  • The turbine is an important component and has a significant impact on the thermodynamic efficiency of the organic Rankine cycle. A precise preliminary design is essential to developing efficient turbines. In addition, performance analysis and structural analysis are needed to evaluate the performance and structural safety. However, there are only a few exclusive studies on the development process of the radial inflow turbines for the organic Rankine cycle (ORC). In this study, a preliminary design of the ORC radial inflow turbine was performed. Subsequently, the performance and structural analysis were also carried out. The RTDM, which was developed as an in-house code, was used in the preliminary design process. The results of the performance analysis were found to be in good agreement with target performances. Structural analysis of the designed turbine was also carried out in order to determine whether the material selection for this study is suitable for the flow conditions of the designed turbine, and it was found that the selected aluminum alloy is suitable for the designed turbine. However, the reliability of the preliminary design algorithms and numerical methods should be strictly verified by an actual experimental test.

  • Force based design (FBD) approach is prevalent in most of the national seismic design codes world over. Direct displacement based design (DDBD) and energy based design (EBD) approaches are relatively new methods of seismic design which claims to be more rational and predictive than the FBD. These three design approaches are conceptually distinct and imparts different strength, stiffness and ductility property to structural members for same plan configuration. In present study behavioural assessment of frame of six storey RC building designed using FBD, DDBD and EBD approaches has been performed. Lateral storey forces distribution, reinforcement design and results of nonlinear performance using static and dynamic methods have been compared. For the three approaches, considerable difference in lateral storey forces distribution and reinforcement design has been observed. Nonlinear pushover analysis and time history analysis results show that in FBD frame plastic deformation is concentrated in the lower storey, in EBD frame large plastic deformation is concentrated in the middle storeys though the inelastic hinges are well distributed over the height and, in DDBD frame plastic deformation is approximately uniform over the height. Overall the six storey frame designed using DDBD approach seems to be more rational than the other two methods.

  • In domestic, irregular walls such as T, L, H and Box shapes are considered as rectangular wall in the design of bearing wall apartment building. The strengths of walls, therefore, can be underestimated in case of using the current design process. Irregular walls are connected to each other as rigid joint so that part of the load can be resisted by the wall perpendicular to the load direction. This resistance can be caused by the effective width of perpendicular wall. This additional resistance by the perpendicular wall increases the strength of structural walls. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effective widths of flanged walls with different aspect ratios by using FEM analyses. the results from finite element method are compared with effective flange widths of some code provisions.

  • In this study, steel-pier's structural behavior by design variables of ribs were analyzed in order to improve structural details of ribs supporting double base plates. A numerical analysis was conducted using commercial FE analysis program. Anchor bolts and reinforced bars were made of BEAM element, and coefficient of friction was applied to contact surfaces. After that, the analytical result was compared with experiment of previous study to verify analysis methods. Steel-pier's load-displacement relation was analyzed according to various rib's design variables (rib's central angle, height, thickness) by using proven analysis methods, and proper rib's design ranges were proposed.

  • Recent industrial requirements for highly precise shape processing have brought the electric discharge machining (EDM) in great need. High precision in EDM is primarily achieved by high performance controllers. However there exists inherent precision loss due to structural deformation. On this background, we study structural deformation characteristics of wire cut EDM via finite element (FE) analysis and axiomatic design. Two different wire cut EDMs are selected as analysis models. 3D CAD package I-Deas is first used to construct FE models of wire cut EDMs, and then ABAQUS FE code is used for following structural analysis. Pertinency of FE mesh refinement is discussed in terms of ${\eta}-factor$. It is shown that performance accuracy of EDM depends strongly on the structural characteristics. Some design enhancements are suggested in an axiomatic design point of view. Finally we provide weight and temperature induced displacement discrepancies between wire end points as position functions of each subframe.

  • Temporal supports is proposed for the large block construction of a double-deck truss girder of a bundle type cable-stayed bridge. The design force of the temporal bents cannot be evaluated by a conventional design procedure with gust factored static wind loads. The uplift forces in BS5400 also can not estimate the design forces of the temporal bents properly for the turbulent wind loads. A frequency-domain buffeting analysis is performed to evaluate the design forces of the temporal bents considering the interactions between the girder and temporal supports. Two cases of modeling are compared to estimate the stiffness contribution of temporal supports in determining design forces, i.e., an analysis model including temporal bents in the structural analysis modeling and an analysis model with fixed supports at the bent tops neglecting the stiffness of temporal bents. The consideration of bent stiffness usually generates smaller reaction forces than rigid support modeling. Consequently, the effectiveness and usefulness of the buffeting analysis procedure with full modeling of temporal supports are demonstrated for the design of a temporal bents of the construction of a bundle type cable-stayed bridge.

  • Non-structural elements, such as equipment, are typically affixed to a building's floor or ceiling and move in tandem with the structure during an earthquake. Seismic forces acting upon non-structural elements traverse the ground and the building's structure. Considering this seismic load transmission mechanism, it becomes imperative to account for the interactions between soil, structure, and equipment, establishing seismic design procedures accordingly. In this study, a Soil-Structure-Equipment Interaction (SSEI) model is developed. Through seismic response analysis using this model, how the presence or absence of SSEI impacts equipment behavior is examined. Neglecting the SSEI aspect when assessing equipment responses results in an overly conservative evaluation of its seismic response. This emphasizes the necessity of proposing an analytical model and design methodology that adequately incorporate the interaction effect. Doing so enables the calculation of rational seismic forces and facilitates the seismic design of non-structural elements.

The purpose of this study is design of three-dimensional bending machine by analysis of bending process and structural analysis simulation. The analysis is carried out by FEM simulation using DEFORM and CATIA V5 software. The copper-tube is modeled by shell elements and the machine is modeled by placing proper shell and solid finite elements and fictitious mass properties to represent the real one. The final results of analysis are applied to the design of three-dimensional bending machine and the machine is successfully developed.

  • The structural behavior of welded steel box columns subjected to axial compression and combined load of axial and horizontal load is described. The nonlinear stress-strain relation of the material and residual stress resulted from welds were included in the analysis. Inelastic buckling analysis of hollow rectangular sections of various width-thickness and slenderness ratios was carried out using the semi-analytical and spline finite strip method to investigate the local and global bucking stress and mode interaction. The buckling stress was compared with test results and design curves. Post-buckling behavior was traced by the finite element program(ADINA) and compared with experimental results. The comparison showed that the ultimate stress can be used for the design purpose.

  • For the structural analysis of ship structures finite element method is generally used but it requires lots of working and computing time from the design viewpoint. Therefore, it is desirable to adopt a new analysis method which gives little computing time and high accuracy instead of finite element method to carry out various alternative design and optimum design. In this study, from the analysis viewpoint, structural analysis of oil tankers is carried out to verify the effectiveness of the generalized slope deflection method and the new equivalent curved beam theory which were formulated by the authors and their superiority is verified by comparison of the computing time and the results of accuracy with existing methods.
