This study is aimed at the effective measurement plan of discontinuity orientation on rock mass. The discontinuity orientation is expressed as three methods. strike/dip. dipdirection/dip (a three digit number / a two digit number) and right hand rule. Generally, strike/dip is measured with clinometer. and dipdirection/dip with silva compass(type15). A sign of strike/dip. discontinuity orientation is used to geological survey. and dipdirection/dip to engineering. Dipdirection/dip converted by strike/dip measured with clinometer is useful on the statistical analysis of a lot of data. To measure the azimuth of the dip with clinometer and to change strike/dip to dipdirection/dip may have potential errors in each person. The newly designed apparatus, clinometer equipped by a rotational azimuth plate and an arrow to measuring strike and dipdirection, has been developed to measure effectively the discontinuity orientation with two method (strike/dip and dipdirection/dip). The measuring method of discontinuity orientation with clinometer having newly designed apparatus is effective one for accurate measurement of strike as well as dipdirection which is degrees counted clockwise from true north. Used by clinometer with newly designed apparatus, concurrent measuring strike/dip and dipdirecton/dip of discontinuity is possible. In application to measuring discontinuity orientation on rock slope, it has been recognized that the newly designed method, unambiguously, led to drop measuring errors comparing with existing measuring apparatuses. Therefore, it is considered that measuring method of discontinuity orientation (strike/dip and dipdirecton/dip) by the newly designed apparatus is useful to one in geological engineering investigation of road design, and to unskilled investigator.
In this paper, the automatic determination algorithm of strike and dip of a line source using gravity gradient on a single profile is proposed. In general, the gravity gradient tensor due to a line source has only two independent components because of its 2-Dimensional (2-D) characteristics. However, if the line source has the strike and dip regarding the observation profile, it comes to have five independent components. The proposed algorithm of the determination both strike and dip is based on the rotational transform that converts full gravity gradient tensor to reduced 2-D gravity gradient tensor. The least-square method is applied in order to find optimum rotational angles that make one of the row components minimalized simultaneously. The two synthetic cases of a line source are represented; one has strike only and the other has both strike and dip. This study finds that the automatic determination method using gravity gradient tensor can find directions of a line source in each case.
The purpose of this study is to analyze shear fracture system using landslide location occurred 1998 at Janghung area. For the geological implication, foliation was surveyed and analyzed, and location of landslide, geological structure and topography were constructed into spatial database using GIS. With the constructed spatial database, shear fracture system was assessed by the relation analysis between strike and dip of the foliation and aspect and slope of the topography. We compared strike and dip of foliation and aspect and slope of topography and recognized the typical fracture pattern, strike and dip of joint, that coincided with shear fracture system. The result tells us that foliation of gneiss has geometrical relation to joint or fault that leading landslide. GIS was used to analyze vast data efficiently and the result can be used to assess the landslide susceptibility as important factor.
The determination algorithm of the location of a line source with strike and dip using the gravity gradient tensor on a single profile is proposed. We already proposed the determination of strike and dip in the previous paper and then, now we improved the algorithm to locate a line source after determining strike and dip. The strike and dip of the line source can be determined by rotating the gravity gradient tensor matrix as reducing 2 independent components. Using the ratio of remaining 2 components, the location can be determined by the least square manner of the pointing vectors on each observation point. A synthetic model is tested for proving the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.

During engineering projects, land use and geologic investigations, topographic information by means of Photointerpretation and Photographic Survey often plays an important role. As some recent methods of Dip and Strike determination were used without considering the characteristics of the geometrical conditions of photography, it is necessary to present an accurate and rapid formula. In this paper, Dip and Strike determination using photogrammetric method was theoretically approached with geometrical and mathematical models using trigonometric formula and plane equation, respectively.
A new trigonometrical method for calculating total slip (T) of faulting is presented. The parameters for the calculations are used rake of fault striation, strike and dip of fault and of index planar structure such as bedding plane. The faults are groupped into three types. The direction of plunging of fault striation is out of a range ${\pm}90^{\circ}$ to the bedding dip direction in $360^{\circ}$ system, which is groupped into the type I. Meanwhile, the case of the direction lies in the above range can be separated into two different types, type II and type III, according to relative largeness of the angles rake of fault striation and i (see text). The type II has smaller rake than angle i and the type III has larger rake than angle i. Here I propose a few equations for calculating not only total slip (T) but strike slip (L) or dip slip (S) of the faulting. The equations are adapted selectively to the types of fault mentioned before. The limitation of the method is that the equations do not fit to polyphase faulting.

Source parameters of the December 13, 1996 Yeongweol earthquake are estimated using the grid test technique. Thirty polarities of P waves recorded at KMA, KIGAM, KSRS and JAPAN stations are used for the event. The obtained fault plane solution shows predominantly strike-slip motion with small amount of thrust component. The orientation of the fault is 180$\pm$10$^{\circ}$in strike, 50$\pm$5$^{\circ}$in dip and 150$\pm$5$^{\circ}$in rake, or 292$\pm$3$^{\circ}$in strike, 65$\pm$5$^{\circ}$in dip and 30$\pm$10$^{\circ}$ in rake. These solutions are very similar to those of earthquakes occurred at Sagju, Pohang and offshore Gunsan. The compressional axis of stress field is trending from ENE to WSW, which is consistent with the previously defined typical regional tectonic stress orientation in and around Korean Peninsula.. From the result of this study and other source mechanisms around the Korean Peninsula, we are of opinion that tectonic stress around the Korean Peninsula may be more attributed to the collision of Indian plate with the Eurasian plate than subduction of Pacific and Philippine plates.
From the seismic network data of the Korea Institute of Geology, Mining & Materials during 1995-1996, we derived a composite fault-plane solution of the microearthquakes occurred in the Yangsan fault area. The composite fault-plane solution of nine events shows the orientation of fault 15 ± 3°in strike, 60 ± 8°in dip and 140°in rake or 128 ± 3°in strike, 56 ± 8°in dip and 37°in rake. The compressional axis of the stress field trends ENE to WSW, and this field suggests strike-slip motion with thrust component. The result is consistent with the 1996 Yeong-weol event and the stress field in and around the Korean Peninsula, previously reported.
An Interpretation technique is presented to determine strike, dip, velocity and depth of 3-D planar layers from refraction or reflection traveltime curve. This interpretation technique determines the direction of emerging ray from the slope of the traveltime curve and traces the emerging ray to the refractor or reflector. The ray direction in the last layer is used to decide the normal vector to the refractor or reflector from whick its dip, strike and velocity are calculated. The vertical depth to the refractor or reflector is computed by using the intercept or zero-offset time and the ray direction in each layer. Some tests on the interpretation method are performed for the sysnthetic traveltimes generated in 3-D model layers and show that the paramerters of the model layers are accurately determined.

Logic trees for probabilistic tsunami hazard assessment include numerous variables to take various uncertainty on earthquake generation into consideration. Results from the hazard assessment vary in different way as more variables are considered in the logic tree. This study is conducted to estimate the effects of various scaling laws and fault parameters on tsunami hazard at the nearshore of Busan. Active fault parameters, such as strike angle, dip angle and asperity, are adjusted in the modelling of tsunami propagation, and the numerical results are used in the sensitivity analysis. The influence of strike angle to tsunami hazard is not as much significant as it is expected, instead, dip angle and asperity show a considerable impact to tsunami hazard assessment. It is shown that the dip angle and the asperity which determine the initial wave form are more important than the strike angle for the assessment of tsunami hazard in the East Sea.
