  • In this paper we are trying to explain the effect of temperature on polymer membrane exchange water electrolysis (PEMWE) and polymer membrane exchange fuel cell (PEMFC) simultaneously. A comprehensive studying approach is proposed and applied to a 50Watt PEM fuel cell system in the laboratory. The monitoring process is carried out through wireless LoRa node and gateway network concept. In this experiment, temperature sensor measure the temperature level of electrolyzer, fuel cell stack and $H_2$ storage tank and transmitted the measured value of data to the management control unit (MCU) through the individual node and gateway of each PEMWE and PEMFC. In MCU we can monitor the temperature and its effect on the performance of the fuel cell system and control it to keep the lower heating value to increase the efficiency of the fuel cell system. And we also proposed a mathematical model and operation algorithm for PEMWE and PEMFC. In this model, PEMWE gives higher efficiency at lower heating level where as PEMFC gives higher efficiency at higher heating value. In order to increase the performance of the fuel cell system, we are going to monitor, communicate and control the temperature and pressure of PEMWE and PEMFC by installing these systems in a building of university which is located in the southern part of Korea.

  • One of the most critical issues in sol id oxide fuel cell (SOFC)running on hydrocarbon fuels is the risk of carbon formation from the fuel gas. The simple method to reduce the risk of carbon formation from the reactions is to add steam to the fuel stream, leading to the carbon gasification react ion. However, the addition of steam to fuel is not appropriate for the auxiliary power unit (APU) and potable power generation (PPG) systems due to an increase of complexity and bulkiness. In this regard, many researchers have focused on so-called 'direct methane' operation of SOFC, which works with dry methane without coking. However, coking can be suppressed only by the operation with a high current density, which may be a drawback especially for the APU and PPG systems. The single chamber fuel cell (SC-SOFC) is a novel simplification of the conventional SOFC into which a premixed fuel/air mixture is introduced. It relies on the selectivity of the anode and cathode catalysts to generate a chemical potential gradient across the cell. Moreover it allows compact and seal-free stack design. In this study, we fabricated honeycomb type mixed-gas fuel cell (MGFC) which has advantages of stacking to the axial direction and increasing volume power density. Honeycomb-structured SOFC with four channels was prepared by dry pressing method. Two alternative channels were coated with electrolyte and cathode slurry in order to make cathodic reaction sites. We will discuss that the anode supported honeycomb type cell running on mixed gas condition.

  • The internal resistance of microbial fuel cell (MFC) using stainless steel skein for oxidizing electrode was investigated and the factors affecting the voltage generation were identified. We also investigated the effect of power management system (PMS) on the usability for MFC and the removal efficiency of organic pollutants. The performance of a stack microbial fuel cell connected with (PMS) or PMS+LED was analyzed by the voltage generation and organic matter reduction. The maximum power density of the unit cells was found to be $5.82W/m^3$ at $200{\Omega}$. The maximum current density was $47.53A/m^3$ without power overshoot even under $1{\Omega}$. The ohmic resistance ($R_s$) and the charge transfer resistance ($R_{ct}$) of the oxidation electrode using stainless steel skein electrode, were $0.56{\Omega}$ and $0.02{\Omega}$, respectively. However, the sum of internal resistance for reduction electrode using graphite felts loaded Pt/C catalyst was $6.64{\Omega}$. Also, in order to understand the internal resistance, the current interruption method was used by changing the external resistance as $50{\Omega}$, $300{\Omega}$, $5k{\Omega}$. It has been shown that the ohm resistance ($R_s$) decreased with the external resistance. In the case of a series-connected microbial fuel cell, the reversal phenomenon occurred even though two cells having the similar performance. However, the output of the PMS constantly remained for 20 hours even when voltage reversal occurred. Also the removal ability of organic pollutants (SCOD) was not reduced. As a result of this study, it was found that buffering effect for a certain period of time when the voltage reversal occurred during the operation of the microbial fuel cell did not have a serious effect on the energy loss or the operation of the microbial fuel cell.

  • KIER has been developing the anode-supported flat tubular solid oxide fuel cell unit bundle for the intermediate temperature($700{\sim}800^{\circ}C$) operation. Anode-supported flat tubular cells have Ni/YSZ cermet anode support, 8 moi.% $Y_2O_3$ stabilized $ZrO_2(YSZ)$ thin electrolyte, and cathode multi-layer composed of Sr-doped $LaSrMnO_3(LSM)$, LSM-YSZ composite, and $LaSrCoFeO_3(LSCF)$. The prepared anode-supported flat tubular cell was joined with ferritic stainless steel cap by induction brazing process. Current collection for the cathode was achieved by winding Ag wire and $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSCo)$ paste, while current collection for the anode was achieved by using Ni wire and felt. For making stack, the prepared anode-supported flat tubular cells with effective electrode area of $90\;cm^2$ connected in series with 12 unit bundles, in which unit bundle consists of two cells connected in parallel. The performance of unit bundle in 3% humidified $H_2$ and air at $800^{\circ}C$ shows maximum power density of $0.39\;W/cm^2$ (@ 0.7V). Through these experiments, we obtained basic technology of the anode-supported flat tubular cell and established the proprietary concept of the anode-supported flat tubular cell unit bundle.

