Comparisons of Various DEM Interpolation Techniques

  • Extracting a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from spaceborne imagery is important for cartographic applications of remote sensing data. The procedure for such DEM generation can be divided into stereo matching, sensor modelling and DEM interpolation. Among these, DEM interpolation contributes significantly to the completeness and accuracy of a DEM and, yet, this technique is often considered "trivial". However, na\ulcornere DEM interpolation may result in a less accurate and sometimes meaningless DEM. This paper reports the performance analysis of various DEM interpolation techniques. Using a manually derived DEM as reference, a number of sample points were created randomly. Different interpolation techniques were applied to the sample points to generate DEMs. The performance of interpolation was assessed by the accuracy of such DEMs. The results showed that kriging gave the best results at all times whereas nearest neighborhood interpolation provided a fast solution with moderate accuracy when sample points were large enough.

  • In this paper, the direct linear transformation is described in which a inner and exterior orientation parameters are treated as unknown for non-iterative direct space resection, and the computer program was developed to obtain object space coordinates. Image coordinates measurements are conducted with analogue stereo-plotter and digitizer. To prove the appropriateness of the two image coordinate measurement devices and the DLT method, the standard errors of object space coordinates are compared with semi-analytical method.

  • The 3-dimensional measurement using stereo vision system must achieve a camera calibration. So far, the 3-dimensional calibration technique that uses two-dimensional grid papar and a non-linear least square method has been developed and tested. But, this method is inefficient because it has many calculation procedure and a non-linear analysis. Therefore, this paper proposed the projective geometric method which produced the calibration parameter by vanishing point. The vanishing point is producted by a cross ratio and a parallel line pairs. The results of the computer simulation show utility of the proposed method.

Obstacle Position Detection on an Inclined Plane Using Randomized Hough Transform and Corner Detection (랜덤하프변환과 코너추출을 이용한 경사면의 장애물 위치 탐색)

  • This paper suggests a judgement method for an inclined plane before entrance of it and the detection of obstacle position. Main idea is started from the assumption that obstacle is always on the bottom plane, and corner appears at this position. The process to detect the obstacle consists of three steps. First the 3D data using stereo matching is acquired to detect an obstacle. Second a bottom plane is extracted by using limit condition. Last the obstacle position is found by using Harris corner detection. Obstacle position detection on an inclined plane was verified by outdoor and indoor experiment. In error analysis, it is confirmed that an average error of obstacle detection in outdoor was larger than the error in indoor but the error are within about 0.030 m. This method will be applied to unmanned vehicles to navigate under various environment.

  • The most widespread techniques for DEM generation are stereoscopy for optical sensor images and interfereometry for SAR images. These techniques suffer from certain sensor and processing limitations, which can be overcome by the synergetic use of both sensors and DEMs respectively. In this paper, different strategies for fusing SAR and optical data are combined to derive high quality DEM products. The filtering techniques, which take advantage of the complementary properties of SAR and stereo optical DEMs, will be applied for the fusion process. By taking advantage of the fact that errors of the DEMs are of different nature using the filtering technique, affected part are filtered and replaced by those of the counterpart and is tested with two sets of SPOT and ERS DEM, resulting in a remarkable improvement in DEM. for the analysis of results, the reference DEM is generated from digital base map(1:5000).

AUTOMATIC BUILDING EXTRACTION BASED ON MULTI-SOURCE DATA FUSION

  • An automatic approach and strategy for extracting building information from aerial images using combined image analysis and interpretation techniques is described in this paper. A dense DSM is obtained by stereo image matching. Multi-band classification, DSM, texture segmentation and Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are used to reveal building interest areas. Then, based on the derived approximate building areas, a shape modelling algorithm based on the level set formulation of curve and surface motion has been used to precisely delineate the building boundaries. Data fusion, based on the Dempster-Shafer technique, is used to interpret simultaneously knowledge from several data sources of the same region, to find the intersection of propositions on extracted information derived from several datasets, together with their associated probabilities. A number of test areas, which include buildings with different sizes, shape and roof colour have been investigated. The tests are encouraging and demonstrate that the system is effective for building extraction, and the determination of more accurate elevations of the terrain surface.

Research on Machine Learning Rules for Extracting Audio Sources in Noise

  • This study presents five selection rules for training algorithms to extract audio sources from noise. The five rules are Dynamics, Roots, Tonal Balance, Tonal-Noisy Balance, and Stereo Width, and the suitability of each rule for sound extraction was determined by spectrogram analysis using various types of sample sources, such as environmental sounds, musical instruments, human voice, as well as white, brown, and pink noise with sine waves. The training area of the algorithm includes both melody and beat, and with these rules, the algorithm is able to analyze which specific audio sources are contained in the given noise and extract them. The results of this study are expected to improve the accuracy of the algorithm in audio source extraction and enable automated sound clip selection, which will provide a new methodology for sound processing and audio source generation using noise.

  • Stereophotogrammetry is used to extract spatial information of an interested object by constructing a stereo-image from two or more photos. In this study, the stereophotogrammetry was adopted for a rock joint survey in mine tunnels. The orientations of discontinuities were measured from two mine tunnels with a clinocompass. To evaluate the effect of photographing light level on the stereophotogrammetry analysis, the light intensity was changed within a predefined range for every photograph. Those photographs were analyzed by using a commercial code for stereophotogrammetry - ShapeMetriX 3D, and the results from the analysis were compared with the manual measurement using a clinocompass.

  • This paper describes the algorithm that lowers the dimension, maintains the object recognition and significantly reduces the eigenspace configuration time by combining the higher correlation feature information and Principle Component Analysis. Since the suggested method doesn't require a lot of computation than the method using existing geometric information or stereo image, the fact that it is very suitable for building the real-time system has been proved through the experiment. In addition, since the existing point to point method which is a simple distance calculation has many errors, in this paper to improve recognition rate the recognition error could be reduced by using several successive input images as a unit of recognition with K-Nearest Neighbor which is the improved Class to Class method.

  • RQD is used to evaluate the degree of fracture in the rock mass and is also used as input into rock mass classification scheme, such as RMR and Q-system. However there are some drawbacks of the RQD caused by anisotropy and calculation length. Thus it is important to understand the variation of RQD in 3-D space in order to evaluate the properties of rock mass. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the distribution of RQD in the equal-angle stereo net, to investigate the effects of scanline length and joint frequency and to inquire the effect on the selection of rock mass strength parameters in the numerical analysis. Analysis has been extended to field joint survey data using same method. The results can be applied to contribute for more accurate interpretation of the results of engineering geological survey for better design and construction work.
