An analytical procedure to analyze reinforced concrete (RC) beams subject to monotonic loadings is proposed on the basis of the moment-curvature relations of RC sections. Unlike previous analytical models which result the overestimation of stiffnesses and underestimation of structural deformations induced from ignoring the shear deformation and assuming perfect-bond condition between steel and concrete, the proposed relation considers the rigid-body-motion due to anchorage slip at the fixed end. The advantages of the proposed relation, compared with the previous numerical models, are on the promotion in effectiveness of analysis and reflection of influencing factors which must be considered in nonlinear analysis of RC beam by taking into account the nonlinear effects into the simplifying moment-curvature relation. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results are conducted to establish the applicability of the proposed model to the nonlinear analysis of RC structures.
The initiation of toppling is explored for a uniform stack of blocks that rotates slowly about its mid-base. As the stack passes through its vertical position ($\theta$=0), it is in free-fall rotation, and a critical inclination angle ${\theta}_c$ is reached at which the toppling stack "fails" or begins to crack or separate. For tall stacks (high aspect ratios), two modes of failure are hypothesized, for which the dynamic failure analyses are shown to correlate with experimental results. These block failure modes are similar to those observed for tall, toppling masonry structures with weak binding material between their brick or stone blocks.
2-stroke marine diesel engine has generally one exhaust valve and three fuel injection nozzle which are key component for engine's performance and combustion. Fuel injection and exhaust valve driving system are driven by rotating of camshaft. Rotation of crank shaft drives the cam shaft through gear train that is composed of $3{\sim}4$ gear wheels. Gear column supporting the gear wheel has to bear against the dynamics forces by engine running as well as gearing forces. In this paper, structural analysis for engine structure and fatigue strength assessment of welded joint is shown. Repeatedly full cyclic simulation during one cycle is performed to investigate the structural behavior of engine. Fatigue analysis is carried out based on IIW using submodeling technique to obtain more detailed stress distribution.

In the study, the inner flow characteristics were analyzed by modifying the inner design parameter of the vane-type vacuum pump. The effect of pressure generated by the inner flow of pump on the rotor and vane was analyzed. The design parameter was analyzed using the angle variation of tilting and rotation of the vane. MRF was used for the analysis conducted using a virtual condition where the rotor and vane are rotated. The pressure gained from the load of the rotor and vane in the flow analysis is used for the structure analysis. Based on the results, the effect of variable vane design was revealed in structural strength. The effect of centrifugal and friction force generated during pump operation on structural strength was also analyzed.

Recent investigations have pointed out that current code provisions specifying that the stiffness of reinforced concrete elements is strength independent, and therefore can be estimated prior to any strength assignment, is incorrect. A strength allocation strategy, suitable for preliminary structural design of medium height wall-frame dual systems, is presented for allocating strength in such buildings and estimating the dependable rigidities. The design process may be implemented by either the approximate continuous approach or the stiffness matrix method. It is based on the concept of the inelastic equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system which, the last few years, has been used to implement the performance based seismic design. The aforesaid strategy may also be used to determine structural configurations of minimum rotation distortion. It is shown that when the location of the modal centre of rigidity, as described in author's recent papers, is within a close distance from the mass axis the torsional response is mitigated. The methodology is illustrated in ten story building configurations, whose torsional response is examined under the ground motion of Kobe 1995, component KJM000.
An artificially modulated magnetic Co/Pd multilayer is one of the promising candidates for high density magneto-optic (MO) recording media, due to large Kerr rotation angle in the wavelength of a blue laser beam. however, since multilayer structure, as well as amorphous structure, is a non-equilibrium state in terms of free energy and MO recording is a kind of thermal recording which is conducted aound Curie temperature (Tc) of the recording media, when the multilayer is used for the MO recording media, changes in the multilayer structure are occurred as the amorphous structure do. Therefore, the assessment of the structural stability in the Co/Pd multilayer is crucially important both for basic research and applications. As the parameter of the structural stability in this research, modulation amplitude and particle size of the Co/Pd multilayer are measured in terms of Ar sputtering pressure and heat treatment temperature. From the results of the research, we find out that the magnetic exchange energy in the structural changes of a magnetic multilayer structure and suggest the operating temperature range for MO recording in the Co/Pd multilayer for the basic research and applications, respectively.
In this study an improved design method for the traditional A-type(or V-type) offshore template platform system was proposed to mitigate the vibration induced by the marine environmental loadings and the strong ground motions of earthquakes. A newly developed material model was combined into the structural system and then a nonlinear dynamic analysis in the time domain was carried out. The analysis was focused on the displacement and rotation induced by the input wave forces and ground motions, and the mitigation effect for these responses was evaluated when the viscoelastic damping devices were applied. The wave forces exerted on the offshore structures are based on Stokes fifth-order wave theory and Morison equation for small body. A step by step integration method was modified and used in the nonlinear analysis. It was found that the new design approach enhanced with viscoelastic dampers was efficient on the vibration mitigation for the structural system subjected to both the wave motion and the strong ground motion.

Based on the continuum approach, an investigation is made to get the forces and displacements of laterally loaded outrigger braced structures with a pair of coupled cores, and to show the effect of stiffening outriggers on the behavior of the structure. From the condition that the rotation of the core at the outrigger level is matched with the rotation of the corresponding outrigger, the outrigger restraining moment is derived analytically. From this, the core moment diagram, the column axial forces, and the horizontal displacements of the structure may be determined. Comparisons with the results by the program MIDAS-GEN for the structural models, have shown that this analysis can give reasonably accurate results for outrigger-braced structures with a pair of coupled cores. And a lateral displacement at the top of the structure is influenced by the outrigger location than the core location. Although the formulae are accurate only for idealized outrigger braced structures, they have a useful practical purpose in providing a guide to the behavior, and for making approximate estimates of the forces and displacements, in practical outrigger braced structures with a pair of coupled cores.

Critical response of seawater pump impeller shaft structure to various exciting loads is a fundamental factor in re-designing of the structure after its functional failure. In this paper, a typical case of the shaft structure's failure is investigated for re-designing purposes. Failure causes of interest are excessive bending moment, fatigue loads and dynamic resonance due to relevant motor rotation and unbalancing of the rotation loads. Static analyses of shaft structure under the conditions of concerned loads are carried out, followed by a dynamic investigation of the effects of resonance between the shaft and the motor on the structure. The relevant structural analyses are carried out using the Finite Element Methods combined with ANSYS code. Based on these, the primary cause for the shaft's structural failure is obtained. It is found that the change of the bending stiffness of the shaft is the primary concern in the re-designing process. A guideline for the re-design process of the seawater pump shaft structure is established, and a re-design scheme of the structure is proposed.

This paper presents current state of the prediction simulator of structural characteristics of machinery equipment accuracy. Developed accuracy prediction simulator proceeds and estimates the structural analysis between the designer and simulator through the internet for convenience of designer. 3D CAD model which is input to the accuracy prediction simulator would simplified by the process of removing the small hole, fillet and chamfer. And the structural surface joints would be presented as the spring elements and damping elements for the structural analysis. The structural analysis of machinery equipment joints, containing rotary motion unit, linear motion unit, mounting device and bolted joint, are presented using Finite Element Method and their experiment. Finally, a general method is presented to tune the static stiffness at a rotation joint considering the whole machinery equipment system by interactive use of Finite Element Method and static load experiment.
