This paper deals with the applicability of linear elastic fracture mechanics under centrifugal force. Stress intensity factors K are calculated as a function of the inclination crack of length 2a, the position at different angular velocities 1200rpm, 2400rpm and at different values of the inclination crack angle .phi. ( .phi. = 0 .deg. , 15 .deg. , 30 .deg. , 45 .deg. , 60 .deg. , 75 .deg. , 90 .deg. ) and are measured in models of rotation disks using a boundary element method. Especially, stress intensity factors $K_{l}$ and $K_{ll}$ obtained separately from the crack tip of the mixed mode, were used to further investigate the influence of $K_{l}$ and $K_{ll}$ on fracture in rotating disks. With the increase in the speed of rotation, the effect of K/ sub l/became larger where as that of $K_{ll}$ became small. For the increase in the inclination crack angle .phi. , a decrease in $K_{l}$ and an increase in $K_{ll}$ were observed.
In this study, tensile and fatigue crack propagation tests machined from actual wheels were performed. FEM analysis also was performed on the crack that was assumed to be 15 mm in depth under the wheel tread surface. The stress intensity factors K I and K II at the crack tip under the stress($P_{max}=911.5MPa$) due to a rolling contact were analyzed for crack growth characteristics. As a result, the perpendicular crack was found to be more dangerous compared to the parallel one. It is found that in the wheel fatigue crack, parallel to the wheel tread surface, the crack with its length 2a = 2.4mm starts to propagate due to the fact that the effective stress intensity factor access to the threshold stress intensity factor($K_{th}=16.04MPa{\sqrt{m}}$) of the wheel.

The steady state thermal stress intensity factors (TSIF's) are analyzed for hypocycloid, symmetric airfoil and symmetric lip type rigid inclusions embedded in infinite elastic solids, using Boganoff's complex variable approach in plane thermoplasticity. Two thermal conditions are considered, one with an uniform heat flow disturbed by an insulated rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape and the other with an uniform heat flow disturbed by a rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape with fixed boundary temperature. The tendencies of TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape are somewhat different from those of traction free cusp cracks. However, if k=-1, the non-dimensionalized TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape become those of traction free cusp cracks like the tendencies of the SIF's under mechanical loading conditions. The thermal stress and displacement components for a rigid circular inclusion of radius Ro are drived from the results of a hypocycloid crack type rigid inclusion.
The effect of geometry factors on the combined mode stress intensity factor behaviors of a slant crack in a non-uniform thickness material was analysed by 2-dimensional theoretical analysis. The analysis is based on the Laurent's series expansions of complex potentials where the complex coefficients of the series are determined from the compatibility and the equilibrium conditions of the thickness interface and the stress free conditions of the crack surface. In numerical calculations the perturbation technique is employed. The expressions for the crack tip stress intensity factor are given in the form of power series of dimensionless crack length $\lamda$, and the function of crack slant angle $\alpha$ and thickness ratio $\beta$. The results of numerical calculations for each problems are represented as the correction factors F($\lamda$, $\alpha$, $\beta$). The results clearly show the following characteristics : The correction factors of the combined mode stress intensity factors for a non-uniform thickness material can be defined in the form of F($\lamda$, $\alpha$, $\beta$). The stress intensity factor values for a given crack length are decreased with increase of thickness ratio $\beta$.

It has been reported that cracks at mechanical fastener holes usually nucleate as elliptical corner cracks at the faying surface of the mechanical joints and grow as elliptical arc through cracks after penetrating the opposite surface. The weight function method is an efficient technique to calculate the stress intensity factors fur elliptical cracks using uncracked stress field. In this study the weight function method for three dimensional mixed-mode problem applied to elliptical comer cracks Is modified for elliptical arc through cracks and the stress intensity factors at two surface points of elliptical arc through cracks at mechanical fastener holes are analyzed by the weight function method. This study consists of two parts and in part I , the weight function method for elliptical arc through cracks is developed and verified.

Recently, demand for the experimental analysis of crack, such as arbitrary or distributed ones which has been considered quite difficult to investigate by the theoretical and numerical method, is increasing. Among existent experimental methods applied to the analysis of stress intensity factors, the slab analogy method have the following merits; cracks can be replaced by similarity-shaped rigid body, and the distribution of stress is represented by slab curvature of duly bent specimen. For the accuracy improvement of this method, multi-point selection method was introduced and its accuracy proved by applying this method to the analysis of centrally linear and inclined cracks in a finite plate which are theoretically known. In this paper, moreover, the stress intensity factors of eccentric and skew-symmetric bent cracks were determined by multi-point selection method and newly developed moire tilted master grating method. The results obtained by this method showed good agreement with the reliably theoretical solutions.
This study investigates a relationship between fracture mechanics parameters (Stress Intensity Factor Range: ΔK, Maximum Stress Intensity Factor; Kmax) and X-ray parameters (residual stress:$\sigma$r half-value breadth: B) for SG365 steel at elevated temperature up to 30$0^{\circ}C$. The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique according to the direction of crack length was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The residual stress on the fracture surface was found to increase at low ΔK region, to reach a maximum value at a certain value of Kmax or ΔK and then to decrease. Residual stress was independent of stress ratio by arrangement of ΔK and half value breadth were independent of the arrangement of Kmax. The equation of $\sigma$r-ΔK was established by the experimental data. therefore, fracture mechanics parameters could be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.
In this study, the analysis technique of fracture stress using the reflection coefficient of SAW reflected from a brittle solid with surface crack has been studied. Fracture stress of brittle solid with surface crack has been obtained by the function of the critical stress intensity factor and the maximum normalized stress intensity factor of the crack in the body. And the maximum normalized stress intensity factor of a surface crack can be inferred from a measurement of reflection coefficient of SAW. In experiment, the surface cracks ranging from 0.5mm to 0.9mm in crack depth has been made at the center of each Pyrex disc, and the SAW wedge transducer has been set up for the pitch-catch mode. It has been compared the theoretical values of the fracture stress calculated from the reflection coefficient of SAW with the values of the fracture stress measured from UTM.

According as the members and inner and outer plates of the automobile body structure have been thinned their thickness and have become high strength, each part of the body structure has been put more severe stress condition. Therefore, it has been increasingly required to improve the fatigue strength of the spot welded structures. As one of the improving methods for such problem, the author had previously proposed the method of alleviating stress concentration at nugget edge of the spot weld part and improving its fatigue strength [1]. But, because fatigue strength of the spot welded lap joint is influenced by its geometrical and mechanical factors, welding condition and etc., there needs a quantitative and systematic estimation method of them. In this report, by considering nugget edge of the spot weld part of the spot welded lap joint subjected to tensile load to the ligament crack, fatigue strength of various spot welded lap joints was estimated with the stress intensity factor (S.I.F.) K which is fracture mechanical parameter. It is known that evaluation of fatigue strength of the spot welded lap joint by the stress intensity factor (S.I.F.) K is more effective than the maximum stress $(\sigma_{ymax}$) at edge of the spot weld part on the center line of width of the plate.
The interaction between cracks and stress wave due to impact and explosive loads is numerically calculated in the study. The interaction and the effects of stress wave are numerically examined with the application of Bicharacteristic Method. This method has been used with confidence for its reliability in reproducing the realistic and physical wave pattern in the complete solution domain. The dynamic stress intensity factor, K/sub I/(t) for cracks under impact loads are numerically simulated and its results are compared favorably with Kalthoff's experimental output. Also the influence of stress wave to the dynamic stress intensity factor for the case of two symmetric holes around cracks are investigated. The results of study are also compared favorably with the experiment and proven to be applied to the structures exposed to impact and explosive loads.
