This study was conducted to characterize the gait of a person climbing or descending the stairs. Using our motion analysis system (Vicon 370), gait patterns of ten healthy females (18.8 - 19.6 yrs. old) were measured 1) when a subject tip-toed the stairs, 2) when a subject climbs the stairs with the whole foot, and 3) when a subject went down the stair, respectively. The results of each cases were compared with the data for the level walking collected from 21 healthy females in the previous studies. The stairway gait data can be used as a useful reference in the design of artificial limbs for the lower-limb amputee.

This paper proposes an algorithm for correcting indirect situations resulting from the wheelchair moving the stairs with wheel-type caterpillar and seat position variable. For analyzing the Yawing movement model, the change of Yaw value was estimated using Roll, Pitch, and Yaw in the driving environment, and it was used as a control variable and the information of the wheel drive controller. The verification confirmed the correction of about 10° of Yawing movement within about 7 seconds. It was confirmed that the angular velocity was reduced by 47.5% in seat position change.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of combined exercise on the change of postural control, functional status in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Methods : The subjects were consisted of 24 women patients fifties and sixties with knee osteoarthritis. Each group had a exercise for 30 minutes per day and three times a week during 8 weeks period. Was used to measure muscular function(60, $180^{\circ}/sec$), postural control. functional capacity(15 M walking test, Rising form a chair test, stair climbing and descending test) and the functional state of a joint(WOMAC). Results: This study results in following 1. In case of muscular function have significantly increased in both groups. 2. There was no significant difference in the postural control of the bilateral between two groups. However, the postural control of a isokinetic exercise program group showed a significant difference in the bilateral side(overall, $M{\cdot}L$ stability index). Especially, the change of postural control in the isokinetic plus postural control exercise program group decreased more significantly in the bilateral(overall, $A{\cdot}P$ stability index). 3 It was significantly decreased in climbing and descending the stairs, and rising from the chair, although functional capacity decreased in lam walking in both groups. 4. The functional state of a joint(WOMAC) showed a significant decrease in both groups. Conclusion : In order to improve the functional status and postural control of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, performing exercise programming of isokinetic plus balance will be more effective than the exercise program composed of only the isokinetic exercise program.

In this paper, we propose a parametric model for analyzing the motion information obtained from the acceleration sensors to measure the activity of the human body. The motion of the upper body and the lower body does not occur at the same time, and the motion analysis method using a single motion sensor involves a lot of errors. In this study, the 3-axis accelerometer is attached to the arms and legs, the body's activity data are measured, the momentum of the arms and legs are calculated for each channel, and the linear predictive coefficient is obtained for each channel. The periodicity of the upper body and the lower body is determined by analyzing the correlation between the channels. The linear predictive coefficient and the periodic value are used as data to measure the type of exercise and the amount of exercise. In the proposed method, we measured four types of movements such as walking, stair climbing, slow hill climbing, and fast hill descending. In order to verify the usefulness of the parameters, the recognition results are presented using the linear predictive coefficient and the periodic value for each motion as the neural network input.
[Purpose] This preliminary study aimed to develop a regression model to estimate the non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) of Korean adults using various easy-to-measure dependent variables. [Methods] NEAT was measured in 71 healthy adults (male n = 29; female n = 42). Statistical analysis was performed to develop a NEAT estimation regression model using the stepwise regression method. [Results] We confirmed that ageA, weightB, heart rate (HR)_averageC, weight × HR_averageD, weight × HR_sumE, systolic blood pressure (SBP) × HR_restF, fat mass ÷ height2G, gender × HR_averageH, and gender × weight × HR_sumI were important variables in various NEAT activity regression models. There was no significant difference between the measured NEAT values obtained using a metabolic gas analyzer and the predicted NEAT. [Conclusion] This preliminary study developed a regression model to estimate the NEAT in healthy Korean adults. The regression model was as follows: sitting = 1.431 - 0.013 × (A) + 0.00014 × (D) - 0.00005 × (F) + 0.006 × (H); leg jiggling = 1.102 - 0.011 × (A) + 0.013 × (B) + 0.005 × (H); standing = 1.713 - 0.013 × (A) + 0.0000017 × (I); 4.5 km/h walking = 0.864 + 0.035 × (B) + 0.0000041 × (E); 6.0 km/h walking = 4.029 - 0.024 × (C) + 0.00071 × (D); climbing up 1 stair = 1.308 - 0.016 × (A) + 0.00035 × (D) - 0.000085 × (F) - 0.098 × (G); and climbing up 2 stairs = 1.442 - 0.023 × (A) - 0.000093 × (F) - 0.121 × (G) + 0.0000624 × (E).

In cementless total hip replacement(THR), an initial stability of the femoral component is important to long term fixation of femoral stem. The intial stability has close relationship with the relative displacement of prosthessis and sponge bone at the proximal of femur. After implantation of the proshesis, the surrounding bone is partially shielded from load carrying and starts to resorb. Stress shielding is the cause of the loss of proximal bone. Assessing stress distribution of femur is important to predict stress shielding. The initial stability and the stress shielding were investigated for two loading conditions approximating a single leg stance and a stair climbing. Three types of stems were studied by the finite element method to analyze the biomechanical effects of distal filling of cementless femoral stems. Three types of stems empolyed are a distal filling stem, a distal flexible stem, and a distal tapered stem.

This paper reviews trends of the rehabilitation welfare devices on the basis of products and markets. Latest assistive devices tend to have a fold function. Auxiliary power assist module has been added. The completion of products has been improved. The folding function has strong relationship with portability. Specifically, various mobility devices, including foldable devices, are associated with enhanced portability. Powered auxiliary wheels and upper extremity supporting modules have entered the market. The leading-edge technology like Segway's control technology applies to two-wheel wheelchairs. The brand- new technology, lower extremity robotic exoskeleton, applies to markets. Standing wheelchairs, ramps, stair climbing assistive devices becomes more common. In addition, a combination of a variety of smart devices is being promoted to the classical assistive devices' part. Rehabilitation welfare devices can be more valuable due to nice industrial design, improved materials, and processing technology.

This study shows a system identification method of a balancing loading device for a stair climbing delivery robot. The balancing loading device is designed as a 2-axes gimbal structure and is interpreted as two independent pendulum structures for simplifying. The loading device's properties such as mass, moment of inertia, and position of the center of gravity are changeable for luggage. The system identification process of the loading device is required, and the controller should be optimized for the system in real-time. In this study, the system identification method is based on least squares method to estimate the unknown parameters of the loading device's dynamic equation. It estimates the unknown parameters by calculating them that minimize the error function between the real system's motion and the estimated system's motion. This study improves the accuracy of parameter estimation using a null space solution. The null space solution can produce the correct parameters by adjusting the parameter's relative sizes. The proposed system identification method is verified by the simulation to determine how close the estimated unknown parameters are to the real parameters.
