  • This paper demonstrates an application of the perturbation based stochastic finite element method (SFEM) for predicting the performance of structural systems made of composite sections with random material properties. The composite member consists of materials in contact each of which can surround a finite number of inclusions. The perturbation based stochastic finite element analysis can provide probabilistic behavior of a structure, only the first two moments of random variables need to be known, and should therefore be suitable as an alternative to Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) for realizing structural analysis. A summary of stiffness matrix formulation of composite systems and perturbation based stochastic finite element dynamic analysis formulation of structural systems made of composite sections is given. Two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the method. During stochastic analysis, displacements and sectional forces of composite systems are obtained from perturbation and Monte Carlo methods by changing elastic modulus as random variable. The results imply that perturbation based SFEM method gives close results to MCS method and it can be used instead of MCS method, especially, if computational cost is taken into consideration.

  • An eigenvalue analysis of a tunable micro-mechanical actuator is presented. The actuator is modeled as a continuum structure. The eigenvalue modified by the tuning voltage is computed through the linearization of the relation between the electrostatic force and the displacement at the equilibrium. A staggered algorithm is employed to perform the coupled analysis of the electrostatic and elastic fields. The stiffness matrix of the actuator is modified at this equilibrium state. The displacement field is perturbed using an eigenmode profile of the actuator. The configuration change of the actuator due to perturbation modifies the electrostatic field and thus the electrostatic force. The equivalent stiffness matrix corresponding to the perturbation and the change in the electrostatic force is then added to stiffness matrix in order to explain natural frequency shifting. The numerical examples are presented and compared with the experiments in the literatures.

  • The present paper investigates the stochastic seismic responses of steel structure systems with Partially Restrained (PR) connections by using Perturbation based Stochastic Finite Element (PSFEM) method. A stiffness matrix formulation of steel systems with PR connections and PSFEM and MCS formulations of structural systems are given. Based on the formulations, a computer program in FORTRAN language has been developed, and stochastic seismic analyses of steel frame and bridge systems have been performed for different types of connections. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are assumed to be random variables in the analyses. The Kocaeli earthquake occurred in 1999 is considered as a ground motion. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are considered to be random variables. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed SFEM algorithm are validated by comparison with results of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method.

  • In this paper, a new method to solve the dynamic response problem for structures with interval parameters is presented. It is difficult to obtain all possible solutions with sharp bounds even an optimum scheme is adopted when there are many interval structural parameters. With the interval algorithm, the expressions of the interval stiffness matrix, damping matrix and mass matrices are developed. Based on the matrix perturbation theory and interval extension of function, the upper and lower bounds of dynamic response are obtained, while the sharp bounds are guaranteed by the interval operations. A numerical example, dynamic response analysis of a box cantilever beam, is given to illustrate the validity of the present method.

  • The stochastic stability control of the parameter-excited vibration of an inclined stay cable with multiple modes coupling under random and periodic combined support disturbances is studied by using the direct eigenvalue analysis approach based on the response moment stability, Floquet theorem, Fourier series and matrix eigenvalue analysis. The differential equation with time-varying parameters for the transverse vibration of the inclined cable with control under random and deterministic support disturbances is derived and converted into the randomly and deterministically parameter-excited multi-degree-of-freedom vibration equations. As the stochastic stability of the parameter-excited vibration is mainly determined by the characteristics of perturbation moment, the differential equation with only deterministic parameters for the perturbation second moment is derived based on the $It{\hat{o}}$ stochastic differential rule. The stochastically and deterministically parameter-excited vibration stability is then determined by the deterministic parameter-varying response moment stability. Based on the Floquet theorem, expanding the periodic parameters of the perturbation moment equation and the periodic component of the characteristic perturbation moment expression into the Fourier series yields the eigenvalue equation which determines the perturbation moment behavior. Thus the stochastic stability of the parameter-excited cable vibration under the random and periodic combined support disturbances is determined directly by the matrix eigenvalues. The direct eigenvalue analysis approach is applicable to the stochastic stability of the control cable with multiple modes coupling under various periodic and/or random support disturbances. Numerical results illustrate that the multiple cable modes need to be considered for the stochastic stability of the parameter-excited cable vibration under the random and periodic support disturbances, and the increase of the control damping rather than control stiffness can greatly enhance the stochastic stability of the parameter-excited cable vibration including the frequency width increase of the periodic disturbance and the critical value increase of the random disturbance amplitude.

