  • Human dentition is unique to individuals and helps in identification of individuals in forensic odontology. This study proposes to study the manually ground sections of single rooted teeth using digital methods for dental age estimation. To assess the dentinal translucency from the scanned digital images of manually ground section of teeth using commercially available image edition software. Corroborating the root dentinal translucency length and region of interest (ROI) of translucency zone in pixels (as a marker of dental age) with the chronological age of the subject, as stratified by different age groups. Twenty single-rooted extracted teeth from 20 patients each from 6 groups divided as per age. Manual sectioning of the teeth followed by scanning the sections was done. Root area in pixels and ROI of translucency zone were measured. From the observed values, translucency length percentage (TLP) and percentage of ROI in pixels (TPP) was calculated and tabulated. Pearson's correlation coefficients were obtained for age with TLP and TPP. Positive correlation existed between age and TLP and also between age and TPP. With the obtained data, multilinear regression equations for specific age groups based on 10-year intervals were derived. By a step-down analysis method, age was estimated with an average error of around ±7.9 years. This study gives a novel method for age-estimation that can be applied in real-time forensic sciences.

  • Characgcteristics of nocturnal boundary layer(NBL) were analyzed by the upper-air observations data using with the airsonde and pilot balloons from 1994 to 1999 in Kyungpook province. The automate weather boundary layer can become stably stratified when the surface is cooler than the air. Stable nocturnal boundary layer height were estimated from the top of surface stable layer where the vertical gradient of temperature and mixing ratio tend to zero or negative. The depth of the stable nocturnal boundary layer depended largely on the thermal effect rather than the wind effect at nighttime. The NBL was more developed on the land than on the coastal region. The stability index (bulk Richardson number) showed that the NBL was stable when the wind was weak and the vertical gradient of the temperature was strong. The heat budget in the NBL was studied by considering the effect of the radiative and the cooled by both the longwave radiative flux and the divergence of the heat flux, while NBL under the cloudy sky the longwave radiative flux played a role of the warming. It was noted that the heat was not conserved in both cases. To complete the heat budget in the NBL the warming/cooling by advection and subsidence must be considered.

  • Objectives This study was aimed to examine cold hypersensitivity tendency in the hands, feet and abdomen according to Sasang constitution among Koreans. Methods Multi stage stratified sampling was conducted for random selection of 1,100 participants aged ${\geq}19years$, based on sex, age, region in Oct.2010. Cold hypersensitivity was measured using a questionnaire to score the extent of cold hypersensitivity in the hands, feet, abdomen. Subjects' constitution was diagnosed by Korea Sasang Constitutional Diagnostic Questionnaire (KS-15). The cold hypersensitivity scores according to Sasang constitution were analyzed using logistic regression and one way ANOVA. Results On the one way ANOVA, Soeumin group's cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet scores were significantly higher than those of Taeeumin and Soyangin groups. However, there was no significant difference in the abdominal cold hypersensitivity scores by constitution. The regression analysis, adjusted for age, sex, and sociodemographic variables, showed that Soeumin group had significantly higher cold hypersensitivity effects of the hands (${\beta}=0.105$, p = 0.002) and feet (${\beta}=0.099$, p = 0.003) than Taeeumin group. Conclusions Soeumin group significantly had higher cold hypersensitivity scores in the hands and feet than Taeumin and Soyangin group.

  • Quantitative information on biomass and available nutrients are essential for developing sustainable forest management strategies to regulate atmospheric carbon. An attempt was made at Chilapatta Reserve Forest in Duars region of West Bengal to quantify its above and below ground carbon along with available "N", "P" and "K" in the soil. Stratified random nested quadrats were marked for soil, biomass and litter sampling. Indirect or non-destructive procedures were employed for biomass estimation. The amount of these available nutrients and organic carbon quantified in soil indicates that the forest soil is high in organic carbon and available "K" and medium in phosphorus and nitrogen. The biomass, soil carbon and total carbon (soil C+C in plant biomass) in the forest was 1,995.98, 75.83 and $973.65Mg\;ha^{-1}$. More than 90% of the carbon accumulated in the forest was contributed by the trees. The annual litter production of the forest was $5.37Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Carbon accumulation is intricately linked with site quality factors. The estimated biomass of $1,995.98Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ clearly indicates this. The site quality factor i.e. tropical moist deciduous with optimum availability of soil nutrients, heavy precipitation, high mean monthly relative humidity and optimum temperature range supported luxuriant growth which was realized as higher biomass accumulation and hence higher carbon accumulated.

