Although the existing NTSC TV standard is highly sophisticated, it has some inherent problems. One of these problems is interlaced scanning, which yields a poor result in terms of the vertical picture resolution. In this paper, we have proposed the interlace to progressive conversion method using the pseudomedian filters. Since the proposed method is processed in the intra field is different from the conventional method using the median filter, it is implemented without using field memory and its performance is same or nearly the same as the corresponding performance of the median filtering method. The performance of the proposed method has been compared with that of conventional methods through computer simulation.

This paper describes an efficient framework for the extraction of a brain tumor from magnetic resonance (MR) images. Before the segmentation process, a median filter is used to filter the image. Then, the morphological gradient is computed and added to the filtered image for intensity enhancement. After the enhancement process, the thresholding value is calculated using the mean and the standard deviation of the image. This thresholding value is used to binarize the image followed by the morphological operations. Moreover, the combination of these morphological operations allows to compute the local thresholding image supported by a flood-fill algorithm and a pixel replacement process to extract the tumor from the brain. Thus, this framework provides a new source of evidence in the field of segmentation that the specialist can aggregate with the segmentation results in order to soften his/her own decision.

As society has developed rapidly toward a highly advanced digital information age, a multimedia communication service for acquisition, transmission and storage of image data as well as voice has being commercialized. However, image data is always corrupted by various noises during image processing, so researches for removing noises have been continued until now. In this paper, in order to remove impulse noise we proposed modified adaptive switching median filter that consists of two stages: noise detection and noise removal. Proposed algorithm only processes noise pixels and these noise pixels are replaced by filter output, so proposed algorithm performs well not only removes noise but also preserves edge information. Also we compare existing methods using PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) as the standard of judgement of improvement effect and choose conventional algorithms to compare with our proposed method.

In this paper, we proposed a nonlinear synthesis filter for noise reduction to reduce the effects of Gaussian noise and impulse noise. When the centralization of the local mask is judged to be Gaussian noise by the noise judgment, the weight value of the weight filter are applied differently according to the spatial weight filter and the pixel change by using the sample variance in the local mask. And if it is determined as the impulse noise, we proposed an algorithm that applies different weights of local histogram weight filter and standard median filter according to noise density of mask. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed filter algorithm, we used PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) and compared existing methods and proposed filter algorithm in the mixed noise environment with Gaussian noise, impulsive noise, and two noises mixed.

In digital images, the addition due to noise occurs in the process of obtaining, saving, and transmitting. For examples of noise, there are salt and pepper noise, Gaussian noise, and composition noise where various noises are mixed. Existing filters have insufficient noise removal characteristics because it uses single filters in composite noise environment. Therefore the study suggested a switching filter that processes with special weighted value and median filter according to local mask salt and pepper noise density when central pixel is damaged by salt and pepper noise, and processes by applying weighted values differently according to standard deviation of local mask when damaged by Gaussian noise.

