  • This paper has proposed a new parameter to interpret the effects of plastic deformation in bending of strips in cylindrical die and punch. With reference to the parameter, we have provided an insight on the separation between strips and punches, the occurrence of the multi-point bending during the process of deformation, the final shapes of strips, and the springback ratios. Also using the parameter, we have considered the different effects between the bending deformation in the cylindrical die and the bending deformation due to pure bending.

  • Grating spectrograph observation in near-infrared bands requires wavelength calibrations. We first need to extract order-strips from the echellogram data using flat images, and then to correct the spatial distortions and wavelength scales of the order strips using calibration arc lamps or the telluric OH emission lines. For very high resolution spectrograph using echelle, however, the arc lamps do not have enough emission lines in the order-strips, so we usually use the OH lines for accurate wavelength calibrations in wavelengths shorter than 2.3 microns. In this poster, we present wavelength calibration methods for longer wavelength bands using the telluric absorption lines in early-type stellar spectra and the telluric atmospheric transmission models. This technique will be applied to the data reduction pipeline for the IGRINS.

  • Strengthening of civil infrastructure with advanced composites have recently become one of the most popular methods. The use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strips plates and fabric for strengthening of reinforced concrete structures has well established design guidelines and standards. Research on the application of FRP composites to steel structures compared to concrete structures is limited, especially for shear strengthening applications. Whereas, there is a need for cost-effective system that could be used to strengthen steel high-way bridge girders to cope with losses due to corrosion in addition to continuous demands for increasing traffic loads. In this study, a parametric finite element study is performed to investigate the effect of applying thick CFRP strips diagonally on webs of plate girders on the shear strength of end-web panels. The study focuses on illustrating the effect of several geometric parameters on nominal shear strength. Hence, a formula is developed to determine the enhancement of shear strength gained upon the application of CFRP strips.

  • In the present study, the nonlocal strain gradient theory is used to predict the size-dependent buckling and post-buckling behavior of geometrically imperfect nano-scale piezo-flexomagnetic plate strips in two modes of direct and converse flexomagnetic effects. The first-order shear deformation plate theory is used to analyze analytically nano-strips with simply supported boundary conditions. The nonlinear governing equations of equilibrium and associated boundary conditions are derived using the principle of minimum total potential energy with consideration of the von Kármán-type of geometric nonlinearity. A closed-form solution of governing differential equation is obtained, which is easily usable for engineers and designers. To validate the presented formulations, whenever possible, a comparison with the results found in the open literature is reported for buckling loads. A parametric study is presented to examine the effect of scaling parameters, plate slenderness ratio, temperature, the mid-plane initial rise, flexomagnetic coefficient, different temperature distributions, and magnetic potential, in case of the converse flexomagnetic effect, on buckling and post-buckling loads in detail.

  • Study was conducted to determine and assess the effect of different type of denture adhesives on the incisal bite force of complete denture wearers until the dislodgement of upper denture, using pressure transducer. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 30 patients out of 100 were included in the study. Based on the Kapur's method of scoring denture retention and stability, these patients were divided into 3 groups-Group A - Clinically good dentures; Group B - Clinically fair dentures; and Group C - Clinically poor dentures. A custom made occlusal force meter was constructed based on the load cell type of pressure transducers. Different adhesives (powder, paste and adhesive strips) were used in the study. Complete denture wearers were asked to bite on the load cell and the readings of incisal bite force were recorded. The readings of incisal bite force were subjected to statistical analysis using Repeated measures ANOVA followed by post-hoc bonferroni test. RESULTS. The result suggests that denture adhesives improved the incisal bite force of complete denture wearers significantly The incisal bite force (in kg) in Group A without using adhesives, with powder adhesive, with paste adhesive and with adhesive strips was found to be 2.48 (${\pm}0.16$), 3.43 (${\pm}0.11$), 6.01 (${\pm}0.11$), 3.22 (${\pm}0.09$) respectively. The incisal bite force (in kg) in Group B without using adhesives, with powder adhesive, with paste adhesive and with adhesive strips was found to be 1.87 (${\pm}0.18$), 3.35 (${\pm}0.14$), 5.34 (${\pm}0.18$), 3.21 (${\pm}0.12$) respectively. The incisal bite force (in kg) in Group C without using adhesives, with powder adhesive, with paste adhesive and with adhesive strips was found to be 1.00 (${\pm}0.17$), 3.07 (${\pm}0.14$), 4.37 (${\pm}0.26$), 2.99 (${\pm}0.14$) respectively. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that the use of denture adhesive was found to be significantly effective in improving the incisal bite force of complete dentures until the dislodgement of upper denture. Fittydent paste adhesive was found to be more effective than the powder and strips adhesives. The improvement in incisal bite force was found to be higher in Group C in comparison to that of Group A and Group B.

