  • Most of materials receive force in using, therefore, the characteristics of materials must be considered in system design not to occur deformation or destruction. Mechanical properties about materials can be expressed as responsible level of material itself under the exterior operation. Main mechanical properties is strength, hardness, ductility and stiffness etc. Currently, among major measure facilities to measure such mechanical properties, advanced indentation technique has focused in industrial areas as reason of nondestructive and easy applications for mechanical tensile properties and evaluation of residual stress of materials. This study is to find the optimum experimental condition about residual stress advanced indentation technique for accurate analysis of the welded joint of steel materials through indentation load-depth curve obtained from cruciform specimen experiment. Optimum selection was applied to the welded joint of real steel materials to give non-equi-biaxial stress state and compared with general residual stress analyzing method for verification.

  • Recently, there is to increase interest in seismic performance of piers. Hollow section is applied to increasing the seismic performance of piers. However, hollow RC pier becomes the biaixial confining state because hollow part is not confined. The pier is developed brittle failure from inner face in hollow part. A tube is inserted in hollow part to become the weakness. This is ICH RC(Internally Confined Hollow RC) pier. This pier is enhanced stiffness, strength, and ductility by core concrete has triaxial confining stress. In this paper is researched about parameters effect the seismic performance. Parameters are hollow ratio, transverse reinforcement, longitudinal reinforcement, and concrete strength.

  • The use of Buckling Restrained Braces (BRB) for enhancing the performance of the buildings is gaining wider acceptance. This paper presents the first application of these devices in a major high-rise building in the Philippines. A 50-storey residential reinforced concrete building tower, with ductile core wall, with BRB system is investigated. The detailed modeling and design procedure of buckling restrained brace system is presented for the optimal design against the two distinct levels of earthquake ground motions; serviceable behavior for frequent earthquakes and very low probability of collapse under extremely rare earthquakes. The stiffness and strength of the buckling restrained brace system are adjusted to optimize the performance of the structural system under different levels of earthquakes. Response spectrum analysis is conducted for Design Basis Earthquake level and Service level, while nonlinear time history analysis is performed for the most credible earthquake. The case study results show the effectiveness of buckling restrained braces.

Flexural Behavior of RC Beams made of High Flowing Self-Compacting Concrete with Normal Strength (보통강도 고유동 자기충전 철근 콘크리트 보의 휨거동)

  • The research conducts a four-point loading test by making two reinforced concrete beams(HSCC test specimen and conventional concrete test specimen) in order to apply an HSCC with a normal strength(30MPa) to a structure. Also, it compares and analyzes the characteristics of the flexural behavior of HSCC and conventional concrete. The stiffness and ductility of the test specimens of HSCC and conventional concrete show similar behavior, but HSCC is more effective in crack control than conventional concrete. The result of the research demonstrates that HSCC can be applied in the construction site.

  • Due to a high level of system ductility, steel moment resisting frames have been widely used for lateral force resisting structural systems in high seismic zones. Earthquake field investigations after Northridge earthquake in 1994 and Kobe earthquake in 1995 have reported that many steel moment resisting frames designed before 1990's had suffered significant damages and structural collapse. In this research, seismic performance assessment of steel moment resisting frames designed in accordance with the previous seismic provisions before 1990's was performed. Buckling-restrained braces and shear walls are considered for seismic retrofit of the reference buildings. Increasing stiffness and strength of the buildings using buckling-restrained braces and shear walls are considered as options to rehabilitate the damaged buildings. Probabilistic seismic performance assessment using fragility analysis results is used for the criteria for determining an appropriate seismic retrofit strategy. The fragility contour method can be used to provide an intial guideline to structural engineers when various structural retrofit options for the damaged buildings are available.

  • The coupled shear wall system with coupling beams is an efficient structural system for high-rise buildings because it can provide excellent ductility and energy dissipation to the buildings. The objective of this study is to simulate the hysteretic behavior of diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams including pinching and cyclic deteriorations in strength and stiffness using a numerical model. For this purpose, coupling beams are modeled with an elastic beam element and plastic spring element placed at the beam ends. Parameters for the analytical model was calibrated based on the test results of 6 specimens for diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams. The analytical model with calibrated model parameters is verified by comparing the hysteretic curves obtained from analysis and experimental tests.

