This paper focuses on the formulation and validation of an automatic strategy for the selection of the locations and directions of strain gauges to capture at best the modal response of a blade in a series of modes. These locations and directions are selected to render the strain measurements as robust as possible with respect to random mispositioning of the gauges and gauge failures. The approach relies on the evaluation of the signal-to-noise ratios of the gauge measurements from finite element strain data and includes the effects of gauge size. A genetic algorithm is used to find the strain gauge locations-directions that lead to the largest possible value of the smallest modal strain signal-to-noise ratio, in the absence of gauge failure, or of its expected value when gauge failure is possible. A fan blade is used to exemplify the applicability of the proposed methodology and to demonstrate the effects of the essential parameters of the problem, i.e. the mispositioning level, the probability of gauge failure, and the number of gauges.

In this paper, the embedding type novel liquid metal strain gauge was developed for measuring the deformation of wind turbine blades. In general, the conventional methods for the SHM have many disadvantages such as frequency distortion in FBG sensors, the low gauge factor and mechanical failures in strain gauges and extremely sophisticated filtering in AE sensors. However, the liquid metal filled in a pre-confined micro channel shows dramatic characteristics such as high sensitivity, flexibility and robustnes! s to environment. To adopt such a high feasibility of the liquid metal in flexible sensor applications, the EGaIn was introduced to make flexible liquid metal strain gauges for the SHM. A micro channeled flexible film fabricated by the several MEMS processes and the PDMS replication was filled with EGaIn and wire-connected. Lots of experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of the developed strain gauges and verify the feasibility to the actual wind turbine blades health monitoring.

For monitoring of the civil and building structure, optical fiber sensors are very convenient. The fiber sensors are very small and do not disturb the structural properties. They also have several merits such as electro-magnetic immunity, long signal transmission, good accuracy and multiplicity of one sensor line. Strain measurement technologies with fiber optic sensors have been investigated as a part of smart structure. In this paper, we investigated the possibilities of fiber optic sensor application to the monitoring of beam-column joints of structures. We expect that the fiber optic sensors replace electrical strain gauges. The commercial electric strain gauges show good stability und dominate tile strain measurement market. However, they lack durability and long term stability for continuous monitoring of the structures. In order to apply the strain gauges, we only have to attach them to the surfaces of the structures. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using fiber optic Bragg grating sensors to joint structure. The sensors show nice response to the structural behavior of the joint.

Recent construction method in mass concrete structures would depend on the control of hydration heats and thermal stresses by using the low heat cement, optimized block size and a lift height, or both. This experimental study aims at the possibility of thermal cracks according to the different types of cementations material and at the investigation of these effects. Four different types of cements are applied to the mock-up test and are evaluated in terms of temperature rises and thermal stresses with the use of thermocouples, strain gauges and effective stress gauges. As a result of this study, it was found that stresses measured from effective stress gauges agree well with ones form strain gauges, and the trend of stress occurrence can be well evaluated from theoretical analysis.

This paper presents the basic characteristics of thin-film strain gauges using Cr thin-films, in which the Cr thin-films were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering. The optimized deposition conditions as a strain gauge were the input DC power was 7 W/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and the Ar vacuuming pressure was 9 mTorr. The characteristics of fabricated Cr thin-film strain gauge were the gauge factor(GF) was 5.86 in longitudinal strain and -2.04 in transverse one, the TCR was under 400 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and the TCS was around 0 ppm/$^{\circ}C$.

Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) using the Model 95 Ar laserm, a video system and an image processor was applied to the in-plane displacement measurements. Unlike traditional strain gauges or moire method, ESPI method requires no special surface preparation or attachments and can be measured in-plane displacement with no contact and real time. In this experiment wpecimen was loaded in parallel with a loadcell. The specimen was the cold rolled sdteel sheet of 2mm thickness, which was attached strain gauges. The study provides an example of how ESPI have been used to measure strain displacement in this specimen. The results measured by ESPI have been used to measure strain displacement in this specimen. The results measured by ESPI have been used to measure strain displacement in this specimen. The results measured by ESPI compare with the data which was measured by strain gauge method in tensile testing.

Longitudinal strains({$varepsilon}_x$) of the core and skin layers in glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) cross-ply composite laminates have been studied using the embedded optical fiber sensor of totally-reflected extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer(TR-EFPI). Foil-type strain gauges bonded on both the upper and lower surfaces were used for the measurement of the surface strains. Both TR-EFPI sensor and strain gauge bonded on the specimen surface showed excellent agreement within -0.0086 ~ +0.0302% strain. It was shown that values of {$varepsilon}_x$ in the interior of the surface layer and the core layer measured by embedded TR-EFPI sensor was significantly higher than that of the specimen surface measured by strain gauges. The experimental results were ascertained with finite element analysis. Embedded TR-EFPI optical fiber sensor could measure accurately the internal strains which were different from the surface.

A strain gauge weight measuring instrumentation system was designed with RF sensor network facilities. In the sensor module system data conversion and a series of signal processing were totally equipped. 16 strain gauges are incoming sensors and each output of the strain gauge was amplified and filtered for proper analog signal processing. Several measuring instrumentation OP amps and general purposed OP amps were used. 12 bits A/D converters converted analog signals to digital bits and a PIC microprocessor controlled the 16 channels of strain gauges. RF RS232 modules were used for wireless communication between the PIC microprocessor and an Ethernet host far a remote sensor monitoring system development.

This paper presents characteristics of CrN thin-film strain gauges, which were deposited on glass by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere(Ar-$(5{\sim}25%)N_2$). The physical and electrical characteristics of these films investigated with the thickness range $3500{\AA}$ of CrN thin films, annealing temperature $(100{\sim}300^{\circ}C)$ and annealing $(24{\sim}72hr)$. The optimized condition of CrN thin-film strain gauges were thickness range of $3500{\AA}$ and annealing condition($300^{\circ}C$, 48 hr) in Ar-10 %$N_2$ deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the CrN thin-films for strain gauge is obtained a high resistivity, ${\rho}=1147.65{\mu}{\Omega}cm$, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=$-186ppm/^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal, 11.17. And change in resistance after annealing for the CrN thin-films were quitely linear and stable.
