  • In this study, actual scale welding were conducted at the USC thermal power plant turbine and main steam pipe casting candidate mock up material 9Cr-1.5Mo-CoVNbNB steel(CB2) and 9Cr-0.5Mo-MVNbN steel(P92). And to evaluate the welding process for the actual production, mechanical property testes were conducted for the weld metal. The Mock-up welding condition successfully led to an excellent structural welding joint between casting and pipe material.

  • ZnO-Si-ZnO multi-layer thin films have been deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). And then, the films have been annealed at 300$^{\circ}C$ in oxygen ambient pressure. Peak positions of ultraviolet (UV) and visible region were changed by addition of Si layer. Mobility of the films was improved slightly than ZnO thin film without Si layer. The structural property changed by inserting intermediate Si layer in ZnO thin film. The optical properties and structural properties of ZnO-Si-ZnO multi-layer thin films were characterized by PL(Photoluminescence) and XRB(X-ray diffraction) method, respectively. Electrical properties were measured by van der Pauw Hall measurements

  • Friction problems involving rubber components are frequently encountered in industrial applications. Their treatment within the framework of numerical simulations by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM) is the main issue of this paper. Special emphasis is placed on the choice of a suitable material model and the formulation of a contact model specially designed for the particular characteristics of rubber friction. A coupled thermomechanical approach allows for consideration of the influence of temperature on the frictional behavior. The developed tools are implemented in the commercial FE code ABAQUS. They are validated taking the sliding motion of a rubber tread block as example. Such simulations are frequently encountered in tire design and development. The simulations are carried out with different formulations for the material and the frictional behavior. Comparison of the obtained results with experimental observations enables to judge the suitability of the applied formulations on a structural scale.

  • The work is concerned with an investigation of the advantages stemming from the use of lightweight aggregate concrete in earthquake-resistant reinforced concrete construction. As the aseismic clauses of current codes make no reference to lightweight aggregate concrete beams made of lightweight aggregate concrete but designed in accordance with the code specifications for normal weight aggregate concrete, together with beams made from the latter material, are tested under load mimicking seismic action. The results obtained show that beam behaviour is essentially independent of the design method adopted, with the use of lightweight aggregate concrete being found to slightly improve the post-peak structural behaviour. When considering the significant reduction in deadweight resulting from the use of lightweight aggregate concrete, the results demonstrate that the use of this material will lead to significant savings without compromising the structural performance requirements of current codes.

  • Material nonlinear analyses of RC(Reinforced Concrete) beams considering the tension stiffening effect and plastic hinge length have been conducted. Instead of taking the sophisticated layer approach which has some limitations in application to the large structures with many degrees of freedom. the moment-curvature relationships of RC sections previously constructed through the section analysis have been used. To reduce the numerical instability in nonlinear analysis and to remove the imprecision in calculation of ultimate resisting capacity, according to the used finite element mesh size, the tension stiffening effect and plastic hinge length have been taken into consideration. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results have been conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed algorithms.

  • In this study, an explicit transient analysis program considering material and geometric nolinearities has been developed and used to analyze the dynamic behaviors of circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and catenary arches according to the change of shapes and boundary conditions. To understand dynamic behaviors of arches, first of all, the results of free vibration analysis for four kinds of arches are discussed. The results of transient analysis under impact loads we discussed in respect of boundary condition, change of height, and arch-shape. The dynamic behaviors of arches by nonlinear transient analysis considering both material and geometric nolinearities are also discussed.

  • A parallel nonlinear analysis program of prestressed concrete frame is migrated on a PC cluster system and a massively parallel processing system, CRAY T3E system, using MPI. The PC cluster system is configured with Pentium Ⅲ class PCs and fast ethernet. The CRAY T3E system is composed of a set of nodes each containing one Processing Element (PE), a memory subsystem and its distributed memory interconnect network. Parallel computing algorithms are implemented on element-wise processing parts including the calculation of stiffness matrix, element stresses and determination of material states, check of material failure and calculation of unbalanced loads. Parallel performance of the migrated program is evaluated through typical numerical examples.

  • For each construction material used, there is certain theoretical limit in sizes. For tall building construction, the reduction in slab weight is the first step to take in order to break such size limits. In this paper, the feasibility of such objective is proven and given by numerical analysis result. For a typical building slab, both concrete and advanced composite sandwich panels are considered. The concrete slab is treated as a special orthotropic plate to obtain more accurate result. For each panel, the deflection under the dead and live loads is compared, since both tensile and compressive strengths of the composites are far more higher than those of concrete. All types of sandwich panels considered, except one case, have weights less than one tenth of that of reinforced concrete slab, with deflections less than that of the concrete slab. The cost analysis result and manufacturing methods will be reported later.

  • In this paper, a nonlinear finite element analysis program NUCAS, which has been developed for assessment of pressure capacity and failure mode for nuclear containment building is described. Degenerated shell element with assumed strain method and low-order solid element with enhanced assumed strain method is adapted to microscopic material and elasto-plastic material model, respectively. Finally, the performance of the developed program is tested and demonstrated with several examples. From the numerical tests, the present results show a good agreement with experimental data or other numerical results.
