Granular sludge formation and it's activity change are the most important factors in achieving successful start-up and operation of UASB reactor. Nevertheless, the detailed mechanism is still unknown. On the basic of the experiments in laboratory-scale UASB reactor, the effect of hydrogen partial pressure on sludge granulation was evaluated. Size distribution method and specific metabolic activity of the sludge with the operation time were used as a means for estimating the degree of the sludge granulation. At the constant hydrogen loading, the granulation increased as starvation periods in hydrogen supply increased, resulting in high organic removal efficiency. It was evidient that hydrogen play very important role in granulation and sludge granulation was achieved through mutual symbiosis between hydrogen utilizing bacteria and hydrogen producing bacteria under the hydrogen dificient conditions. Key words : granular sludge, UASB reactor, hydrogen partial pressure.
This study was designed to compare by the body composition in 4 groups of Sprague-Dawley rats during starvation previously fed with standard, high Carbohydrate, high protein or high fat diet. A) In different internal organs and skeletal muscles, the weights were differently reduced during starvation. Especially the weight reduction of liver was the highest level at $50{\sim}70%$, and adrenal glands did not change significantly. After death due to starvation, body weight decreased morethan 40% comparing to the initial body weight and epididmal fat pads disap peared completely. B) In rats starved to death, the changes of body composition (%) were following; lipid content was markedly reduced, while protein was similar to that of zero day starvation, ash increased slightly and water content increased. C) Five days starvation did not change body composition and body weight significantly. D) Effects of succeeding starvation after feeding 4 different diets were not significant, and it seemed that 4 different diets did not affect life span due to starvation.
In order to observe the effect of defatted ginseng which is made by extracting fat from ginseng using petroleum ether during the growth and the starvation, the powder of defatted ginseng was added to the basal diet by 25% and 50% respectively, and the mixtures were fed for 4 weeks to just weanling white female rat which weighed 78-82 g. As for the diet initake, there was not showed any meaningful difference between the defatted ginseng powder fed group and the control group (to which was fed just - the basal diet not including defatted ginseng powder), but the protein intake for the former group appeared to be reduced (P<0.02-0.01) compared to the control group. As for the growth rate, that of the defatted ginseng powder fed group appeared higher (P<0.02) than that of the control group in 1 week after feeding, but since after 2 weeks, there was not showed meaningful difference between the two groups. As for the weight-reduction rate by starvation, that of the 25% defatted ginseng powder fed group showed just 79.6% (P<0.05) of the control group's in 5 days after feeding, but the rate of the 50% defatted ginseng powder fed group appeared 119.3% of the control group's. As for the required time from the beginning of starvation to the death, it was resulted that the higher the rate of defatted ginseng addition is, the shorter the time becomes (P<0.05)
It has been known that $\gamma$-irradiation usually induces cell death in regenerating stem cell in normal tissues like skin, intestine and hematopoietic organ. The experiment were carried out to evaluate the early response of radiation injury in radiosensitive and intermediate radiosensitive tissues in feeding and starving rats with the doses of 3.5 and 7.0 Gy. The results of the study showed that the histological phenomenon was apoptosis in the doses of the radiation as the early response of tissue injury. Apoptosis were showed organ-specific and cellular specific responses suggesting that the selection of apoptosis be exactly focused on highly renewal organs and cells. It was interesting that the rats starved for 72 hours prior to irradiation induced less apoptosis in liver than fed rats. As for cellular responses it appeared that apoptotic cells were mostly distributed in ductal or periportal cells in liver of feeding rats unlikely in liver of Starving rots which showed no difference in zonal distribution. In salivary gland apoptotic cells in fed rats were highly induced in intercalating and ductal cell population than in acinar cell population although unlikely in starved rats. This study showed the value of apoptosis using the detection system of TUNEL for evaluating cellular damage after radiation injury and the diminished effect of starvation on cell damage after ionizing irradiation.
