  • This paper describes a study of the influence of shield tunnel construction on the displacements and stresses induced in the linings of existing nearby parallel tunnels. The paper presents a brief review of a set of laboratory scale model research programme investigating the influence of tunnel proximity and alignment, liner stiffness on the nature of the interactions between closely spaced tunnels in clay. A total of two sets of carefully controlled physical model tests were performed. A cylindrical test tank was developed and used to produce clay samples of Speswhite kaolin. In each of the tests, three model tunnels were installed in order to conduct two interaction exts that have been carried out to investigate the interaction problem between parallel tunnels. The results of these tests are compared with the results of finite element analysis to investigate the techniques that must be used to obtain reliable numerical solutions to this type of problem.

  • Vibration and noise of gears is doc to the transmission error and the vibration exciting force caused by the periodically alternating tooth stiffness. Transmission error is the rotation delay between driving and driven gear caused by manufacturing error, alignment error in assembly and so on. Tooth stiffness changes with the proceeding mesh of teeth. The purpose of this study is to develop how to calculate simultaneously the optimum amounts of tooth profile modification. end relief and crowning by minimizing the vibration exciting force of helical gears. We estimate the vibration exciting force by the meshing analysis of gears. Formulated constraints of this problem consist of contact ratio and strengths of gear teeth such as tooth bending strength, surface durability, and scoring. ADS(Automated Design Synthesis) is used as an optimization tool. We also investigate the relation between the aspect ratio and the optimum values of tooth modification. The proposed method can calculate the optimum amount of tooth modification automatically and is expected to be practically useful to resolve the problem of vibration of helical gears.

  • The optimum grillage design belongs to nonlinear constrained optimization problem. The determination of beam scantlings for the grillage structure is a very crucial matter out of whole structural design process. The performance of optimization methods, based on penalty functions, is highly problem-dependent and many methods require additional tuning of some variables. This additional tuning is the influences of penalty coefficient, which depend strongly on the degree of constraint violation. Moreover, Binary-coded Genetic Algorithm (BGA) meets certain difficulties when dealing with continuous and/or discrete search spaces with large dimensions. With the above reasons, Real-coded Micro-Genetic Algorithm ($R{\mu}GA$) is proposed to find the optimum beam scantlings of the grillage structure without handling any of penalty functions. $R{\mu}GA$ can help in avoiding the premature convergence and search for global solution-spaces, because of its wide spread applicability, global perspective and inherent parallelism. Direct stiffness method is used as a numerical tool for the grillage analysis. In optimization study to find minimum weight, sensitivity study is carried out with varying beam configurations. From the simulation results, it has been concluded that the proposed $R{\mu}GA$ is an effective optimization tool for solving continuous and/or discrete nonlinear real-world optimization problems.

  • A simple nonlinear programming(NLP) formulation for the optimal topology problem of structures is developed and examined. The NLP formulation is general, and can handle arbitrary objective functions and arbitrary stress, displacement constraints under multiple loading conditions. The formulation is based on simultaneous analysis and design approach to avoid stiffness matrix singularity resulting from zero sizing variables. By embedding the equilibrium equations as equality constraints in the nonlinear programming problem, we avoid constructing and factoring a system stiffness matrix, and hence avoid its singularity. The examples demonstrate that the formulation is effective for finding an optimal solution, and shown to be robust under a variety of constraints.

  • The three-dimensional finite element modeling of a composite rotor blade is very hard and requires much computation effort. The efficient method to model a composite beam is necessary for the dynamic and aeroelastic analyses of rotor blades. In this study, the beam modeling method of a composite rotor blade is studied using VABS. The computer program, VABS (Variational Asymptotic Beam Section Analysis), uses the variational asymptotic method to split a 3-D nonlinear elasticity problem into 2-D cross-sectional analysis and 1-D nonlinear beam problem. The VABS can produce the sectional stiffness coefficients of composite rotor blades with various cross section and initial twist/curvatures, and recover the original 3-D distribution of displacement/strain/stress fields. The results of various cross section beams show that VABS gives us the accurate results comparared to commercial codes and does not need much computation effort. It can be concluded that VABS provides the efficient method to establish the FE model of a composite rotor blade.

