This paper summarizes recent development of analytical and algorithmical results for stationary FIFO queues with multiple Markovian arrival streams, where service time distributions are general and they may differ for different arrival streams. While this kind of queues naturally arises in considering queues with a superposition of independent phase-type arrivals, the conventional approach based on the queue length dynamics (i.e., M/G/1 pradigm) is not applicable to this kind of queues. On the contrary, the workload process has a Markovian property, so that it is analytically tractable. This paper first reviews the results for the stationary distributions of the amount of work-in-system, actual waiting time and sojourn time, all of which were obtained in the last six years by the author. Further this paper shows an alternative approach, recently developed by the author, to analyze the joint queue length distribution based on the waiting time distribution. An emphasis is placed on how to construct a numerically feasible recursion to compute the stationary queue length mass function.
In this study, we consider stationary waiting times in finite-buffer 3-node single-server queues in series with a Poisson arrival process and with either constant or non-overlapping service times. We assume that each node has a finite buffer except for the first node. The explicit expressions of waiting times in all areas of the stochastic system were driven as functions of finite buffer capacities. These explicit forms show that a system sojourn time does not depend on the finite buffer sizes, and also allow one to compute and compare characteristics of stationary waiting times at all areas under two blocking rules communication and manufacturing blocking. The goal of this study is to apply these results to an optimization problem which determines the smallest buffer capacities satisfying predetermined probabilistic constraints on stationary waiting times at all nodes. Numerical examples are also provided.
The gas chromatographic behavior of optically active N-(N-benzoyl-L-valyl)-anilide used as stationary phase is described. N-(N-benzoyl-L-valyl)-anilide has been synthesized with good yield under mild condition via Schotten-Bauman process and coated on the Chromosorb W AW (80-100mesh) for the purpose of enantiomer separation. The behavior of this compound as optically active stationary phase for the separation of the enantiomers of N-TFA-D, L-amino acid isopropyl esters has been examined with respect to the correlation between the separation factors and column temperatures. All amino acid enantiomers examined were eluted within one hour and the elution pattern showed retention times increasing in the order of alanine, valine, leucine, threonine, proline and methionine.
Generalized processor sharing(GPS) service policy is a scheduling algorithm to allocate the bandwidth of a queueing system with multi-class input traffic. In a queueing system with single-class traffic, the stationary queue length becomes larger stochastically when the bandwidth (i.e. the service rate) of the system decreases. For a given GPS server, we consider the similar problem to this. We define the monotonicity for the head of the line processor sharing(HLPS) servers in which the units in the heads of the queues are served simultaneously and the bandwidth allocated to each queue are determined by the numbers of units in the queues. GPS is a type of monotonic HLPS. We obtain the HLPS server whose queue length of a class stochastically bounds upper that of corresponding class in the given monotonic HLPS server for all classes. The queue lengths process of all classes in the obtained HLPS server has the stationary distribution of product form. When the given monotonic HLPS server is GPS server, we obtain the explicit form of the stationary queue lengths distribution of the bounding HLPS server. Numerical result shows how tight the stochastic bound is.

This paper presents an adaptive scheduling algorithm for manufacturing processes with non-stationary rework probabilities. The adaptive scheduling scheme named by hybrid Q-learning algorithm is proposed in this paper making use of the non-stationary rework probability and coupling with artificial neural networks. The proposed algorithm is measured by mean tardiness and the extensive computational results show that the presented algorithm gives very efficient schedules superior to the existing dispatching algorithms.
Cohesie sediment movement in estuarine systems is strongly affected by the phenomena of aggregation and flocculation. Aggregation is the process where primary particles are clustered together in tightly-packed formations; flocculation is the process where aggregates and single particles are bonded together to form large particle groups of very low specific density. The size, shape and strength of the flocculants control the rate of deposition and the processes of pollutant exchange between suspended sediments and ambient water. In estuarine waters, suspended sediments above the lutocline form the mobile suspension zone while below the lutocline they form the stationary suspension zone. Suspended particles in the mobile zone are generally in a dispersed state and the controlling forces are the Brownian motion and the turbulent flow fluctuations. In the stationary suspension zone, the driving force is the gravity. This paper discusses the settling and particle flocculation characteristics under quiescient flow conditions. Particles are entering the study domain randomly. Particles in the mobile suspension zone are simulated by using the Smoluchowski's model. Flocs created in the mobil suspension zone are moving into the stationary suspension zone where viscosity and drag effects are important. Utilizing the concepts of the maximum Feret's diameter and the Minkowski's sausage logic, the fractal dimension of the flocs within the stationary suspension is estimated and then compared with results obtained by other studies.
This is an extension of results of Wiener's nonlinear noise theory from noises generated by the Wiener process to noises generated by processes with stationary Gaussian increments. In particular, using Nisio's Approach, we show that every measurable ergodic noise can be approximated in law by Gaussian process-presentable noise.
We describe the DuPont Displays full color OLED printing and materials technologies. The process is more cost-effective and scalable than thermal evaporation through shadow masks. The materials lifetime is sufficient for most portable applications and is nearing that required for stationary displays. Recently, 4.3" WQVGA displays were demonstrated.
Selection or generation of appropriate input ground motion is very important in performing a dynamic analysis. In Korea, it is a common practice to use recorded strong ground motions or artificial motions. The recorded motions show non-stationary characteristics, which is a distinct property of all earthquake motions, but have the problem of not matching the design response spectrum. The artificial motions match the design spectrum, but show stationary characteristics. This study generated ground motions that preserve the non-stationary characteristics of a real earthquake motion, but also matches the design spectrum. In the process, an impulse function-based algorithm that adjusts a given time series in time domain such that it matches the target response spectrum is used. Application of the algorithm showed that it can successfully adjust any recorded motions to match the target spectrum and also preserve the non-stationary characteristics. The modified motions are used to perform a series of nonlinear site response analyses. It is shown that the results using the adjusted motions result in more reliable estimates of ground vibration. It is thus recommended that the newly adjusted motions be used in practice instead of original recorded motions.

The objective of this research work is to investigate into heat transfer characteristics of the laser cutting of CSP 1N sheet using high power CW Nd:YAG laser. In order to investigate the heat transfer characteristics, three dimensional quasi stationary and steady-state heat transfer analysis has been carried out. The laser heat source is assumed as a volumetric heat source with a gaussian heat distribution in a plane. Through the comparison of the results of analyses with those of experiments, the proper finite element model has been obtained. In addition, characteristics of the three-dimensional heat transfer and temperature distribution have been estimated by the finite element model. Finally, the minimum temperature at the center for cutting of the material has been estimated.