  • A new method is proposed to identify two-phase flow regimes in horizontal gas-liquid flow, based upon a statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drop curves at an orifice. The probability density functions of the curves indicate distinct patterns depending upon the two-phase flow regime. The transition region also could be identified by the distribution shape of the probability density function. The statistical properties of the pressure drop are analyzed for various flow regimes and transitions. Finally, the data of flow patterns determined by the proposed method are compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators.

  • Bronchogenic cysts, though known as a relatively common malformation of the mediastinum, were rarely discussed in Korean literatures. Since the surgical removal of asymptomatic lesions was adopted as the reasonable therapeutic principle, the incidence of bronchogenic cysts were found to be higher than previously expected. Two cases of bronchogenic cysts operated on in The Dept. of Thoracic Surgery, Korea University Woo Sok Hospital were reported and related literatures were reviewed. Case 1. 5 year old boy with chief complaints of bulging cystic mass on left supraclavicular region during straining or coughing since his age of 2 was admitted, and cystogram with Lipiodol revealed hen-egg sized mass in the left antero-superior mediastinum without any communication with bronchus or esophagus. Cyst was successfully removed under general anesthesia thru left supraclavicular incision, and pathological examination of the cyst revealed thin cystic wall lined with stratified columnar epithelium and it`s content was milky white mucoid fluid devoid of any bacterial growth. Case 2. 15 year old school girl has been noted slowly growing walnut-sized mass on anterolateral side of the neck for 4 months without any subjective symptom except cosmetic problem... Mass was aspirated to find milky white mucoid fluid in some loculation and yellowish turbid fluid in other part due to chronic infection. Cystic tumor was removed under local anesthesia, which was loculated in between the trachea and esophagus without any communication, and pathological diagnosis of the cyst was bronchogenic cyst with columnar epithelial cell lining with moderate chronic inflammatory cell infiltrations. Postoperative conditions of the two cases were all excellent with normal life.

  • In order to investigate seasonal variations of the physical environments in the region of Jinhae Bay-Nakdongpo, we carried out hydrographic surveys from November 2000 to November 2001. Horizontal and vertical distribution of salinity and temperature shows large seasonal variations. Water column is well mixed in winter and stratified in summer. Low-salinity water is distributed in the form of patches because of the drainage control at the Nakdong River. Seasonal variations in the sea near Gadeok-Sudo are affected by topography, river discharge and tidal current. Currents have been measured using a bottom mounted ADCP and DCM12 between November 2000 and August 2001 in the Gadeok-Sudo. The current in the Gadeok-Sudo shows a distinct two-layer structure with reversed current. Low-pass filtered time series of wind, sea elevation and current are coherent for the period of 1-2 days and are attributed to Ekman-like dynamics. Spatial and temporal circulation pattern shows a slight different. The subtidal current in Jinhae Bay goes northward, however is reversed in the Gadeok-Sudo mouth.

  • Off the southwest coast of Korea, changes in hydrographic fields from stratified state of summer to a vertically homogeneous one of winter appeared to occur most actively in November. During this transitional period coincident thermal and salinity fronts are formed along the boundary between the two water masses of cold coastal water with low salinity and of the Tsushima Current Water. Generally frontal zone lies where the bottom depth is about 70-90m except for the central region of the Cheju Strait in which the influence of the Tsushima Current is weak. Result of the drift bottle experiment in November 1930 supports the existence of the westward coastal current.
