  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the eating behavior and food preference of preschool children in day care facilities. Subjects of this study were 192 young children who lived in Sungnam city, Gyeonggi-Do. The results are summarized as follows: The parents reported that 34% of the children ate 'unbalanced diet'. And 16% of the children ate small portions of food. The parents picked up several reasons for their children's 'unbalanced diet' such as 'dislike of the tastes(29.2%), 'texture in the mouth(28.6%)', 'smell of food(18.2%)' Fifty-six percent of parents took 'to change the cooking methods' as the best way to make their children have good eating habits in their home. The highest score of preference among the children was noodles with bean sauce and kimbab for staple food, stews seaweed soup for soups and stews, bulgogi and fried chicken for side dish. The young children's preference score fur side dish made with meats were higher than made with vegetables. This study made a suggestion to parents of children ages 4 to 6 and to teachers in preschool that they prepare for foods made with vegetables.

  • The potato has been used as a part of key staple foods in Korea. Recently, the demand for the potato tends to increase due to its nutritional Quality, and the Quantity of imports has rapidly been increasing. Contamination of seed potato by pathogens especially could cause a severe reduction of total production. In order to solve the problem, Korea Research Insistute of Bioscience and Biotechnology(KBIBB) developed the new commodity called a "potato microtuber". Before its production and distribution, researches on new commodity should be undertaken in many aspects, especially in terms of economic aspects. The main objectives of this study are to measure the economic value of the potato microtubers and to forecast its spreading effects and to examine the Contingent Valuation Method(CVM) could be accepted in the economic analysis for a new agricultural product, here in potato microtubers. Through the regression results, the consumer behavior analysis had performed for potential users of potato microtubers, and through the demand function derived by the consequence of functional relationship, consumer's surplus was estimated.

  • This paper investigated the applicable possibility of PTT and wool staple fibers to the air vortex system as high quality yarns for a high emotional and comfort garment. It was found that the tactile hand of vortex yarn knitted fabrics was harsher than ring and compact yarns knitted fabrics. It was observed that formability and sewability of air vortex yarn knitted fabrics seemed worse than ring and compact yarns due to low tensile and compressional resilience and high bending and shear hysteresis of air vortex yarn knitted fabrics. It revealed that wicking and drying rates of air vortex yarn knitted fabric were better than ring and compact yarns; in addition, the heat keepability of vortex yarn knitted fabric was higher than ring and compact yarns due to low thermal conductivity and max heat flow rate ($Q_{max}$). Any difference of thermal shrinkage between air vortex and ring yarn knitted fabrics was not shown, but pilling characteristic of air vortex yarn knitted fabric was superior. However, it was shown that wicking, drying, thermal property and pilling characteristics of air vortex yarn knitted fabric were superior due to air vortex yarn structure with parallel fibers in the core part and periodical and fasciated twists in the sheath part of the yarns.

  • Rice is a staple food source in Asian countries. In paddy field, rice plant can take up toxic elements through its roots from contaminated soils, and its leaves and grain can absorb the toxic elements deposited on the soil surface. A totla of 40 soil and polished rice samples were collected around four abandoned metal mines in Korea and analyzed for As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The average contents of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in rice grain grown on the contaminated soils were 0.247, 0.174, 4.694, 0.804 and 16.78 mg/kg, respectively. These levels are higher than worldwide average concentrations. Assuming the rice consumption of 169 g/day by overall households in Korea, the estimated daily intakes from the rices were found to be 33, 48, and 63% for As, Cd, and Pb, respectively, of the acceptable daily intake (ADI) suggested by the FAO/WHO Joint Food Additive and Contaminants Committee.

  • According to the data published in 1990s on the intake of dietary fiber(DF) of Korean, DF intake of Korean has been gradually decreasing in the last two decades. Mean daily intake of DF in 1990s is estimated to be in the rage of 17-20g per capita and over seventy five percent of the subjects examined appeared to consume DF less than 20g per day. The major food sources of Df in Korean diet include cereals, vegetables, fruits, seaweeds and seasonings. The present level of DF intake of Korean is lower than the tentatively recommended minimum intake of DF. It is predicted that, if the present trend of change on food consumption pattern is maintained, the gradual increases in the incidence of chronic degenerative diseases will be continuing. Therefore, the beneficial effects of DF on health care and disease control should be emphasized through the nutritional education and high level consumption of DF needs to be strongly recommended in the dietary guideline. In order to raise the daily consumption of DF, more whole grain cereals need to be used as a part of staple and more frequent intake of legumes and seaweeds is required as well as the development of high-fiber diet recipes and natural high-fiber products.

  • An ecological survey of early childhood nutrition and parasitic infection was undertaken among 102 children aged 3 to 6 atteending the three day care centers of Hongcheon county Kangwon province between June and July 1987. In frequency of skipping meal 35.1% of subjects often skipped breakfast ; 3.1% skipped breakfast every day. About 53% of those children complained of having poor appetite at breakfast. The percentage of children having meals with all the family members was 94.8% for breakfast and 97.9% for evening meal. In eatinf behavior 20.6% of the subjects had meals while watching TV; 21.6% moved around during a meal ; 22.1% hadmeal talking loudly ; 35.1% had quiet meal. Approximately 63% of children used chopsticks and others used fork or spork. Concerning of dietary staple boiled rice was dominant. The diversity of food selection by those children was so linmited that simply only one or two items of side-dishes and /or souop were taken at home. Subjects liked yorgurt milk lavers fruits and Ramyun in contrast to the loweest preference for fermented fist aroma-tic vegetables butter and margarine. The positive prevealence of parasitic infection was 35.5% including than that observed in any other rural areas. Incidence of Fibricola seoulenis was caused by local habit of eating hibernate frogs without enough boiling.

  • With the increasing trend of popularity of websites and social networking sites, it is quite evident that companies need to take cautionary measures in protecting the reputations with respect to company and brands. In this process, every company should indulge in enhancing their company and brand image through websites and social networking sites that fortify the bonding nature among them. The always-on nature of websites and social networking sites has contributed to their phenomenal marketing power and altered the balance of power between consumers and firms. Websites and social networks are used by hundreds of millions of people to communicate about a huge range of topics, including personal interests, activities, social events and even public issues. The paper explores a case study of the Ritz-Carlton hotel for their marketing strategy and organizational use of their website and social media in communicating with their customers. Even for the normal luxury traveler who would not have previously used the Internet to research a hotel or make a reservation, ritzcarlton.com is making it possible for them to do so in a sense of the luxury and typical Ritz-Carlton style. It seems to be a staple of the company for years to come.

  • Yield productivity of staple crops must be increased at least 50% by 2050, in order to feed the world population which is expected to reach 90 billions. Photosynthetic carbon assimilation and carbohydrate metabolism leading to the production of starch would be the final frontier to quest for new sources of technology enabling such a drastic increase of crop productivity. In this review, attempts to genetically engineer plant photosynthetic carbon reduction cycle and metabolic pathways to increase starch production are introduced.