  • For the finite element analysis of highly saturated rotating machines involving rotation of a rotor such as dynamic analysis. cogging torque analysis and etc, so much time is needed because a new system matrix equation should be solved for each iteration and time step. It is proved in this paper that. in linear systems. the computational time can be greatly reduced by using the domain decomposition method (DDM). In nonlinear systems. however. this advantage vanishes because the stiffness matrix changes at each iteration especially when using the Newton-Raphson (NR) method. The transmission line modeling (TLM) method resolves this problem because in TLM method the stiffness matrix does not change throughout the entire analysis. In this paper, a new technique for FEA of rotating machines including rotation of rotor and non-linearity is proposed. This method is applied to a test problem. and compared with the conventional method.

  • The structural system that discreterized from continuous shells is frequently used to make a large space structures. As well these structures show the unstable phenomena when a load level over the limit load, and snap-through and bifurcation are most well known of it. For the collapse mechanism, rise-span ratio, element stiffness and load mode are main factor, which it give an effect to unstable behavior. In our real situation, most structures have semi-rigid joint that has middle characteristic between pin and rigid joint. So the knowledge of semi-rigid joint is very important problem of stable large space structure. And the instability phenemena of framed space structures show a strong non-linearity and very sensitive behavior according to the joint rigidity For this reason In this study, we are investigating to unstable problem of framed structure with semi-rigidity and to grasp the nonlinear instability behavior that make the fundamental collapse mechanism of the large space frame structures with semi-rigid joint, by proposed the numerical analysis method. Using the incremental stiffness matrix in chapter 2, we study instability of space structures.

  • This work investigates the thermo-mechanical vibration frequencies of an embedded composite nano-beam restrained with elastic springs at both ends. Composite nanobeam consists of a matrix and short fibers as reinforcement elements placed inside the matrix. An approach based on Fourier sine series and Stokes' transform is adopted to present a general solution that can examine the elastic boundary conditions of the short-fiber-reinforced nanobeam considered with the Halpin-Tsai model. In addition to the elastic medium effect considered by the Winkler model, the size effect is also considered on the basis of nonlocal strain gradient theory. After creating an eigenvalue problem that includes all the mentioned parameters, this problem is solved to examine the effects of fiber and matrix properties, size parameters, Winkler stiffness and temperature change. The numerical results obtained at the end of the study show that increasing the rigidity of the Winkler foundation, the ratio of fiber length to diameter and the ratio of fiber Young's modulus to matrix Young's modulus increase the frequencies. However, thermal loads acting in the positive direction and an increase in the ratio of fiber mass density to matrix mass density lead to a decrease in frequencies. In this study, it is clear from the eigenvalue solution calculating the frequencies of thermally loaded embbeded short-fiber-reinforced nanobeams that changing the stiffness of the deformable springs provides frequency control while keeping the other properties of the nanobeam constant.

  • Bellows is a component in piping systems which absorbs mechanical deformation with flexibility. Its geometry is an axial symmetric shell which consists of two toroidal shells and one annular plate or conical shell. In order to analyze bellows, this study presents the finite element analysis using a conical frustum shell element. A finite element analysis is developed to analyze various bellows. The validity of the developed program is verified by the experimental results for axial and lateral stiffness. The formula for calculating the natural frequency of bellows is made by the simple beam theory. The formula for fatigue life is also derived by experiments. The shape optimal design problem is formulated using multiple objective optimization. The multiple objective functions are transformed to a scalar function by weighting factors. The stiffness, strength and specified stiffness are considered as the multiple objective function. The formulation has inequality constraints imposed on the fatigue limit, the natural frequencies, and the manufacturing conditions. Geometric parameters of bellows are the design variables. The recursive quadratic programming algorithm is selected to solve the problem. The results are compared to existing bellows, and the characteristics of bellows is investigated through optimal design process. The optimized shape of bellows is expected to give quite a good guideline to practical design.

  • The damage detection method using the extended Kalman filter(EKF) technique has been continuously used since EKF can estimation the responses of the damaged building structure and the stiffness of the structure. However, in the use of EKF, the requirement of setting the initial paramters P, Q, and R has caused the divergence and instability of the state vector, and various researches have been conducted to determine theses parameters. In this paper, adaptive extended Kalman filter(AEKF) method is proposed to solve the problem of setting the values of P, Q, and R, which are important parameters determining the convergence performance of the EKF state vector. By using the AEKF method proposed in this study, the P, Q, and R parameters are updated every k steps. The proposed algorithm is applied for the estimation of stiffness and the damage detection of 3-DOF problem. Based of the verification, it can be found that the selection process for the values of P, Q, and R can improve the convergence performance of EKF.
