System identification of structures is one of the important aspects of structural health monitoring. The accuracy and efficiency of identification results is affected severely by measurement noises, especially when the structure system is large, such as bridge structures, and when online system identification is required. In this paper, the least square estimation (LSE) method is used combined with the substructure approach for identifying structural parameters of a cable-stay bridge with large degree of freedoms online. Numerical analysis is carried out by first dividing the bridge structure into smaller substructures and then estimates the parameters of each substructure online using LSE method. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach is capable of identifying structural parameters, however, the accuracy and efficiency of identification results depend highly on the noise sensitivities of loading region, loading pattern as well as element size.
The Conjugate Finite-Step Length" (CFSL) algorithm is proposed to improve the efficiency and robustness of first order reliability method (FORM) for reliability analysis of highly nonlinear problems. The conjugate FORM-based CFSL is formulated using the adaptive conjugate search direction based on the finite-step size with simple adjusting condition, gradient vector of performance function and previous iterative results including the conjugate gradient vector and converged point. The efficiency and robustness of the CFSL algorithm are compared through several nonlinear mathematical and structural/mechanical examples with the HL-RF and "Finite-Step-Length" (FSL) algorithms. Numerical results illustrated that the CFSL algorithm performs better than the HL-RF for both robust and efficient results while the CFLS is as robust as the FSL for structural reliability analysis but is more efficient.
This paper deals with a water-cooled direct drive permanent magnet (DD-PM) motor design for an injection-molding application. In order to meet the requirements for the target application and consider the practical problems of the manufacturing industry, the DD-PM motor is designed in consideration of efficiency and structural strength with many constraints. The performances of the designed motor are estimated not only by magnetic field analysis, but also by thermal and structural analysis. The design and analysis results are presented with experiment results.
This paper investigates the productivity growth in Korean railway transport. The productivity growth is calculated by a process of measuring of pure efficiency change index(PECI), scale efficiency change index(SECI), and technical change index(TCI), using Data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. The data cover the period 1999$\sim$2006; 1999$\sim$2003 are the pre-structural reform years and the post-structural reform years are 2004$\sim$2006. The framework for the analysis is Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) of the to investigate the impacts of structural reform on productivity growth, respectively. The inputs considered are the length of operating line, the number of staff, the number of coach and wagon, and the outputs are the trains movement of passenger and freight, and the traffic of passenger and freight. Results indicate that Korean railway experienced a annual productivity growth of approx. 3% after the structural reform.

An improved optimization algorithm for multi-objective and multi-level (MO/ML) optimum design of steel frames is proposed in this paper. In order to optimize the steel frames under seismic load, two main objective functions need to be considered for minimizing the structural weight and maximizing the strain energy. For the efficiency of the proposed method, well known multi-level optimization techniques using decomposition method that separately utilizes both system-level and element-level optimizations and an artificial constraint deletion technique are incorporated in the algorithm. And also dynamic analysis is executed to evaluate the implicit function of structural strain energy at each iteration step. To save the numerical efforts, an efficient reanalysis technique through sensitivity analysis of dynamic properties is unposed in the paper. The efficiency and robustness of the improved MOML algorithm, compared with a plain MOML algorithm, is successfully demonstrated in the numerical examples.

An efficient multi-level (EML) optimization algorithm using discrete variables of framed structures is proposed in this paper. For the efficiency of the proposed algorithm multi-level optimization techniques using a decomposition method that separates both system-level and element-level are incorporated in the algorithm In the system-level, to save the numerical efforts an efficient reanalysis technique through approximated structural responses such as moments and frequencies with respect to intermediate variables is proposed in the paper. Sensitivity analysis of dynamic structural response is executed by automatic differentiation (AD) that is a powerful technique for computing complex or implicit derivatives accurately and efficiently with minimal human effort. In the element-level, to use AISC W-sections a section search algorithm is introduced. The efficiency and robustness of the EML algorithm, compared with a conventional multi-level (CML) algorithm and single-level genetic algorithm is successfully demonstrated in the numerical examples.
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems can provide valuable information regarding the safety of structures during and after ground motions which can be used by authorities to reduce post-earthquake hazards. Strain gages as a key element play an important role in the success of SHM systems. Reducing the number of required strain gages while keeping the efficiency of SHM system not only can reduce the cost of structural health monitoring but also avoids storage and process of uninformative data. In this study, a method based on performance based seismic design of structures is proposed for ideal placement of stain gages in structures. The robustness and efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated through installation of strain gages on an Airport Traffic Control (ATC) Tower. The obtained results show that the number of required strain gages decrease significantly.

Most of the studies use model order reduction for low frequency (LF) response analysis due to their high computational efficiency. In LF response analysis, one of model order reduction, algebraic substructuring (AS) retains all LF modes when using the modal superposition. However, in mid-frequency (MF) response analysis, the LF modes make very little contribution and also increase the number of retained modes, which leads to loss of computational efficiency. Therefore, MF response analysis should consider low truncated modes to improve the computational efficiency. The current work is focused on improving the computational efficiency using a AS and a frequency sweep algorithm. Finite element simulation for a MEMS resonator array showed that the performance of the presented method is superior to a conventional method.
Recent trend of business is characterized by a recognition of importance of knowledge asset. Especially, this phenomenon is receiving more momentum as our society goes digital rapidly. However, most of literature on knowledge management is based on knowledge circulation from the corporate point of view, not from individual viewpoint. In this regard, this paper is concerned with proposing knowledge circulation process and its efficiency from the individual perspective. We adopted structural equation model or SEM to prove the statistical validity of our research framework. Eight hypotheses were built and tested empirically, leading to the fact that the knowledge utilization and sharing of individuals have a positive impact on the knowledge management efficiency.