  • The effect of $Cd^{2+}$ on stomatal apertures of epidermal strips and intact leaves in Commelina communis L. was investigated. Cadmium stimulated stomatal opening. The stomata, treated with 100 $\mu$M $Cd^{2+}$ opened to a degree of about 8.38 fm, but the stomata, treated with no cadmium opened to 3.74 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In order to show that there was no mechanical or osmotic impediment preventing the stomata in the epidermal strips, salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) were used. The treatment of 100 $\mu$M SA and 1 $\mu$M ABA inhibited 14% and 28% of stomatal opening, respectively. Other heavy metals such as $Al^{3+} and Ag^{2+}$ were also used to investigate the effect of the stomatal apertures. The treatment of $Al^{3+} and Ag^{2+}$ also stimulated 19% and 41% of stomatal opening. To understand how cadmium open stomata, the effect of cadmium on the K+ influx into the epidermal strips was investigated. $Cd^{2+}$, SA, ABA inhibited 98%, 28%, 34% of K+ uptake respectively. 3-weeks old Commelina was transferred to and grown in Hoagland solution (0,5 mM $Cd^{2+}$, 10 mM $Cd^{2+}$) for 4 days and stomatal conductance were measured. The treatment of 5 mM $Cd^{2+}$ and 10 mM $Cd^{2+}$ showed about 51% and 70% inhibition of stomatal conductance, respectively Therefore, it could be concluded that stomata in epidermal strips and intact leaves behaved differently and cadmium- stimulated stomatal opening was due to the result of cadmium uptake into the epidermal strips instead of K+. • The tension-length relationships and reactivity of vascular smooth muscle in longitudinal strips from portal vein ana in helical strips from thoracic aorta and pulmonary artery of normotensive control and cadmium-hypertensive rabbits were studied in vitro. 1. The mean arterial pressures of non-poisoned control rabbits was $87.0{\pm}4.7 mmHg$. However, Cd-poisoned group revealed the significant increase in pressure by $109.04{\pm}2.8 mmHg$ (p<0.005). 2. By tension-length studies, strips from portal vein of Cd-poisoned group stretched a greater percent increase in length in response to an applied resting force from 0.25 to 5 g than did those from non-poisoned group. On the contrary, strips from thoracic aorta of Cd-poisoned group showed less compliant than those from control, i.e. the former underwent a less percent increase in length than the latter. Passive tension-length relations of pulmonary artery was unaffected by Cd-hypertension. 3. The force of contraction(active tension) was significantly lowered in strips from aorta of Cd-hypertensive group throughout the range of $0.5{\sim}2g$ passive tension. However, there was no significant difference in the development of active tension of portal vein or pulmonary artery of both groups. 4. The $K^+$-contraction in the portal vein, aorta and pulmonary artery of Cd-poisoned group made no difference in the active force from those of control group. 5. The force of contraction in the strips from aorta of Cd-poisoned group was significanty decreased compared to that of control. The results suggested that the alterations in vascular reactivity to contracting substances and in distensibility to passive tension were induced in the Cd-hypertensive rabbits.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tooth whitening efficacy of 2.9% hydrogen peroxide strip with primer gel of alkaline condition and containing metallic salts as catalyst in-vitro. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) disk was made by compressing and sintering 0.3 g of mixture of HAP powder and polyvinyl alcohol. This HAP disk was stained using modified Stookey's methods. Main bleaching materials were 2.9% hydrogen peroxide strips and the primer gel containing metallic salts as catalyst and pH controller. Stained HAP disks were allocated to each control or experimental groups by color grade. Stained HAP disks were treated for 30 minutes in $37^{\circ}C/80%$ incubator for wetting, then each primer gel according to control or each test group was spread and strips were attached. After 30 minutes for each group strips were detached and HAP disks were washed, dried then color was measured by colorimeter. Efficacy was evaluated by comparing ${\Delta}L$ values of HAP disks at baseline and after treated. Among some kinds of metallic salts for as catalyst, ferric chloride showed best improvement of efficacy and it was statistically significant (p<0.05) compared to control group. Evaluating whitening efficacy according to various pH of primer, efficacy using primer of alkaline condition was increased significantly (p<0.05) compared to control and primers of acidic or neutral conditions. Evaluating whitening efficacy for time course, efficacy of test group for 30 minutes was similar to that of control for 120 minutes. It can be concluded that 2.9% hydrogen peroxide strips using with primer of alkaline condition and containing ferric chloride showed significantly increased whitening efficacy compared to the case of strips only.

  • The inhibitory effect of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on the isolated intestinal strips of the tortoise (Amyda japonica), rat, rabbit and guinea pig was investigated. 1) The strips from the middle or lower part of the tortoise intestine responded with relaxation to 5-HT $(10^{-9}{\sim}10^{-5}g/ml)$, and the magnitude of the relaxation was proportional to the dose of 5-HT. The rectal part of the tortoise intestine, in contrast, showed contraction, the magnitude of which also was proportional to the dose of 5-HT. 2) Various blocking agents such as methysergide, morphine, tetracaine, nethalide, bretylium, hexamethonium, mecamylamine and chlorisondamine, showed no selective blocking activity on the relaxant effect of 5-HT on the tortoise intestine. The inhibitory effect of isoproterenol on the tortoise intestine, however, was selectively blocked by nethalide, and the stimulatory effect of 5-HT on the rectal part of the tortoise was blocked by methysergide. 3) In the presence of 5-HT, the stimulatory effect of DMPP on the tortoise intestine was remarkably attenuated, whereas that of acetylcholine and $BaCl_2$ was little affected. In the presence of isoproterenol, the stimulatory effect of acetylcholine and $BaCl_2$ were affected, but that of DMPP was little affected. 4) Large dose of 5-HT($10^{-4}$g/ml) produced inhibitory effect on the strips from the distal part of the isolated colon of the rat, rabbit and guinea pig, when the strips had been exposed to 5-HT($10^{-4}$g/ml), methysergide or phen`oxybenzamine. 5) Bretylium, as well as nethalide, abolished or remarkably reduced, in a few cases of the experiments, the inhibitory effect of the large dose of 5-HT on the distal part of the colon, whereas morphine did not affect it. 6) The ileal strips of the guinea pig also showed relaxation, as in the colonic strips, having been exposed to the large dose of 5-HT or phenoxybenzamine. This effect, however, was not obsered in the case of the rabbit ileum. 7) The property of the action-site of 5-HT in the tortoise intestine seemd to be different from the 5-HT receptors which have been revealed by several investigators. 8) Adrenergic component seemed to be participated in the inhibitory effect of 5-HT on the colon of the rat and rabbit.
