposited films are very complex in an PVD technique because the morphology and orientation depend not only on the substrate temperature but also on the energy of deposition of the atoms or ions, the kinetic mechanism between metal atoms and argon or nitrogen gas, and even on the presence of impurities. In order to clarify these relationship, AI and Mg thin films were prepared on SPCC steel substrates by PVD techniques. The influence of gas pressures and bias voltages on their crystal orientation and morphology of the prepared films were investigated by SEM and XRD, respectively. And the effect of crystal orientation and morphology of the prepared films on corrosion resistance was estimated by measuring polarization curves in 3% NaCI solution.
The effect of carbon content on the shape of WC grains dispersed in the Co-rich matrix during liquid phase sintering of WC-35%Co hard metals has been determined. The shape of WC grains was observed using SEM stereography after removing cobalt matrix with boiling hydrochloric acid solution. The WC grains changed from hexagonal to trigonal prism as the carbon content increased in the two-phase region of(WC + $\beta$ - Co), while the morphology of WC grains changed from trigonal to hexagonal shape as the carbon content decreased. The morphology of WC grains changes reversibly along with carbon loss or carbon pick-up. Morphology change of WC grains is attributed to crystal structure of WC, which has an asymmetric array of carbon atoms. There are two types of prismatic planes having different numbers of broken W-C bonds in WC grains. It is scrutinized that as the carbon content increases, the high energy prism planes grow fast and the crystals change from hexagonal to trigonal shape. On the other hand, when the carbon content decreases, the high energy prism planes are dissolved accompanying split of (100) plane into (101) and (101) planes.

Silver was deposited on glass by electroless plating and electroplating. Surface properties were investigated using the AFM. Crystal structure of deposit layers was confirmed by TEM and XRD. Electroplating is performed by DC plating and pulse plating, respectively. This study resulted in followings, first, deposit of electroless plating showed fine grain and was similar to the amorphous structure. Second, electrodeposit on the electroless layer was revealed following results ; (1) more uniform layer and finer grains were obtained with increasing frequency (2) more isotropic structure was obtained with increasing frequency (3) finer grains at 25% duty cycle was obtained (4) grain size and roughness of the silver deposit was decreased with increasing frequency.
Single phase niobium nitride (NbN) coatings were deposited using asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering by varying pulse frequency and duty cycle of pulsed plasmas. Crystal structure, microstructure, morphology and mechanical properties were examined using XRD, FE-SEM, AFM and nanoindentation. Upon increasing pulse frequencies and decreasing duty cycles, the coating morphology was changed from a pyramidal-shaped columnar structure to a round-shaped dense structure with finer grains. Asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtered NbN coatings deposited at pulse frequency of 25 kHz is characterized by higher hardness up to 17.4 GPa, elastic modulus up to 193.9 GPa, residual compressive stress and a smaller grain size down to 27.5 nm compared with dc sputtered NbN coatings at pulse frequency of 0 kHz. The results suggest that the asymmetric bipolar pulsed dc sputtering technique is very beneficial to reactive deposition of transition-metal nitrides such as NbN coatings.

ZnO materials with a wide band gap of approximately 3.3 eV has been used in transparent conducting oxides (TCO) due to exhibitinga high optical transmission, but its low conductivity acts as role of a limitation for conducting applications. Recently, Ga or Al-doped ZnO (GZO, AZO) becomes transparent conducting materials because of high optical transmission and excellent conductivity. However, the fundamental mechanism underlying the improvement of electrical conductivity of the GZO is still the subject of debate. In this study, we have fully investigated the reasons of high conductivity through the characterization of plane defects, crystal orientation, doping contents, crystal structure in Zn1-xGaxO (x=0, 3, 5.1, 5.6, 6.6 wt%). We manufactured Zn1-xGaxO by sintering ZnO and Ga2O3 powers, having a theoretical density of 99.9% and homogeneous Ga-dopant distribution in ZnO grains. The GZO containing 5.6 wt% Ga represents the highest electrical conductivity of $7.5{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}m$. In particular, many twins and superlattices were induced by doping Ga in ZnO, revealed by X-ray diffraction measurements and TEM (transmission electron microscopy) observations. Twins developed in conventional ZnO crystal are generally formed at (110) and (112) planes, but we have observed the twins at (113) plane only, which is the first report in ZnO material. Interestingly, the superlattice structure was not observed at the grains in which twins are developed and the opposite case was true. This structural change in the GZO resulted in the difference of electrical conductivity. Enhancement of the conductivity was closely related to the extent of Ga ordering in the GZO lattice. Maximum conductivity was obtained at the GZO with a superlattice structure formed ideal ordering of Ga atoms.

PVT (Physical Vapor Transport) method has advantages in producing high quality, large scale wafers where many researches are being carried out to commercialize nitride semiconductors. However, complex process variables cause various defects when it had non-equilibrium growth conditions. Annealing process after crystal growth has been widely used to enhance the crystallinity. It is important to set appropriate temperature, pressure, and annealing time to improve crystallinity effectively. In this study, the effect of the annealing conditions on the crystalline structure variation of the AlN single crystal grown by PVT method was investigated with synchrotron whitebeam X-ray topography, electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and Rietveld refinement. X-ray topography analysis showed secondary phases, sub-grains, impurities including carbon inclusion in the single crystal before annealing. EBSD analyses identified that sub-grains with slightly tilted basal plane appeared and the overall number of grains increased after the annealing process. Rietveld refinement showed that the stress caused by the temperature gradient during the annealing process between top and bottom in the hot zone not only causes distortion of grains but also changes the lattice constant.
Grain-growth behavior in the $95Na_{1/2}Bi_{1/2}TiO_3-5BaTiO_3$ (mole fraction, NBT-5BT) system has been investigated with the addition of $Na_2CO_3$. When $Na_2CO_3$ is added to NBT-5BT, the growth rate is higher than desired and grains are already impinging each other during the initial stage of sintering. The grain size decreases as the sintering temperature increases. With the addition of $Na_2CO_3$, a liquid phase infiltrates the interfaces between grains during sintering. The interface structure can be changed to be more faceted and the interface migration rate can increase due to fast material transport through the liquid phase. As the sintering temperature increases, the impingement of abnormal grains increases because the number of abnormal grains increases. Therefore, the average grain size of abnormal grains can be decreased as the temperature increases. The phenomenon can provide evidence that grain coarsening in NBT-5BT with addition of $Na_2CO_3$ is governed by the growth of facet planes, which would occur via mixed control.