An investigation of anchorage to the edge of steel plates bonded to RC structures

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental study investigating the effects of anchorage systems used in externally bonded steel plates on the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structures. In the literature, diagonal steel plates bonded to frames were designed to be more flexible than the connections to eliminate the possible effect of the connection flexibility. However, to better evaluate the performance of the strengthened structures, the strength and behavior of connections should also be considered. The purpose of this study was to experimentally investigate the effects of different connection types of steel plates bonded to the frame using anchors on the strengthened RC structures. For this purpose, eleven specimens were designed to simulate the interior and exterior connection behavior. Two of these were used as the control beams and remaining nine for the investigation of the functionality of the end steel plates. Experimental results show that the load carrying capacity of the strengthened beams is directly related to the connection types of the steel plates. For the interior connections, L-shaped end plates that were strengthened using steel anchors must have adequate stiffness to prevent its shape. While, for the exterior connections, the connection with three anchors carried more load than the other exterior connections.

  • The concrete filled steel tubular column have to superior in compressive load carrying capacity, compared with same section typed hollow steel tube column, and have many excellent structural properties, such as stiffness improvement by filled concrete, improvement of ductility by reinforced effect of local buckling, and the like. However, it has not clear the effect of interaction between steel tube and filled concrete, stress portion ratio and fracture mechanism of concrete. This study investigated to structural properties for high strength concrete filled steel tube column by loading conditions through a series of experiments. Especially, this study investigated the properties of structural behaviors for concrete filled steel tube column stress ratio by loading conditions and failure mechanism of filled concrete.

Experimental characterization of timber framed masonry walls cyclic behaviour

  • After the large destruction of Lisbon due to the 1755 earthquake, the city had to be almost completely rebuilt. In this context, an innovative structural solution was implemented in new buildings, comprising internal timber framed walls which, together with the floors timber elements, constituted a 3-D framing system, known as "cage", providing resistance and deformation capacity for seismic loading. The internal timber framed masonry walls, in elevated floors, are constituted by a timber frame with vertical and horizontal elements, braced with diagonal elements, known as Saint Andrew's crosses, with masonry infill. This paper describes an experimental campaign to assess the in-plane cyclic behaviour of those so called "frontal" walls. A total series of 4 tests were conducted in 4 real size walls. Two models consist of the simple timber frames without masonry infill, and the other two specimens have identical timber frames but present masonry infill. Experimental characterization of the in-plane behaviour was carried out by static cyclic shear testing with controlled displacements. The loading protocol used was the CUREE for ordinary ground motions. The hysteretic behaviour main parameters of such walls subjected to cyclic loading were computed namely the initial stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity.

Behaviour of recycled aggregate concrete beam-column connections in presence of PET fibers at the joint region

  • In this paper the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column connections under cyclic loading was analyzed. The specimens, manufactured in a reduced-scale were made of (a) recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) by replacing 30% of natural coarse aggregate (NCA) with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and (b) RAC incorporating Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber i.e., PET fiber-reinforced concrete (PFRC) at the joint region. PET fiber (aspect ratio=25) of 0.5% by weight of concrete used in the PFRC mix was obtained by hand cutting of post-consumer PET bottles. A reference specimen was also prepared using 100% of NCA and subjected to similar loading sequence. Comparing the results the structural behavior under cyclic loading of RAC specimens are quite similar to the reference specimens. Damage tolerance, load resisting capacity, stiffness degradation, ductility, and energy dissipation of the RAC specimens enhanced due to addition of PET fibers at the joint region. PFRC specimens also presented a lower damage indices and higher principal tensile stresses as compared to the RAC specimens. The results obtained gave experimental evidence on the feasibility of RAC for structural use. Using PET fibers as a discrete reinforcement is recommended for improving the seismic performance of RAC specimens.
