  • This paper presents a Strut-and-Tie Model for reinforced concrete (RC) columns subject to lateral loading. The proposed model is based on the loading path for the post-yield state, and the geometries of struts and tie are determined by the stress field of post-yield state. The analysis procedure of the Strut-and-Tie Model is that 1) the shear force and displacement at the initial yield state are calculated and 2) the relationship between the additional shear force and the deformation is determined by modifying the geometry of the longitudinal strut until the ultimate limit state. To validate the developed model, the ultimate strength and associated deformation obtained by experimental results are compared with the values predicted by the model. Good agreements between the proposed model and the experimental data are observed.

  • The potential offered by the thermo-mechanical properties of shape memory alloys (SMA) in structural engineering applications has been the topic of many research studies during the last two decades. The main issues concern the long-term predictability of the material behaviour and the fatigue lifetime of the macro structural elements (as different from the one of wire segments). The laboratory tests reported in this paper are carried out on bar specimens and they were planned in order to pursue two objectives. First, the creep phenomenon is investigated for two different alloys, a classical Ni-Ti alloy and a Cu-based alloy. The attention is then focused on the Cu-based alloy only and its fatigue characteristics at given temperatures are investigated. Stress and thermal cycles are alternated to detect any path dependency.

  • The effects of pre-indentation technique are presented for A12024-T3 Alclad alloy using as skin material for aircraft fuselage and wing. Indentations were applied to specimens to be placed on the presumed path of fatigue crack growth before fatigue tests. Tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on the edge cracked specimens in the L-T orientation. Test results were analyzed to investigate the effectiveness of pre-indentation with the variation of specimen's thickness, position of indentation and applied maximum stress. Fatigue crack retardation by pre-indentation is well recognized in the various conditions.

  • As linear scheduling method has been used since 1929, Empire State Building linear schedule, it is being applied in various fields such as construction and manufacturing. When addressing concurrent critical path occurring on linear schedule of construction, the empirical researches stress the resource management which should be applied for optimizing work flow, flexible work productivity and continuos resource allocation. However, work relationships has been usually overlooked for making the linear schedule from existing network schedule. Therefore, this research analyze the previous researches related to linear scheduling model and then propose the method that can be applied for adopting the relationships of network schedule to the linear schedule.

  • Presented are the estimation of the probability distribution of fatigue crack growth life and reliability assessment of structures by simulating material resistance to fatigue crack growth along a crack path. The material resistance is treated as a Weibull stochastic process. A non-Gaussian stochastic fields simulation method proposed by Shimozuka, et al is applied with the statistical data obtained experimentally. Test results are obtained for $\Delta$K constant amplitude load in tension with stress ratio of R=0.2 and three specimen thicknesses of 6, 12 and 18mm. This simulation method is useful to estimate the probability distribution of fatigue crack growth life and the smallest life.

  • A nonlinear finite element method is presented to evaluate the torsional buckling moment and failure of composite laminated cylinders. For the progressive failure analysis, the complete unloading method is used based on the maximum stress failure criteria. An arc-length method is incorporated to trace the postbuckling equilibrium path. Present finite element method is verified by the existing experimental and analytical results. The results of the parametric study show that the torsional buckling moments are sensitive to the geometric change, but are not much affected by the lay-up angle. All cylinders tested numerically show the unstable torsional buckling, and therefore the torsional buckling always leads to the catastrophic failure.

  • For a rotating body with cracks, the new energy release rate equation is presented. The derived equation is different from the other researcher's results. It is a path-independent integral which excluded the derivatives of displacements near the crack tip, thereby improving the numerical accuracy of the energy release rate computation. Moreover, as the equation was derived on basis of the energy principle and non-linear elasticity without assumptions, it can applied to the cracked body with arbitrary shape under elastic-plastic deformation. Several examples are treated to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method compared to existing methods.

  • A new and efficient algorithm for the integration of the thermal-elasto-plastic constitutive equation is proposed. While it falls into the category of the return mapping method, the algorithm adopts the three point approximation of plastic corrector within one time increment step. The results of its application to a von Mises-type thermal-elasto-plastic model with combined hardening and temperature-dependent material properties show that the accurate iso-error maps are obtained for both angular and radial errors. The accuracy achieved is because the predicted stress increment in a single step calculation follows the exact value closely not only at the end of the step but also through the whole path. Also, the comparison of the computational time for the new and other algorithms shows that the new one is very efficient.

  • The vertical roller mill is the important machine grinding and mixing various crude materials in the manufacturing process of portland cement. Table liner is one of grinding elements of vertical roller mill and is subjected to the cyclic bending stress by rollers load and the centrifugal force by rotation of table. It demands $4{\times}10^7$ cycle but has $4{\times}10^6{\sim}8{\times}10^6$ cycle. It fractures at the edge of grinding path of outside roller. The repair expense for it amounts to 30% of total maintenance of vertical roller mill. Therefore, this study shows the fracture mechanism of table liner for vertical roller mill using HDM and fatigue analysis

  • A polishing machine adopting a new unique structural mechanism has been developed, named as a swing-arm type polishing machine. The mechanism is such that the tool path tracks on a spherical surface, of which the diameter is adjusted by setting up the machine mechanism properly. It has a strong benefit especially for polishing axis-symmetric concave mirror surfaces. The swing-arm type polishing machine with 5-axes has been designed in order to polish a concave mirror surface lip to diameter of 2 meters. The drawings are made using 3D CAD and strain-stress analysis has been done by finite element method. AC servo-motor has been used to move the swing arm and a operating software has been developed using a LapVIEW tool. Result of the test run was satisfactory which convinces the usefulness of the swing-arm type polishing machine.
