  • This paper presents the experimental results of behacior of slender square hollow section columns strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets subjected to concentrated axial loading. Three long specimens were fabricated and one stub column were fabricated. The main parameters were the number of CFRP layers. From the tests, it was observed that global buckling were occurred at the center of specimen for unretrofitting slender column. However, CFRP retrofitting could prevent the global buckling of slender column. Maximum increase of 22% was also achieved in axial-load capacity with three longitudinal layered CFRP applied on four sides of steel tubes.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of behavior of square CFT columns with large the width-ro thickness ratio strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets subjected to concentrated axial loading. The main parameters were b/t ratio and the number of CFRP layers and 6 specimens were fabricated. The values of b/t were ranged from 60 to 100. From the tests, Maximum increase of 16% was also achieved in axial-load capacity with three transverse layered CFRP applied on four sides of steel tubes. The load capacity decreased up to 41% comparing with nominal load capacity of unstrengthened CFT column. However, for CFRP strengthened CFT, the load capacity decreased up to 32%. Finally, from the load-strain relationships, the local buckling occurred before yield point of steel tubes. Also, from the load-strain relationships, it was observed that local buckling were delayed on CFT columns by CFRP sheets retrofitting.

  • This study presents the effectiveness of a composite structure at improving blast resistance. The proposed composite structure consists of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and steel layers. While CFRP layer is used for blast energy reflection due to its high strength, steel layer is used for blast energy absorption due to its high ductility. A dynamic model is used to simulate the elastoplastic behavior of the proposed composite structure subject to blast load. Considering the magnitude variations of a blast event, the probability of failure of each layer is evaluated using reliability analysis. By assigning design probability of failure of each layer in the composite structure, the thickness of layers is optimized. A case study for the design of CFRP-steel composite structure subjected to an uncertain blast event is also presented.

  • Nowadays using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) has been expanded in strengthening steel structures. Given that few studies have taken about strengthening of steel hollow pipe sections using CFRP, in present study, the effects of CFRP sheets using two layers as well as in combination with additional reinforcing strips has been assessment. Strengthening of five specimens was carried out in laboratory tests. As well as numerical simulation was performed for all specimens by Finite Element Method (FEM) using ABAQUS software and high correlation between the results of numerical models with experimental data indicate the power of FEM in this field. The results of both laboratory and simulated specimens showed that load-bearing capacity of circular cross-sections can be significantly increased using CFRP retrofitting technique. Also, application of additional CFRP reinforcing strips and layers caused more strength for the strengthened specimens.

  • The pipe of CFRP for bicycle frame is designed and made for light weight of bicycle and then its suitability to bicycle frame is verified by comparing the other material i.e. steel, Cr-Mo steel, Al alloy pipe for bicycle frame. The pipe of CFRP is laminated to [0/$\pm$45]$_T$ and made by tape winding method and then its degree of light weight is evaluated by comparing the other pipes which is made by steel etc.

  • This paper presents a theoretical and finite element (FE) study on the stress intensity factors of double-edged cracked steel beams strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. By simplifying the tension flange of the steel beam using a steel plate in tension, the solutions obtained for the stress intensity factors of the double-edged cracked steel plate strengthened with CFRP plates were used to evaluate those of the steel beam specimens. The correction factor α1 was modified based on the transformed section method, and an additional correction factor φ was introduced into the expressions. Three-dimensional FE modeling was conducted to calculate the stress intensity factors. Numerous combinations of the specimen geometry, crack length, CFRP thickness and Young's modulus, adhesive thickness and shear modulus were analyzed. The numerical results were used to investigate the variations in the stress intensity factor and the additional correction factor φ. The proposed expressions are a function of applied stress, crack length, the ratio between the crack length and half the width of the tension flange, the stiffness ratio between the CFRP plate and tension flange, adhesive shear modulus and thickness. Finally, the proposed expressions were verified by comparing the theoretical and numerical results.

  • With respect to rehabilitation, strengthening and retrofitting of existing and deteriorated columns in buildings and bridges, CFRP sheets have been found effective in enhancing the performance of existing RC columns by wrapping and bonding CFRP sheets externally around the concrete. Concrete columns and piers that are confined by both lateral steel reinforcement and CFRP are sometimes referred to as "hybrid" concrete columns. With the availability of experimental data on concrete columns confined by steel reinforcement and/or CFRP, the study presents modeling using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the compressive strength of hybrid circular RC columns. The prediction of the ultimate confined compressive strength of RC columns is very important especially when this value is used in estimating the capacity of structures. The present ANN model used as parameters for the confining materials the lateral steel ratio (${\rho}_s$) and the FRP volumetric ratio (${\rho}_{FRP}$). The model gave good predictions for three types of confined columns: (a) columns confined with steel reinforcement only, (b) CFRP confined columns, and (c) hybrid columns confined by both steel and CFRP. The model may be used for predicting the compressive strength of existing circular RC columns confined with steel only that will be strengthened or retrofitted using CFRP.

  • The application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites for rehabilitation of steel structures has become vital in recent years. This paper presents an experimental program and a finite element (FE) modelling approach to study the effectiveness of CFRP patch for repair of notch damaged circular hollow sectional (CHS) steel beams. The proposed modeling approach is unique because it takes into account the orthotropic behavior and stacking sequence of composite materials. Parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of initial damage (i.e., notch depth) on flexural performance of the notched beams and effectiveness of the repair system using the validated FE models. Results demonstrated the ability of CFRP patch to repair notched CHS steel beams, restoring them to their original flexural stiffness and strength. The effect of composite patch repair technique on post-elastic stiffness was more pronounced compared to the elastic stiffness. Composite patch repair becomes more effective when the level of initial damage of beam increases.

  • In this study, the static and low velocity impact tests for two-way concrete specimens strengthening with the CFRP sheets were carried out. The specimens that had a dimension of $50{\times}350{\times}350mm$ with 40 MPa plain concrete and steel fiber reinforced concrete which had same mixture to plain concrete and 0.75% steel fibers were fabricated. The specimens reinforced with the CFRP or steel fibers showed mixed failure modes, splitting and punching, also splitting cracks and fragments were much reduced than plain concrete specimens'. Two-way concrete members reinforced with the CFRP and steel fiber simultaneously dissipated 6.8 times larger energy than not-retrofitted members' under the low-velocity impact loading.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental study to investigate the mechanical behavior of partially encased composite columns confined by CFRP under axial compression. The results show that the failure of the partially encased composite columns confined by CFRP occurred due to rupture of the CFRP followed by local buckling of the steel flanges. External wrapping of CFRP effectively delayed the local buckling of the steel flanges. The load carrying capacity of the column increased with the application of CFRP sheet. And the enhancement effect of the column was increased with the number of CFRP layer.