The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of various dietary conditions on external morphometric traits, and sectioned morphometric traits in the cultured cyprinid loach, (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) for 28 days. For the fed group there was an increase in body weight, standard length, and morphometric dimensions of the head and body cavity regions compared with the starved and initial groups. Sectioned morphometric trait analysis revealed that relative to the starved group, the fed group had greater body circumference, cross-sectional area, and total height (P<0.05). Our results provide data on external and sectioned morphometric changes under starvation conditions, and can be used as a guide to assist in the regulation and scheduling of feeding, and as indices of the nutritional status of cyprinid loach.
The effects of alternate-week feeding strategies on growth and feed efficiency ratio of juvenile Nile tilapia were investigated in a recirculating aquaculture system. Twenty fish initially weighing 25.5 g were randomly distributed into each of 18 tanks to conduct three replicates for each of six different feeding strategies. Weight gain of fish in the control that were fed daily for 6-week feeding trial was significantly higher than those of fish subjected to various alternate-week feeding regimes. Weight gain of fish that were starved for 3 weeks and then fed daily for 3 weeks (3WS+3WF) was not significantly different from that of fish, starved and fed daily for alternate 1-week period during the trial (1WS+1WF), but was significantly higher than those of fish starved for 2 weeks, and fed for 2 weeks (2WS+2WF); fish starved for 4 weeks and fed for 2 weeks (4WS+2WF); and fish fed for 5 weeks and fed for 1 week (5WS+1WF.) The amount of feed supplied to fish in the groups of 1WS+1WF and 3WS+3WF was significantly lower than that fed to fish in the control group, but significantly higher than the amount feed supplied to fish in the other three groups. Feed efficiency ratio for fish in the control group did not differ from that for fish in the groups of 1WS+1WF, 2WS+2WF and 3WS+3WF, but was significantly higher than that for fish in the groups of 4WS+2WF and 5WS+1WF. In conclusion, juvenile Nile tilapia that were subject to starvation for 1 to 5 weeks did not exhibit compensatory growth sufficient to attain the same weight as fish fed daily for 6 weeks. In addition, fish subjected to starvation exhibited low feed efficiency ratio compared to fish fed daily, which were probably attributable to poor weight gain.
We determined the effects of starvation, water temperature, and water flow on the onset of metamorphosis in leptocephali of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica. Leptocephali larger than 50 mm (ca. 200 days old) were reared in 10-L tanks under different feeding, water temperature, and water flow regimes. Fasted leptocephali metamorphosed earlier and faster than did the fed ones. Metamorphosis was faster in the high water flow tank (1.2 L/min) than in the tank with flow at 0.6 L/min. The duration of metamorphosis was slightly shorter at $26^{\circ}C$ than at $23^{\circ}C$. To conclude, starvation induced the metamorphosis of artificially produced leptocephali larger than 50 mm TL. Increased water flow and water temperature both appear to induce and shorten metamorphosis.
To determine optimal conditions for measurement of the clearance rate in feeding experiment of an intertidal bivalve Glauconome chinensis, effects of starvation, extent of mixing at subsampling, and initial prey concentration were assessed. Experiments were conducted separately for each condition with different treatments. Two-way ANOVAs showed that there were significant differences in clearance rates among different starvation periods (p<0.001), extents of mixing (p = 0.005), and prey concentrations (p < 0.001). Starvation for 1 or 2 days gave rise to 2 to 3-fold increase in the clearance rate. After starvation for 5 days, the clearance rate decreased seriously, implying loss of physiological status. It is suggested that animals should be fed during acclimation. The differences of the clearance rates between gentle and vigorous mixings were significant, but the differences were smaller than that among different incubation times. It was found that vigorous mixing is not necessary. The effect of initial prey concentration was great. However, optimal prey concentration could not be determined at any fixed value. Experiments with multiple concentrations of algal prey are recommended. Optimal incubation time for measurement of the clearance rate of G. chinensis was determined to be 2-4 hours.
