  • In this paper, a design of an integral augmented optimal variable structure system(IOVSS) is presented for the prescribed output control of uncertain SISO systems under persistent disturbances. This algorithm aims at removing the problems of the reaching phase by incorporating advanced optimal control theory. By means of an integral sliding surface, the reaching phase is completely removed, and the integral sliding surface can be defined from a given initial state to origin without any reaching phase. The ideal sliding dynamics of the integral sliding surface is obtained in the form of the state equation and is designed in an optimal sense by targeting the design of the integral sliding surface and equivalent control input. The corresponding control input is selected in order to generate the sliding mode on the predetermined integral sliding surface. As a result, the whole sliding output from a given initial state to origin is completely guaranteed against persistent disturbances. Moreover the prediction/predetermination of output is enabled, which helps in improving the performance over previously implemented VSS's. Through an illustrative example, the usefulness of the algorithm is shown.

  • Analyzing monthly inflows of the Chung-Ju Dam associated with EI Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Kim and Lee(2000) reported that the fall and winter inflows in EI Nino years tended to be low while those in La Nina years tended to be high. This study proposes a methodology of employing such a teleconnection between ENSO and inflow in reservoir operations. The ENSO information is used as a hydrologic state variable in stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) to derive a monthly optimal rule for operating the Chung- Ju Dam. An alternative operating rule is also derived with the SDP with no hydrologic state variable. Both of the SDP operating rules are simulated and compared to examine the value of using the ENSO information in operations of the Chung-Ju Dam. The simulation results show that the operating rule using the ENSO information increases energy generation and reliability of water supply as well as reduces spill. spill.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive moving average (A-MA) control chart with variable sampling intervals (VSI) for detecting shifts in the process mean. The basic idea of the VSI A-MA chart is to adjust sampling intervals as well as to accumulate previous samples selectively in order to increase the sensitivity. The VSI A-MA chart employs a threshold limit to determine whether or not to increase sampling rate as well as to accumulate previous samples. If a standardized control statistic falls outside the threshold limit, the next sample is taken with higher sampling rate and is accumulated to calculate the next control statistic. If the control statistic falls within the threshold limit, the next sample is taken with lower sampling rate and only the sample is used to get the control statistic. The VSI A-MA chart produces an 'out-of-control' signal either when any control statistic falls outside the control limit or when L-consecutive control statistics fall outside the threshold limit. The control length L is introduced to prevent small mean shifts from being undetected for a long period. A Markov chain model is employed to investigate the VSI A-MA sampling process. Formulae related to the steady state average time-to signal (ATS) for an in-control state and out-of-control state are derived in closed forms. A statistical design procedure for the VSI A-MA chart is proposed. Comparative studies show that the proposed VSI A-MA chart is uniformly superior to the adaptive Cumulative sum (CUSUM) chart and to the Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) chart, and is comparable to the variable sampling size (VSS) VSI EWMA chart with respect to the ATS performance.

  • In this paper, we resolved a trade-off problem of the blind equalizer based on the stop-and-go algorithm that is commonly used for QAM demodulation in CATV receiver. The stop-and-go algorithm has used the LMS(least mean square) algorithm in the updating operation of tap weights so that the structure of equalizer is simple, but there is a trade-off between convergence speed and steady state error as in the typical LMS algorithm. We used the variable step size algrithm to improve the convergence speed with the steady state error in the constant level. With respect to the same level of the steady state error, the variable step size stop-and-go algortihm improved convergence speed by about $36%{\sim}56%$ as compared with that of the constant step size algortihm.

  • This paper proposes a selectively cumulative sum (S-CUSUM) control chart with variable sampling intervals (VSI) for detecting shifts in the process mean. The basic idea of the VSI S-CUSUM chart is to adjust sampling intervals and to accumulate previous samples selectively in order to increase the sensitivity. The VSI S-CUSUM chart employs a threshold limit to determine whether to increase sampling rate as well as to accumulate previous samples or not. If a standardized control statistic falls outside the threshold limit, the next sample is taken with higher sampling rate and is accumulated to calculate the next control statistic. If the control statistic falls within the threshold limit, the next sample is taken with lower sampling rate and only the sample is used to get the control statistic. The VSI S-CUSUM chart produces an 'out-of-control' signal either when any control statistic falls outside the control limit or when L-consecutive control statistics fall outside the threshold limit. The number L is a decision variable and is called a 'control length'. A Markov chain model is employed to describe the VSI S-CUSUM sampling process. Some useful formulae related to the steady state average time-to signal (ATS) for an in-control state and out-of-control state are derived in closed forms. A statistical design procedure for the VSI S-CUSUM chart is proposed. Comparative studies show that the proposed VSI S-CUSUM chart is uniformly superior to the VSI CUSUM chart or to the Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) chart with respect to the ATS performance.

  • For blind equalization of communication channels, concurrent equalization is useful to improve convergence characteristics. However, the concurrent equalization will result in limited performance enhancement by continuing concurrent adaptation with two algorithms after the equalizer converges to steady-state. In this paper, to improve the convergence characteristics and steady-state performance of the concurrent equalization, proposed is a new concurrent equalization technique with variable step-size parameter and weight-based tap coefficients update. The proposed concurrent vsCMA+DD equalization calculates weight factors using error signals of the variable step-size CMA (vsCMA) and DD (decision-directed) algorithm, and then updates the two equalizers based on the weights respectively. The proposed method, first, improves the error performance of the CMA by the vsCMA, and enhances the steady-state performance as well as the convergence speed further by the weight-based tap coefficients update. The performance improvement by the proposed scheme is verified through simulations.

  • Recently, particle filters have attracted attentions for nonlinear state estimation. In this approaches, a posterior probability distribution of the state variable is evaluated based on observations in simulation using so-called importance sampling. We proposed a new filter, Evolution Strategies based particle (ESP) filter to circumvent degeneracy phenomena in the importance weights, which deteriorates the filter performance, and apply it to simultaneous state and parameter estimation of nonlinear state space models. Results of numerical simulation studies illustrate the applicability of this approach.

  • We present a general uniqueness result of an endemic state for an S-I-R model with external force of infection. We reduce the problem of finding non-trivial steady state solutions to that of finding zeros of a real function of one variable so that we can easily prove the uniqueness of an endemic state. We introduce an assumption which was usually used to show stability of a non-trivial steady state. It turns out that such an assumption adopted from a stability analysis is crucial for proving the uniqueness as well, and the assumption holds for almost all cases in our model.

  • This paper presents a predictive control with H$_{\infty}$ suboptimal performance which is robust to disturbances and has a guaranteed stability. In order to derive the control law conveniently, state-space based approach, where the state variable is involved explicitly in the controller design and implementation is allowed. So an input-output model is converted to an equivalent observable canonical state-space form. The suggested control guarantees the norm bounded system output values from disturbances. A systematic way using the LMI method is presented to obtain appropriate parameters for Quadratic stability condition and optimization problem.
