Analytical wave dispersion modeling in advanced piezoelectric double-layered nanobeam systems

  • This research deals with the wave dispersion analysis of functionally graded double-layered nanobeam systems (FG-DNBSs) considering the piezoelectric effect based on nonlocal strain gradient theory. The nanobeam is modeled via Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Material properties are considered to change gradually along the nanobeams' thickness on the basis of the rule of mixture. By implementing a Hamiltonian approach, the Euler-Lagrange equations of piezoelectric FG-DNBSs are obtained. Furthermore, applying an analytical solution, the dispersion relations of smart FG-DNBSs are derived by solving an eigenvalue problem. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality, length scale parameter, interlayer stiffness, applied electric voltage, relative motions and gradient index on the wave dispersion characteristics of nanoscale beam have been investigated. Also, validity of reported results is proven in the framework of a diagram showing the convergence of this model's curve with that of a previous published attempt.

  • The problem of dynamic analysis of truss structures based on probability is studied in this paper. Considering the randomness of both physical parameters (elastic module and mass density) of structural materials and geometric dimension of bars respectively or simultaneously, the stiffness and mass matrixes of the elements and structure have been built. The structure dynamic characteristic based on probability is analyzed, and the expressions of numeral characteristics of inherence frequency random variable are derived from the Rayleigh's quotient. The method of structural dynamic analysis based on probability is developed. Finally, two examples are given.

Transition membrane elements with drilling freedom for local mesh refinements

  • A transition membrane element designated as CLM which has variable mid-side nodes with drilling freedoms has been presented in this paper. The functional for the linear problem, in which the drilling rotations are introduced as independent variables, has been formulated. The transition elements with variable side nodes can be efficiently used in the local mesh refinement for the in-plane structures, which have stress concentrations. A modified Gaussian quadrature is needed to be adopted to evaluate the stiffness matrices of these transition elements mainly due to the slope discontinuity of displacement within the elements. Detailed numerical studies show the excellent performance of the new transition elements developed in this study.

  • In this paper, an asymptotic method is employed to formulate nano- or micro-beams based on strain gradient elasticity. Although a basic theory for the strain gradient elasticity has been well established in literature, a systematic approach is relatively rare because of its complexity and ambiguity of higher-order elasticity coefficients. In order to systematically identify the strain gradient effect, an asymptotic approach is adopted by introducing the small parameter which represents the beam geometric slenderness and/or the internal atomistic characteristic. The approach allows us to systematically split the two-dimensional strain gradient elasticity into the microscopic one-dimensional through-the-thickness analysis and the macroscopic one-dimensional beam analysis. The first-order beam problem turns out to be different from the classical elasticity in terms of the bending stiffness, which comes from the through-the-thickness strain gradient effect. This subsequently affects the second-order transverse shear stress in which the surface shear stress exists. It is demonstrated that a careful derivation of a first strain gradient elasticity embraces "Gurtin-Murdoch traction" as the surface effect of a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli-like beam model.

  • High speed railway challenge the design, construction and maintaining of traditional railway, many traditional design concepts have been changed. Transition of railway and bridge has two main problems. one is that different lines have different ability of resisting distortion in area of trial load, which was known that problem of smooth transition of stiffness, the other is that differential settlement between artificial structure and earth structure cause bending of railway. The two problems have effect on train moving. The principle of processing transition of railway and bridge is same in world, but it is difficult to find relationship between design standard of transition, vehicle performance, line standard, design speed and so on form documentation and data reports. Based on mechanics, the paper analyzed dynamic performance of transition of high speed railway, studied various rough elements which is effective to train moving, built mathematical model of interaction of train and transition of high speed railway and developed numerical simulation software. In various different work conditions, we did great quantity of numerical simulation, comprehensive analysis and performance analysis.

  • Trouble by excessive axial stress in CWR layed on a bridge is frequently happen, and this problem is induced from lack of considering on the track/structure interface on preliminary design stage. In this study, the sensitivity evaluation for the major influencing parameters, that is, expansion length of span, stiffness of super structure, arrangement of bearing, and strength of sub-structure, to the axial force in CWR on a bridge is conducted. From the sensitivity study, the guideline to reduce axial force efficiently in CWR for bridge engineer was suggested. The suggested guideline may not applicable for every case, but it is helpful for preliminary design of bridge.

Hysteresis modeling for cyclic behavior of concrete-steel composite joints using modified CSO

  • Concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) column joints with composite beams have been widely used as lateral loading resisting elements in civil infrastructure. To better utilize these innovative joints for the application of structural seismic design and analysis, it is of great importance to investigate the dynamic behavior of the joint under cyclic loading. With this aim in mind, a novel phenomenal model has been put forward in this paper, in which a Bouc-Wen hysteresis component is employed to portray the strength and stiffness deterioration phenomenon caused by increment of loading cycle. Then, a modified chicken swarm optimization algorithm was used to estimate the optimal model parameters via solving a global minimum optimization problem. Finally, the experimental data tested from five specimens subjected to cyclic loadings were used to validate the performance of the proposed model. The results effectively demonstrate that the proposed model is an easy and more realistic tool that can be used for the pre-design of CFST column joints with reduced beam section (RBS) composite beams.

Practical formula for determining peak acceleration of footbridge under walking considering human-structure interaction

  • In this paper, an analytical formulation is proposed to predict the vertical vibration response due to the pedestrian walking on a footbridge considering the human-structure interaction, where the footbridge and pedestrian are represented by the Euler beam and linear oscillator model, respectively. The derived coupled equation of motion is a nonlinear fourth-order partial differential equation. An uncoupled solution strategy based on the combined weighted residual and perturbation method) is proposed to reduce the tedious computation, which allows the separate integration between the bridge and pedestrian subsystems. The theoretical study demonstrates that the pedestrian subsystem can be treated as a structural system with added mass, damping, and stiffness. The analysis procedure is then applied to a case study under the conditions of single pedestrian and multi pedestrians, and the results are validated and compared numerically. For convenient vibration design of a footbridge, the simplified peak acceleration formula and the idea of decoupling problem are thus proposed.

  • During the structural design of urban over-track high-rise buildings, two problems are most likely encountered: the abrupt change of story stiffness between the podium and the upper towers, as well as the demand for train-induced vibration control. Traditional earthquake-resistant structures have to be particularly designed with transfer stories to meet the requirement of seismic control under earthquakes, and thus horizontal seismic isolation techniques are recommended to solve the transfer problem. The function of mitigating the vertical subway-induced vibration can be integrated into the isolation system including thick rubber bearings and 3D composite vibration control devices. Engineering project cases are presented in this paper for a more comprehensive understanding of the engineering practice and research frontiers of urban over-track high-rise buildings in China.

When should reverse total shoulder arthroplasty be considered in glenohumeral joint arthritis?

  • Anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has been used widely in treatment of glenohumeral osteoarthritis and provides excellent pain relief and functional results. Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) was created to treat the complex problem of rotator cuff tear arthropathy. RSA also has been performed for glenohumeral osteoarthritis even in cases where the rotator cuff is preserved and has shown good results comparable with TSA. The indications for RSA are expanding to include tumors of the proximal humerus, revision of hemiarthroplasty to RSA, and revision of failed TSA to RSA. The purposes of this article were to describe comprehensively the conditions under which RSA should be considered in glenohumeral osteoarthritis, to explain its theoretical background, and to review the literature.