Objective: To investigate the accuracy of the Agatston score obtained with the ultra-high-pitch (UHP) acquisition mode using tin-filter spectral shaping (Sn150 kVp) and a kVp-independent reconstruction algorithm to reduce the radiation dose. Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 114 patients (mean ± standard deviation, 60.3 ± 9.8 years; 74 male) who underwent a standard 120 kVp scan and an additional UHP Sn150 kVp scan for coronary artery calcification scoring (CACS). These two datasets were reconstructed using a standard reconstruction algorithm (120 kVp + Qr36d, protocol A; Sn150 kVp + Qr36d, protocol B). In addition, the Sn150 kVp dataset was reconstructed using a kVp-independent reconstruction algorithm (Sn150 kVp + Sa36d, protocol C). The Agatston scores for protocols A and B, as well as protocols A and C, were compared. The agreement between the scores was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Bland-Altman plot. The radiation doses for the 120 kVp and UHP Sn150 kVp acquisition modes were also compared. Results: No significant difference was observed in the Agatston score for protocols A (median, 63.05; interquartile range [IQR], 0-232.28) and C (median, 60.25; IQR, 0-195.20) (p = 0.060). The mean difference in the Agatston score for protocols A and C was relatively small (-7.82) and with the limits of agreement from -65.20 to 49.56 (ICC = 0.997). The Agatston score for protocol B (median, 34.85; IQR, 0-120.73) was significantly underestimated compared with that for protocol A (p < 0.001). The UHP Sn150 kVp mode facilitated an effective radiation dose reduction by approximately 30% (0.58 vs. 0.82 mSv, p < 0.001) from that associated with the standard 120 kVp mode. Conclusion: The Agatston scores for CACS with the UHP Sn150 kVp mode with a kVp-independent reconstruction algorithm and the standard 120 kVp demonstrated excellent agreement with a small mean difference and narrow agreement limits. The UHP Sn150 kVp mode allowed a significant reduction in the radiation dose.
Spectroscopic measurement method based on visible and near-infrared wavelengths was prominent technology for rapid and non-destructive evaluation of internal quality of fruits. Reflectance measurement was performed to evaluate firmness, soluble solid content, and acid content of truss tomatoes by hyperspectral reflectance imaging system. The Vis/NIR reflectance spectra was acquired from truss tomatoes sorted by 6 ripening stages. The multivariable analysis based on partial least square (PLS) was used to develop regression models with several preporcessing methods, such as smoothing, normalization, multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), and standard normal variate (SNV). The best model was selected in terms of coefficient of determination of calibration ($R_c^2$) and full cross validation ($R_{cv}^2$), and root mean standard error of calibration (RMSEC) and full cross validation (RMSECV). The results of selected models were 0.8976 ($R_p^2$), 6.0207 kgf (RMSEP) with gaussian filter of smoothing, 0.8379 ($R_p^2$), $0.2674^{\circ}Bx$ (RMSEP) with the mean of normalization, and 0.7779 ($R_p^2$), 0.1033% (RMSEP) with median filter of smoothing for firmness, soluble solid content (SSC), and acid content, respectively. Results show that Vis / NIR hyperspectral reflectance imaging technique has good potential for the measurement of internal quality of truss tomato.

Currently, with the rapid development of the digital age, multimedia-related image devices become popular. However image deterioration is generated by multiple causes during the transmission process, with typical example of salt and pepper noise. When the noise of high density is added, existing methods are deteriorated in the characteristics of removal noise. After judging the noise condition to remove the salt and pepper noise, if the center pixel is the non-noise pixel, it is replaced with the original pixel. On the other hand, if it is the noise pixel, algorithm is suggested by the study, where the histogram of the corrupted image and the median filters are used. And for objective judgment, the proposed algorithm was compared with existing methods and PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) was used as judgment standard. As the result of the simulation, The proposed algorithm shows a high PSNR of 32.57[dB] for Lena images that had been damaged of a high density salt and pepper noise(P=60%), Compared to the existing CWMF, A-TMF and AWMF there were improvements by 21.67[dB], 18.07[dB], and 20.13[dB], respectively.

In image signal processing, image signal is corrupted by various noises and caused the degradation phenomenon. And Images often corrupted by AWGN(additive white gaussian noise) and impulse noise which called mixed noise. In this paper, the algorithm is proposed to remove mixed noise while keeping edge information. The proposed algorithm first classifies the noise type, if the classify result is AWGN, then the mean of the output after using self-adaptive weighted mean filter and median value will be the outfiltering value. And if the noise type is impulse noise, then the noise is removed by a modified nonlinear filter. Also we compare existing methods through the simulation and using PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) as the standard of judgement of improvement effect. The result of computer simulation on test images indicates that the proposed method is superior to traditional filtering algorithms.
Objective of the study was to compare reflectance spectrum in the blade and the vein parts of cabbage and kale leaves. A total 6 cabbage and kale leaves were taken from a plant factory in Chungnam National University, Korea. Spectra data were collected with a UV/VIS/NIR spectrometer (model: USB2000, Ocean Optics, FL, USA) in the wavelength region of 190 - 1130 nm. Median filter smoothing method was selected to preprocess the obtained spectra data. We computed reflectance difference by subtraction of averaged spectrum from individual spectrum. To estimate correlation at different parts of cabbage and kale leaves, cross - correlation method was used. Differences between cabbage and kale leaves are clearly manifested in the green, red and near - infrared ranges. The percent reflectance of cabbage leaves in the NIR wavelength band was higher than that of kale leaves. Reflectance in the blade part was higher than in the vein part by 18%. Reflectance difference in the different parts of cabbage and kale leaves were clear in all of the wavelength bands. Standard deviation of reflectance difference in the vein part was greater for kale, while the value in the blade part was greater for cabbage leaves. Standard deviation of cross - correlation increased from 0.092 in the first sensor (UV/VIS) and 0.007 in the second sensor (NIR) to 0.099 and 0.015, respectively.
