The cause of corrosion failure found in structures or various components operating in severe corrosive environments has been attributed to stress corrosion cracking(SCC)which is resulting from the combined effects of corrosive environments and static tensile stress. Slow strain rate test (SSRT) provides a rapid reliable method to determine SCC susceptibility of metals and alloys for a broad range of application. The chief advantage of SSRT procedures is that it is much more aggressive in producing SCC than conventional constant strain or constant load tests, so that the testing time is considerably reduced. Therefore, in this paper, the combined effects of material properties and strain rate on the tensile ductility and fracture morphology of parents and weldment for SM45C, SCM440 and SM20C steels were examined and discussed in synthetic sea water. The susceptibility of SCC was the most severe under the strain rate of $1.0{\times}10^{-6} sec^{-1}$, and R.O.A. can be used for parent and maximum load for weldment to evaluate the parameter for SCC susceptibility.

This paper focuses on the formulation and validation of an automatic strategy for the selection of the locations and directions of strain gauges to capture at best the modal response of a blade in a series of modes. These locations and directions are selected to render the strain measurements as robust as possible with respect to random mispositioning of the gauges and gauge failures. The approach relies on the evaluation of the signal-to-noise ratios of the gauge measurements from finite element strain data and includes the effects of gauge size. A genetic algorithm is used to find the strain gauge locations-directions that lead to the largest possible value of the smallest modal strain signal-to-noise ratio, in the absence of gauge failure, or of its expected value when gauge failure is possible. A fan blade is used to exemplify the applicability of the proposed methodology and to demonstrate the effects of the essential parameters of the problem, i.e. the mispositioning level, the probability of gauge failure, and the number of gauges.
The inelastic behavior of a reinforced concrete columns is influenced by a number of factors : 1) level of axial load, 2) tie spacing, 3) volumetric ratio of lateral steel, 4) concrete strength, 5) distribution of longitudinal steel, 6) strength of lateral steel, 7) cover thickness, 8) configuration of lateral steel, 9) strain gradient, 10) strain rate, 11) the effectively confined concrete core area, and 12) amount of longitudinal steel. A new constitutive model of a confined concrete is suggested in order to investigate the nonlinear behavior of the reinforced concrete columns under concentric loading. The developed constitutive model for the confined concrete takes into account the effects of effectively confined area as well as the horizontal and longitudinal distributions of the confining pressures. None of the existing models incorporated these two main effects at the same time. A total of different six constitutive models for the behavior of the confined concrete under concentric compression were compared with the sixty-one test results reported by different researchers. The superiority of the developed model in its accuracy is demonstrated by evaluating the error function, which compares the weighted averages for the sum of squared relative differences in peak compressive strength and corresponding strain, stress at strain equal to 0.015, and total area under stress-strain curve up to strain equal to 0.015.
This paper investigates the size dependent effect on the vibration analysis of a porous nanocomposite viscoelastic plate reinforced by functionally graded-single walled carbon nanotubes (FG-SWCNTs) by considering nonlocal strain gradient theory. Therefore, using energy method and Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion are derived. In this article, the effects of nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio, strain gradient parameter, volume fraction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), damping coefficient, porosity coefficient, and temperature change on the natural frequency are perused. The innovation of this paper is to compare the effectiveness of each mentioned parameters individually on the free vibrations of this plate and to represent the appropriate value for each parameter to achieve an ideal nanocomposite plate that minimizes vibration. The results are verified with those referenced in the paper. The results illustrate that the effect of damping coefficient on the increase of natural frequency is significantly higher than the other parameters effect, and the effects of the strain gradient parameter and nonlocal parameter on the natural frequency increase are less than damping coefficient effect, respectively. Furthermore, the results indicate that the natural frequency decreases with a rise in the nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio and temperature change. Also, the natural frequency increases with a rise in the strain gradient parameter and CNTs volume fraction. This study can be used for optimizing the industrial and medical designs, such as automotive industry, aerospace engineering and water purification system, by considering ideal properties for the nanocomposite plate.
Hopkinson's effect tests were carried out for various strain rates on three different types of rock in both saturated and dry states in order to examine the effects of strain rate and water saturation on tensile strength. The tensile strength increased with the increase of the strain rate not only in dry state but also in saturated state. It was also especially recognizable that the dynamic tensile strength of rock in the dry state was proportional to approximately a one-third multiple of strain rate no matter what the type of rock. It was found that water saturation decreased tensile strength in the dry state of sandstone and tuff, both with high porosity, but no significant difference could be recognized between the dry and the saturated states of granite, which has a low porosity of 0.49%.