  • The stiffness degradation of the cross-ply composite laminates containing a transverse cracking and delamination in $90^{\circ}$ layer is predicted by using a modified shear-lag model by introducing the stress perturbation function. The prediction shows better agreement with the experimental results published by Ogihara and Takeda 1995, especially for laminates with thicker $90^{\circ}$ plies in which extensive delamination occurs. A homogenised analytic model for average transient moisture uptake in composite laminates containing periodically distributed matrix cracks and delamination is presented. It is shown that the model well describes the moisture absorption in a cross-ply composite laminate containing periodically distributed transverse matrix cracks in the $90^{\circ}$ plies. The obtained results represent well the dependence of the stiffness degradation on the crack density, thickness ratio and moisture absorption. The present study has proved to be important to the understanding of the degradation of the material propertiesin the failure process when the laminates in which the delamination grows extensively.

  • This paper presents a robust hybrid control system for seismic response control of a cable-stayed bridge. Because multiple control devices are operating, a hybrid control system could alleviate some of restirctions and limitations that exist when each system is acting alone. A LQG algorithm with on-off control scheme, H$_2$ and H$_{\infty}$ control algorithms with various frequency weighting filters are used to improve the controller robustness of the active control part in the hybrid control system. The numerital simulation results show that control performances of robust hybrid control systems are similar to those of the hybrid control system with LQG algorithm. Furthermore, it is verified that robust hybrid control systems are more robust than the hybrid control system with LQG algorithm and there are no signs of instabilities in the $\pm$5% stiffness matrix perturbed system. Therefore, the proposed hybrid control system have a good robustness for stiffness matrix perturbation without loss of control effectiveness.

  • This paper demonstrates how ambient vibration measurements at a limited number of locations can be effectively utilized to estimate parameters of a finite element model of a large-scale structural system involving a large number of elements. System identification using ambient vibration measurements presents a challenge requiring the use of special identification techniques, which ran deal with very small magnitudes of ambient vibration contaminated by noise without the knowledge of input farces. In the present study, the modal parameters such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes of the structural system were estimated by means of appropriate system identification techniques including the random decrement method. Moreover, estimation of parameters such as the stiffness matrix of the finite element model from the system response measured by a limited number of sensors is another challenge. In this study, the system stiffness matrix was estimated by using the quadratic optimization involving the computed and measured modal strain energy of the system, with the aid of a sensitivity relationship between each element stiffness and the modal parameters established by the second order inverse modal perturbation theory. The finite element models thus identified represent the actual structural system very well, as their calculated dynamic characteristics satisfactorily matched the observed ones from the ambient vibration test performed on a large-scale structural system subjected primarily to ambient wind excitations. The dynamic models identified by this study will be used for design of an active mass damper system to be installed on this structure fer suppressing its wind vibration.

  • A variational nodal method (VNM) with unstructured-mesh is presented for solving steady-state and dynamic neutron diffusion equations. Orthogonal polynomials are employed for spatial discretization, and the stiffness confinement method (SCM) is implemented for temporal discretization. Coordinate transformation relations are derived to map unstructured triangular nodes to a standard node. Methods for constructing triangular prism space trial functions and identifying unique nodes are elaborated. Additionally, the partitioned matrix (PM) and generalized partitioned matrix (GPM) methods are proposed to accelerate the within-group and power iterations. Neutron diffusion problems with different fuel assembly geometries validate the method. With less than 5 pcm eigenvalue (keff) error and 1% relative power error, the accuracy is comparable to reference methods. In addition, a test case based on the kilowatt heat pipe reactor, KRUSTY, is created, simulated, and evaluated to illustrate the method's precision and geometrical flexibility. The Dodds problem with a step transient perturbation proves that the SCM allows for sufficiently accurate power predictions even with a large time-step of approximately 0.1 s. In addition, combining the PM and GPM results in a speedup ratio of 2-3.