  • A compact hydrogen generation device of fuel cell system using chemical hydride storage technique was designed to fit the propulsion device requirement of a small unmanned aerial vehicle(SUAV). For high efficient, compact, and lightweight hydrogen generation control device, the Co-B catalyst hydrogen conversion rate by $NaBH_4$ aqueous solution flux is measured so that the proper amount of Co-B catalyst for maximum hydrogen generation of 100W stack was proposed. A compact hydrogen generation device is controlled by pump's on/off using its own internal pressure and consumes fuel in high efficiency through a dead-end type fuel cell. The fuel cell system has stable operation for a planed flight profile. The system operates up to maximum 7 hours and at least 4 hours for tough flight profiles.

  • In this paper, we first define a total of 64 instructions that are considered to be essential and frequently used, construct a datapath diagram, determine the control sequence using a finite state machine, and implement an 8-bit microcontroller using FPGA in VHDL. In the past, only functional simulation results of a rudimentary microcontroller were reported, the microcontroller lacked interrupt handling capability, or it was not implemented in hardware. We have designed a self-contained 8-bit microcontroller such that it can perform data transfer, addition, and logical operations, as well as stack and external interrupt operations. Following timing simulation of the designed microcontroller, we implemented it in an FPGA and verified its operation successfully. The design and implementation has been done under the Altera MAX+PLUS II integrated development environment using the EP1K50TC144-3 chip. The maximum operating frequency, the total number of logic elements used, and the logic utilization were found to be 9.39 MHz, 2813, and 97%, respectively. The result can be used as a microcontroller IP, and as needs arise, the VHDL code can be modified accordingly.

  • The outbound containers in a container terminal are classified into a few groups by their weights and stacked separately in a yard for easy and efficient handling. In order to maintain the balance of a ship during loading, containers of heavier weight groups should be fetched out of a yard and loaded onto the ship before those of lighter weight groups. However, the weight information used to determine the weight group is usually imprecise. Therefore stacks will actually be filled with mixture of different weight groups and rehandlings are unavoidable during loading operation. This paper presents a method for estimating the number of rehandlings caused by imprecise information and a scheme for generating a simple but efficient slot assignment rule. Experiments have shown that a rule generated by the proposed method can reduce the number of rehandlings by about $20\%$ compared to the traditional slot assignment method which stacks only the containers of the same weight group in a single stack.

  • Most of existing frequent pattern mining methods address time efficiency and greatly rely on the primary memory. However, in the era of big data, the size of real-world databases to mined is exponentially increasing, and hence the primary memory is not sufficient enough to mine for frequent patterns from large real-world data sets. To solve this problem, there are some researches for frequent pattern mining method based on disk, but the processing time compared to the memory based methods took very time consuming. There are some researches to improve scalability of frequent pattern mining, but their processes are very time consuming compare to the memory based methods. In this paper, we present PPFP as a novel disk-based approach for mining frequent itemset from big data; and hence we reduced the main memory size bottleneck. PPFP algorithm is based on FP-growth method which is one of the most popular and efficient frequent pattern mining approaches. The mining with PPFP consists of two setps. (1) Constructing an IFP-tree: After construct FP-tree, we assign index number for each node in FP-tree with novel index numbering method, and then insert the indexed FP-tree (IFP-tree) into disk as IFP-table. (2) Mining frequent patterns with PPFP: Mine frequent patterns by expending patterns using stack based PUSH-POP method (PPFP method). Through this new approach, by using a very small amount of memory for recursive and time consuming operation in mining process, we improved the scalability and time efficiency of the frequent pattern mining. And the reported test results demonstrate them.

  • The purpose of this study was to promote the utilization of wind velocity of kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts for wind power generation in high-rise apartments. The research content can be summarized as follows: 1) Nine high-rise apartments were examined for the installation of kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts located in the pipe shaft (PS) section. After selecting simulation candidates, a simulation was performed with the STAR-CCM+ Ver 5.06 program. 2) Of nine high-rise apartments, seven had kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts, whose cross section was in the range of $0.16m^2{\sim}0.4m^2$. The area ratio between the exhaust ducts and PS section (cross section of exhaust duct/area of PS section ${\times}$ 100) was on average 3.2%. 3) The simulation results were analyzed. As a result, the smaller cross section kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts had, the more advantages there were for increasing exhaust wind velocity. If an out air inlet duct is installed to the old kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts, it will increase exhaust wind velocity by 3.01~3.98m/s and contribute to the proper wind velocity level (3.0m/s). 4) When the simultaneous usage rate between the kitchen and bathroom exhaust fan increased from 20% to 60%, exhaust wind velocity increased. The "entire house holds" condition for exhaust fan operation provided more even exhaust wind velocity than the "some house holds" condition. 5) Exhaust wind velocity increased in the order of amplified (T-3), induced (T-2) and vertical (T-1) top of kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts. Of them, the amplified type (T-3) was under the least influence of external wind velocity and thus the most proper for kitchen and bathroom exhaust duct tops.