This study evaluated the effects of milk fermented with Pediococcus acidilactici strain BE and Pediococcus pentosaceus strain M103 on diabetes in rats (Rattus norvegicus). The bacteria were separately used as starter cultures for milk fermentation, and the products were then fed to diabetic rats for 15 days. Blood glucose levels, immunohistochemical and histological indicators, lipid profiles, and total lactic acid bacterium counts were evaluated before and after treatment. The administration of milk fermented with P. acidilactici strain BE reduced blood glucose levels from 410.27±51.60 to 304.07±9.88 mg/dL (p<0.05), similar to the effects of metformin (from 382.30±13.39 mg/dL to 253.33±40.66 mg/dL, p<0.05). Increased insulin production was observed in diabetic rats fed milk fermented with P. acidilactici strain BE concomitant with an increased number and percentage area of immunoreactive beta-cells. The structure of insulin-producing beta-cells was improved in diabetic rats fed milk fermented with P. acidilactici strain BE or metformin (insulin receptor substrate scores of 5.33±0.94 and 3.5±0.5, respectively). This suggests that the administration of milk fermented with P. acidilactici BE potentially reduces blood glucose levels and improves pancreatic beta-cell function in diabetic rats.

In this paper, smooth and notched bar tensile tests of austenitic stainless steel 304 are performed, covering four different multi-axial stress states and six different strain rate conditions, to investigate the effect of the stress triaxiality and strain rate on fracture strain. Test data show that the measured true fracture strain tends to decrease with increasing stress triaxiality and strain rate. The test data are then quantified using the Johnson-Cook (J-C) fracture strain model incorporating combined effects of the stress triaxiality and strain rate. The determined J-C model can predict true fracture strain overall conservatively with the difference less than 20%. The conservatism in the strain-based acceptance criteria in ASME B&PV Code, Section III, Appendix FF is also discussed.
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of stocking density and strain on the performance and physiological adaptive responses including the plasma corticosterone content and the level of mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and antioxidant enzymes in broiler chicks. A total of 300 birds of two strains (150 Ross strain vs. 150 Cobb strain) aged 3-d old were allotted into two stocking densities (standard stocking density,$0.046m^2/bird$ vs. high stocking density, $0.023m^2/bird$) in battery cages by $2{\times}2$ factorial designs with ten replicates until 35 d of age. There was no significant strain effect on body weight, feed intakes and feed to gain ratio and the relative organ weights. However body weight, feed intakes and relative organ weight were found to be significantly (P<0.05) affected by the effect of stocking density. Plasma corticosterone level was not affected by both stocking density and strain effects. Hepatic mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-$1{\beta}$ (IL-$1{\beta}$), IL-6, IL-18 and interferon-gamma (IFN-${\gamma}$) was not significantly changed by the effects of strain and stocking density. However, the mRNA expression of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) was affected by strain, showing that Ross strain decreased (P<0.05) the GPX expression. With respect to the effect of stocking density, there was a significant (P<0.05) increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and GPX mRNA expression in the liver from high stocking density group. Splenic pro-inflammatory cytokine expression was not also affected by stocking density and strain, except that IL-18 mRNA significantly (P<0.05) decreased in Cobb strain under high stocking density. The mRNA expression of SOD and CAT was significantly (P<0.05) affected by the effects of stocking density and strain. In conclusion, growth performance was not affected by strain but stocking density. Although mRNA expression of major pro-inflammatory cytokines was not changed by stocking density and strain, antioxidant enzyme was significantly affected by stocking density, strain or even organ in birds under summer conditions. More detailed studies still needed to be explored to elucidate the effects of environmental conditions and genetic background on physiological responses in birds.

As shear localization is observed in different deformation modes, an attempt is made to understand the conditions for shear localization in general deformation modes. Most emphasis in put upon the effects of pre-localization deformation mode on the onset of shear localization and all the other well-recognized effects of subtle constitutive features and imperfection sensitivity studied elsewhere are not investigated here. Rather, an approximate perturbation stability analysis is performed for simplified isotropic rigid-plastic solids subjected to general mode of homogeneous deformation. Shear localization is possible in any deformation mode if the material has strain softening. The incipient rate of shear localization and shear plane orientations are strongly dependent upon the pre-localization deformation mode. Significant strain softening is necessary for shear localization in homogeneous axisymmetric deformation modes while infinitesimal strain softening is necessary for shear localization in plane strain deformation mode. In any deformation mode, there are more than one shear plane orientation. Except for homogeneous axisymmetric deformation modes, there are two possible shear plane orientations with respect to the principal directions of stretching. Some well-known examples are discussed in the light of the current analysis.
It is well known that the properties of the soil deposits, especially the damping, depend on both frequency and strain amplitude. Therefore it is important to consider both dependencies to calculate the soil response against earthquakes in order to estimate input motions to buildings. However, it has been difficult to calculate the seismic response of the soil considering both dependencies directly. The author has studied the time domain evaluation of the frequency dependent dynamic stiffness, and proposed a simple hysteretic damping model that satisfies the causality condition. In this paper, this model was applied to nonlinear analyses considering the effects of the strain amplitude dependency of the soil. The basic characteristics of the proposed method were studied using a two layered soil model. The response behavior was compared with the conventional model e.g. the Ramberg-Osgood model and the SHAKE model. The characteristics of the proposed model were studied with regard to the effects of element divisions and the frequency dependency that is a key feature of the model. The efficiency of the model was confirmed by these studies.
