  • In this paper, the impact of a vernacular pozzolanic kaolinite mine on concrete alkali-silica reaction and strength has been evaluated. For making the samples, kaolinite powder with various levels has been used in the quality specification test of aggregates based on the ASTM C1260 standard in order to investigate the effect of kaolinite particles on reducing the reaction of the mortar bars. The compressive strength, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) experiments have been performed on concrete specimens. The obtained results show that addition of kaolinite powder to concrete will cause a pozzolanic reaction and decrease the permeability of concrete samples comparing to the reference concrete specimen. Further, various machine learning methods have been used to predict ASR-induced expansion per different amounts of kaolinite. In the process of modeling methods, optimal method is considered to have the lowest mean square error (MSE) simultaneous to having the highest correlation coefficient (R). Therefore, to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed model, the results of the support vector machine (SVM) method were compared with the decision tree method, regression analysis and neural network algorithm. The results of comparison of forecasting tools showed that support vector machines have outperformed the results of other methods. Therefore, the support vector machine method can be mentioned as an effective approach to predict ASR-induced expansion.

  • Steel and concrete composite structures are commonly applied in multi-story buildings as they maximise the material strength through composite action. Despite the popularity of employing a trapezoidal deck slab, limited experimental data are available under elevated temperatures. The behaviour of the headed shear stud embedded in a transverse trapezoidal deck and solid slab was investigated at both ambient and fire conditions. Twelve push-out tests were conducted according to the ISO 834 standard fire utilising a customised electric furnace. A stud shearing failure was observed in the solid slab specimen, whereas the failure mode was changed from a concrete-dominated failure to the stud shearing in the transverse deck specimen with an increase in temperature. Comparisons between the experimental observations and design requirements are presented. The Eurocode design guidance on the transverse deck slab gives a highly conservative estimate for shear resistance. A new design formula was proposed to determine the capacity of the shear connection regardless of the slab type when the stud shearing occurs at high temperatures.

  • When a fire occurs, the concrete structure's strength decreases by the increasing temperature under the fire in certain condition of constant load. And, the ratio of the axial force is changed by such decreased strength so that the structure is deformed. In this research, considering such case, we have conducted an actual fire test for the concrete lining with constant loading condition and various fire conditions. The specimen adopts the shape condition for small practical specimen defined by the EFNARC and we used 24MPa, 40MPa and 50MPa to analyze the thermal properties by the strength. The ratio of loading is imposed by a certain loading condition based on 20% and 40% of the sectional stress in concrete and MHC Fire is selected to realize the thermal impact of the concrete by rapid increasing temperature. As the result of the experiment, in the same ratio of loading, the 50MPa specimen shows more cracks and spalling as time goes on. The area damaged by the fire, according to the functional criteria of the concrete lining under the fire in ITA, does not satisfy with the standard in lack of 50mm depth from the heating surface at total 200mm lining.

  • The method of concrete mix design used in this study aims to achieve the identical specified design strength, applying different types and replacement ratio of mineral admixtures and afterwards, fire tests were conducted using the standard time-temperature curve specified in the ASTM E119 to identify the influences of the types of mineral admixtures on the fire resistance performance of high strength concrete(HSC). The least spalling was observed in the test specimen containing blast furnace slag as a partial replacement of cement, while the most significant spalling phenomena were observed in the blast furnace slag test specimen that silica-fume was added in. In particular, the reasonable volume of spalling was observed when solely replaced by silica fume. However, the influence of the cement replacement by silica fume and blast furnace slag on the increases of spalling can be explained through blocked pores by the fine particles of silica fume, leading to decreases in permeability.

  • The performance of concrete structure decreases with change in time and the external environment. In order to reinforce the structure, the research about new material development and application of newly developed materials are widely conducted. In the case of composite FRP, it received good attention in the academia due to its high intensity-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistency as well as good workability. When applying at the construction field, however, the utilization of FRP did not increase as much due to lack of reliability and design standard. Current study investigated the material characteristics during the temperature change at high temperature and the structural behavior from restraint effect for GFRP reinforcing materials. Two experimental variables were set in this study: GFRP reinforcements due to tensile properties of temperature and restraint compression effects. Three concrete specimen were selected for each set temperatures. For this reason, as a variable to experiment with the effects confined compression concrete members value and tensile properties with temperature reinforcement GFRP, experiment produced three pieces each for each set temperature, the concrete specimen, which is confined in the GFRP was selected each I did. For the temperature change during the experiment, the concrete specimen were mounted in order to expose to experimental high temperature for certain period of time. For compression performance evaluation, reinforcement effect from horizontal constraint of the fiber were measured using an Universal Material Testing Machine (UTM). Finally, this study revealed that the binding characteristics of GFRP materials from temperature change decreased. Also, this study showed that the maximum compression intensity decreased as the temperature increased up to $150^{\circ}C$ in the constraints ability of the GFRP reinforcements during the horizontal constraint of concrete.

