  • This paper summarizes recent development of analytical and algorithmical results for stationary FIFO queues with multiple Markovian arrival streams, where service time distributions are general and they may differ for different arrival streams. While this kind of queues naturally arises in considering queues with a superposition of independent phase-type arrivals, the conventional approach based on the queue length dynamics (i.e., M/G/1 pradigm) is not applicable to this kind of queues. On the contrary, the workload process has a Markovian property, so that it is analytically tractable. This paper first reviews the results for the stationary distributions of the amount of work-in-system, actual waiting time and sojourn time, all of which were obtained in the last six years by the author. Further this paper shows an alternative approach, recently developed by the author, to analyze the joint queue length distribution based on the waiting time distribution. An emphasis is placed on how to construct a numerically feasible recursion to compute the stationary queue length mass function.

  • Crown ether-based HPLC chiral stationary phases (CSPs) have been successfully utilized in the resolution of various racemic compounds containing a primary amino group. Especially, CSPs based on chiral crown ethers incorporating chiral binaphthyl unit or tartaric acid unit and based on phenolic pseudo chiral crown ethers have shown high chiral recognition efficiency. In this account paper, a review on the development of crown etherbased HPLC CSPs, their structural characteristics and applications to the resolution of racemic compounds including chiral drugs containing a primary or secondary amino group with the variation of the type and the content of mobile phase components and with the variation of the column temperature is presented.

  • Two liquid chromatographic chiral stationary phases (CSPs) based on (+)-(18-crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid were successfully applied in the resolution of racemic tocainide and its analogues. In the resolution of tocainide, especially, the CSP containing N-CH₃ amide tethering groups was quite effective, showing clear baseline resolution (RS: 2.66) with reasonable enantioselectivity ( a: 1.25). Consequently, the CSP containing N-CH₃ amide tethering groups is expected to be useful to monitor the enantiomeric composition of tocainide in clinical samples. In addition, the chromatographic behaviors for the resolution of tocainide and its analogues on the two CSPs were found controllable by varying the content and the type of organic and acidic modifiers in aqueous mobile phase.

  • Generalized processor sharing(GPS) service policy is a scheduling algorithm to allocate the bandwidth of a queueing system with multi-class input traffic. In a queueing system with single-class traffic, the stationary queue length becomes larger stochastically when the bandwidth (i.e. the service rate) of the system decreases. For a given GPS server, we consider the similar problem to this. We define the monotonicity for the head of the line processor sharing(HLPS) servers in which the units in the heads of the queues are served simultaneously and the bandwidth allocated to each queue are determined by the numbers of units in the queues. GPS is a type of monotonic HLPS. We obtain the HLPS server whose queue length of a class stochastically bounds upper that of corresponding class in the given monotonic HLPS server for all classes. The queue lengths process of all classes in the obtained HLPS server has the stationary distribution of product form. When the given monotonic HLPS server is GPS server, we obtain the explicit form of the stationary queue lengths distribution of the bounding HLPS server. Numerical result shows how tight the stochastic bound is.

  • Differences in chromatographic properties in RPLC of four brands of cyano bonded silica stationary phases are rationalized in terms of the type and relative strength of the solute-stationary phase interactions, which can be readily inferred from multiple linear regression analyses of retention data for a set of standard compounds on the stationary phases under study based on the linear solvation energy relationships (LSERs). Although four brands of cyano bonded columns studied (CPS-Hypersil, Ultrasphere cyano, Spherisorb-CN and ${\mu}$-Bondapak-CN) have similar bonding density and have been prepared from monofunctional cyanopropylsilane reagents, they possess quite different, relative hydrogen bonding (HB) donor and acceptor strengths. Comparison of the retention behavior on a cyano-bonded silica column with that on an ODS column shows that there are significant differences in the strength of HB interactions between the solute and the stationary phase on the two columns with different functionalities. Information on the differences in the interaction characteristics among brands of the cyano-bonded silica columns and between the ODS and cyano-bonded columns can be utilized to optimize the selectivity for a given separation on these columns.

  • The effects of media composition on citric acid fermentation using surface immobilized Saccharomycopsis lipolytica were studied. The use of the standard medium for these organisms resulted in rapid decrease of citric acid production and a transformation of immobilized cell morphologies from a yeast-type to a mycelium-type. When the standard medium was enriched with vitamins, trace minerals, a growth factor and ammonium to form a Vigorous Stationary Phase (VSP) fermentation type medium, relatively stable citric acid production (10 mg/lㆍh) was obtained. Using the VSP type medium, the surface immobilized cells also retained their yeast-type form.

  • Consider a multitype queue where queued customers arc served in their order of arrival at a rate which depends on the customer type. Here we calculate the sharp asymptotics of the probability the total number of customers in the queue reaches a high level before emptying. The natural state space to describe this queue is a tree whose branches increase in length as the number of customers in the queue grows. Consequently it is difficult to prove a large deviation principle. Moreover, since service rates depend on the customer type the stationary distribution is not of product form so there is no simple expression for the stationary distribution. Instead, we use a change of measure technique which increases the arrival rate of customers and decreases the departure rate thus making large deviations common.

  • This paper aims to design and analyze the stationary fixture type automatic rotary drilling machine and estimate the safety of the machine through simulations. Working conditions of typical rock excavating machines are mostly affected by geographical conditions on the sea, such as by the ebb and flow of the tide or high waves. Due to the size of machines, it is difficult to move and install machines. So it is necessary to develop a machine that not only can be moved and installed more easily also be operated more quickly and automatically. To validate the safety of the designed structure of the machine, static analysis has been carried out. The results of stress and deformation analysises show that the designed machine is stable and safe in hard working condition.

  • In this paper, we develop the two-step procedure that detects and estimates the position of structural changes for multivariate nonstationary time series, either on mean parameters or second-order structures. We first investigate the presence of mean structural change by monitoring data through the aggregated cumulative sum (CUSUM) type statistic, a sequential procedure identifying the likely position of the change point on its trend. If no mean change point is detected, the proposed method proceeds to scan the second-order structural change by modeling the multivariate nonstationary time series with a multivariate locally stationary Wavelet process, allowing the time-localized auto-correlation and cross-dependence. Under this framework, the estimated dynamic spectral matrices derived from the local wavelet periodogram capture the time-evolving scale-specific auto- and cross-dependence features of data. We then monitor the change point from the lower-dimensional approximated space of the spectral matrices over time by applying the dynamic principal component analysis. Different from existing methods requiring prior information on the type of changes between mean and covariance structures as an input for the implementation, the proposed algorithm provides the output indicating the type of change and the estimated location of its occurrence. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated in simulations and the analysis of two real finance datasets.
