  • An experimental study was carried out in the laboratory on a model of a reinforced earth retaining wall to provide the empirical data for the rational design and the construction methods on a reinforced earth retaining wall. Observed measurements included the variation of tension in the aluminium foil reinforcing strips was monitored by electrical resistance strain gauges pasted on its at different stages of construction. In addition, the lateral movement of the wall was measured by dial gauges and the mode of collapse of the wall was investigated. The measured values are discussed in comparison with the results of the existing studies of the reinforced earth retaining wall. A significant result of the experiments is that the variation of tension in reinforcing strips is non-linear with the maximum tension occuring close to wall face. Attachment of reinforcement to wall increases the stability against overturning.

  • In this paper, the application of finite element method to design the shape of load cell as an illustrative case study is described. The relationship between the various shapes of load cell and their stress characteristic were analyzed by COSMOS simulation program. The results obtained from the proposed analysis can be applied to determine the appropriate position of strain gauges for good quality load cell. The experimental results show the good efficiency of the proposed technique.

  • In this study, the change of concrete temperature, strain and thermal stress were measured by using the embedded type concrete gauges in tendon gallery wall of containment building. A finite element analysis was performed to clarify the thermal behavior of concrete. The analytic and test results were investigated to improve the validity of analytic method. According to the test results, concrete temperature, strain and thermal stress were strongly affected by measuring point and environment condition of member. And the thermal stress was developed in the member which was not demoulded at early ages. This is caused by the change of internal temperature and restrained condition. A finite element effectively interpreted the test results by estimating the concrete properties and the site condition.

  • The results of tests conducted on 11 concrete-filled steel tubular columns were reported. Concrete was partially filled in circular steel tubular columns. The primary test parameters were radius and thickness of steel tubes, concrete height, loading patterns and attachment of diaphragm and studs. Concrete strain was measured directly by embedding strain gauges so that the effect of diaphragm on concrete confinement could be investigated. The effects of concrete height and diaphragm on ultimate strength and ductility of steel tubes were investigated. The comparisons of the test results with the existing results for rectangular cross-sections were made on the basis of ultimate strength and ductility of concrete-filled steel tubular columns.

  • This Paper contains the development procedure of Mach small-scaled composite rotor blade for helicopter articulated rotor system. This mach small-scaled composite blade design is conducted by using CORDAS program developed by KARI. The Dynamic analysis for an articulated rotor system with this blade is conducted by using FLIGHTLAB which is commercial software for helicopter analysis. Also the optimizing procedure of iterative design was described. The designed composite blades were manufactured after establishing the effective curing method. For small-scaled rotor test, strain gauges were embedded in composite blade spar to obtain bending & torsion strain value. To verify sectional properties of a blade, the bench test is accomplished. After comparing a designed data and tested data, Dynamic Calculation was repeated using tested data. Through this research, experiences of mach small-scaled composite blade development were accumulated and will be applied to the related research field.

  • To develop design and evaluation technologies of automotive seat frames, structural analysis and fatigue tests have been performed. Under the back moment loading condition, the numerical simulation yielded the maximum stress over the yield strength at the side frame bracket. To measure the stresses under the test condition, strain gauges were attached on some weakest points of the side frames. the measured strains are in good agreements with the CAE results. On the other hand, fatigue tests have been performed using the side frame bracket specimens made of various welding types to estimate their durabilities. From the fatigue test results and the analysis ones, it was recommended that the welding position of the bracket should be moved upward.

  • Test facilities for the wind turbine performance monitoring and mechanical load measurements are installed in Vestas 100 kW wind turbine in Wollyong test site, Jeju island. The monitoring system consists of Garrad-Hassan T-MON system, telemetry system for blade load measurement, various sensors such as anemometer, wind vane, strain gauge, power meter, and etc. The experimental procedure for the measurement of wind turbine loads, such as edgewise(lead-lag) bending moment, flapwise bending moment, and tower base bending moment, has been established. Strain gauges are on-site calibrated against load cell prior to monitoring the wind turbine loads. Using the established monitoring system, the wind turbine is remotely monitored. From the measured load data, the load analysis has been performed to obtain the load power spectral density and the fatigue load spectra of the wind turbine.

  • The posttensioning system of nuclear containment have to be verified its structural integrity by the periodic inspection because the structural behavior of the containment is changed by the variation of the physical property of concrete and tendon as time passes. In this study a program 'SAPONC-CANDU' which is able to monitor and analysis the micro structural behavior of the domestic CANDU type containment at all times was developed. The readings of vibrating-wire strain gauges embedded into the concrete of containment were used as input data for operating the program. This program provides the long-term prediction values and bands of the concrete strain due to the time dependent factors of the concrete and tendon of the domestic CANDU type containment.

  • In this study a program 'SAPONC-FRANCE' which is able to evaluate and analysis the elastic behavior property of the domestic FRANCE type containment under pressurization and depressurization in periodic structural integrity test (SIT) was developed. The readings of EAU system that is composed of the pendulum, invar-wire, leveling-pot, bench-mark, thermocouples and acoustic strain gauges were used as input data for operating the program. This program provides the prediction lines and bands of the pressure-strain(or displacement) relationship of concrete due to the changing of inner volume under pressurization and depressurization in SIT of the domestic FRANCE type containment.