  • In this paper, the influence of adding multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on the pull behavior of steel and GFRP bars in ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) was examined experimentally and numerically. For numerical analysis, 3D nonlinear finite element modeling (FEM) with the help of ABAQUS software was used. Mechanical properties of the specimens, including Young's modulus, tensile strength and compressive strength, were extracted from the experimental results of the tests performed on standard cube specimens and for different values of weight percent of MWCNTs. In order to consider more realistic assumptions, the bond between concrete and bar was simulated using adhesive surfaces and Cohesive Zone Model (CZM), whose parameters were obtained by calibrating the results of the finite element model with the experimental results of pullout tests. The accuracy of the results of the finite element model was proved with conducting the pullout experimental test which showed high accuracy of the proposed model. Then, the effect of different parameters such as the material of bar, the diameter of the bar, as well as the weight percent of MWCNT on the bond behavior of bar and UHPC were studied. The results suggest that modifying UHPC with MWCNT improves bond strength between concrete and bar. In MWCNT per 0.01 and 0.3 wt% of MWCNT, the maximum pullout strength of steel bar with a diameter of 16 mm increased by 52.5% and 58.7% compared to the control specimen (UHPC without nanoparticle). Also, this increase in GFRP bars with a diameter of 16 mm was 34.3% and 45%.

  • The development and maintenance of a sound bond are essential requirements of concrete repair and replacement. The bond property of a overlay to its substrate concrete during the lifetime is one of the most important performance requirements which should be quantified. A standard or a verified bond strength measurement method is required at field for screening, selecting materials and quality control for overlay or repair materials, but no test method has been adopted as a standard. In this study, a concrete pull off bond strength measurement method for field application is proposed and evaluated. This study compares the splitting tensile test, slant shear test, nipple pipe direct tensile test, flexural adhesion test, briquette tensile test, jumbo nail pull-out test and core pull-off test with their test procedures. From these comparison and investigation, core pull-off test is selected as a main topic of this study because of it's suitability for in situ testing, simplicities in field application and clearness at interface boundary condition. Thus, the proposed core pull off test is evaluated to be the most appropriate method for field application in a simple manner. The fracture surface and fracture mode could be easily determined by visual observation of failure surface of the field specimen. The core pull off test was found to be sensitive to surface condition and latex contents at latex modified concrete.

  • Recently, in field of bridge construction, modular technology has been studied to reduce construction period. However, main stream of the study is limited to the pier, girder and deck of bridge, which are huge or main members. Studies on incidental facilities like concrete barrier is out of sight. Thus, in this study, connection system of concrete barrier was developed to apply to modular bridges and static experiment was performed in order to verify structural capability of proposed system. Variables of experiment are composed of bolt direction such as vertical and horizontal. The experimentation due to the designed variables was conducted by comparison with a standard concrete barrier, which is a traditional barrier. As a result, vertical joint way of the bolt showed nearly identical structural performance and healthy to standard specimen's. it can be applied to modular bridges.

  • Recently, Appendix A of ACI 318∼02 Code introduced the Strut-and-Tie Model(STM) procedure in shear design of deep flexural members. The STM procedure is widely used in the design of concrete regions where the distribution of longitudinal strains is significantly nonlinear, such as deep beams, beams with large openings, corbels, and dapped-end beams. Experimental study included five high-strength reinforced concrete deep beams with different detailing schemes for the horizontal and vertical reinforcement. The specimens were designed as simply supported beams subjected to concentrated loads on the top face and supported on the bottom face. At failure, all specimen exhibited primary diagonal crack running from the support region to the point load. Specimens which had mechanical anchorages(terminators) gives better representation of the load-carrying mechanism than the specimen had standard 90-degree anchorage at failure in deep flexural members. Based on the test results, shear design procedures contained in the ACI 318-99 Code, Appendix A of the ACI 318-02 Code, CSA A23.3-94 Code and CIRIA Guide-2 were evaluated. The Shear design of ACI 318-99 Code, Appendix A of the ACI 318-02 Code and CIRIA Guide-2 shown to be conservative predictions from 10% to 36% in the shear strength of the single-span deep beam which was tested. ACI 318-99 Code was the lowest standard deviation.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the reinforced concrete beam using hybrid retrofitting with two materials (groove and embedding FRP rod, CFRP sheet) in existing reinforced concrete buildings. Seven reinforced concrete beams, retrofitted groove and embedding FRP rod (NER series) and groove and embedding FRP rod with CFRP sheet (NERL series), and standard specimen (NBS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Design parameters of test specimens are the amount of groove and embedding FRP rod and lapping CFRP sheet. Test results showed that the maximum load carrying capacity of specimens with groove and embedding FRP rod and groove and embedding FRP rod with CFRP sheet (NERL series) were increased the by 12~46% and 22~77% respectively in comparison with the standard specimen NBS. Test specimens NER series were failed with the adhesion slip and concrete cover separation. And test specimens NERL series were failed with the adhesion slip due to the confining effect of lapping CFRP sheet.
