  • Information on the distribution of the basic random variables is essential for the accurate evaluation of structural reliability. The usual method for determining the distribution is to fit a candidate distribution to the histogram of available statistical data of the variable and perform appropriate goodness-of-fit tests. Generally, such candidate distributions would have two parameters that may be evaluated from the mean value and standard deviation of the statistical data. In the present paper, a-parameter Gamma distribution, whose parameters can be directly defined in terms of the mean value, standard deviation and skewness of available data, is suggested. The flexibility and advantages of the distribution in fitting statistical data and its significance in structural reliability evaluation are identified and discussed. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate these advantages.

  • Employing tilted forms in tall buildings is a relatively new architectural phenomenon, as are the cases with the Gate of Europe Towers in Madrid and the Veer Towers in Las Vegas. This paper studies structural system design options for tilted tall buildings and their performances. Tilted tall buildings are designed with various structural systems, such as braced tubes, diagrids and outrigger systems, and their structural performances are studied. Structural design of today's tall buildings built with higher strength materials is generally governed by lateral stiffness. Tilted towers are deformed laterally not only by lateral loads but also by dead and live loads due to their eccentricity. The impact of tilting tall buildings on the gravity and lateral load resisting systems is studied. Comparative evaluation of structural systems for tilted tall buildings is presented.

  • Different from new or reconstruction of an apartment housing, the structural safety in the remodelling construction can be obtained through the repair and strengthening process based on the safety diagnosis and evaluation of structural performance. In this study, structural performance of existing members such as, reinforced concrete slabs, beams and columns are investigated through experimental tests. The structural members were obtained from the existing apartment housing which will be demolished. Test results showed that most specimens have a sufficient structural capacity except for some special case, for example, specimens with severe cracks or concrete loss due to improper casting. This same severe deteriorated or defective structure members originated from bad concrete casting or careless construction process should be repaired and strengthened before an remodelling construction.

  • A safety evaluation of cable tunnel, which is a concrete box structure with telecommunication facilities in it, exposed to fire is given. The immediate field observation was performed to find out any sign of sudden structural failure. In some region, where the fire intensity was heavy, the spalling of concrete cover in upper slab occurred. Next, more careful investigation was done with proper non-desturctive testing methods and structural analysis taking into account the changes in material properties due to fire. It seems that there is no severe damage on concrete, reinforcements and over all structural system.

  • We studied on the characteristics of many kinds of tank cars carrying hazard materials and performed structural strength evaluation for tank of asphalt tank car using finite element analysis. We analyzed the tank strength according to JIS E 7102(Design Method for Tanks of Tank Cars). It was found that the maximum stress obtained at the area supported by the saddle is much lower than the yield stress and the criteria of JIS E 7102.

  • Recently, an unprecedented emerging infectious disease has rapidly spread, causing a global shortage of wards. Although various temporary beds have appeared, the supply of wards specializing in infectious diseases is required. Negative pressure isolation wards should maintain their function even after an earthquake. However, the current seismic design standards do not guarantee the negative pressure isolation wards' operational (OP) performance level. For this reason, some are not included in the design target even though they are non-structural elements that require seismic design. Also, the details of non-structural elements are usually determined during the construction phase. It is often necessary to complete the stability review and reinforcement design for non-structural elements within a short period. Against this background, enhanced performance objectives were set to guarantee the OP non-structural performance level, and a computerized tool was developed to quickly perform the seismic design of non-structural elements in the negative pressure isolation wards. This study created a spreadsheet-based computer tool that reflects the components, installation spacing, and design procedures of non-structural elements. Seismic performance review and design of the example non-structural elements were conducted using the computerized tool. The strength of some components was not sufficient, and it was reinforced. As a result, the time and effort required for strength evaluation, displacement evaluation, and reinforcement design were reduced through computerized tools.
