  • In this study, the nonlinear vibrations of stepped beams having different boundary conditions were investigated. The equations of motions were obtained using Hamilton's principle and made non dimensional. The stretching effect induced non-linear terms to the equations. Forcing and damping terms were also included in the equations. The dimensionless equations were solved for six different set of boundary conditions. A perturbation method was applied to the equations of motions. The first terms of the perturbation series lead to the linear problem. Natural frequencies for the linear problem were calculated exactly for different boundary conditions. Second order non-linear terms of the perturbation series behave as corrections to the linear problem. Amplitude and phase modulation equations were obtained. Non-linear free and forced vibrations were investigated in detail. The effects of the position and magnitude of the step, as well as effects of different boundary conditions on the vibrations, were determined.

  • In-plane free vibrations of circular beams with stepped cross-sections are investigated by using the exact analytical solution. The axial extension, transverse shear deformation and rotatory inertia effects are taken into account. The stepped arch is divided into a number of arches with constant cross-sections. The exact solution of the governing equations is obtained by the initial value method. Several examples of arches with different step ratios, different locations of the steps, boundary conditions, opening angles and slenderness ratios for the first few modes are presented to illustrate the validity and accuracy of the method. The effects of the geometric parameters on the natural frequencies are investigated in details. Several examples in the literature are solved and the results are given in tables. The agreement of the results is good for all examples considered. The mode transition phenomenon is also observed for the stepped arches. Some examples are solved also numerically by using the commercial finite element program ANSYS.

  • The aim of this study is to estimate the strength of injection molded plastic stepped gear. We considered stepped gear as plate model which are fixed by two edges. While, on the other sides are free. Normal gear is calculated by Lewis formula which can be derived quite simply from the equation for the stress at the root of a cantilever beam. Stress ratio(step factor) is represented for the ratio of the bending stress of normal and the bending stress of stepped gear, and it is plotted by face width factor. This study is propose the step factor added in Dupont equation which are strength estimation of step gear

  • This study suggests a simple, convenient and non-destructive method for investigation of the Young's modulus detection in stepped shafts which only utilizes the first-order resonant frequency in flexural mode and dimensions of structures. The method is based on the impulse excitation technique (IET) to pick up the fundamental resonant frequencies. The standard Young's modulus detection formulas for rectangular and circular cross-sections are well investigated in literatures. However, the Young's modulus of stepped shafts can not be directly detected using the formula for a beam with rectangular or circular cross-section. A response surface method (RSM) is introduced to design numerical simulation experiments to build up experimental formula to detect Young's modulus of stepped shafts. The numerical simulation performed by finite element method (FEM) to obtain enough simulation data for RSM analysis. After analysis and calculation, the relationship of flexural resonant frequencies, dimensions of stepped shafts and Young's modulus is obtained. Numerical simulations and experimental investigations show that the IET method can be used to investigate Young's modulus in stepped shafts, and the FEM simulation and RSM based IET formula proposed in this paper is applicable to calculate the Young's modulus in stepped shaft. The method can be further developed to detect mechanical parameters of more complicated structures using the combination of FEM simulation and RSM.

  • This paper derives the generalized stiffness to find dynamic characteristics and its derivatives of a continuous system. And a new sensitivity analysis method is presented by using the amount of change of generalized stiffness and vibrational mode caused by the variation of stiffness. In this paper, to get or detect appropriate results, cantilever beam and stepped beam and stepped beam are used. Deviations of sensitivity coefficient, natural frequency, and vibrational mode are calculated as result, and compared with the theoretical exact values.

  • In the practical engineering fields, the horizontally curved beams are frequently erected as the major/minor structural components. The effects of both variable curvature and variable cross-section on structural behavior are very important and therefore these effects should be included in structural analyses. From this viewpoint, this paper deals with the free vibrations of horizontally curved beams with variable curvature and variable cross-section. In this study, the parabola as the curvilinear shape and stepped beam as the variable cross-section are considered. The ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beams are derived. For calculating the natural frequencies, the governing equations are solved by numerical methods. The Runge-Kutta and Determinant search Methods are used for integrating the differential equations and for calculating the natural frequencies, respectively. With regard to numerical results, the relationships between frequency parameters and various beam parameters are presented in the forms of Table and Figures.
