These days, SFCLs are being developed in order to limit fault current. However, the superconducting elements that limit the fault current have such problems as capacity increase and require auxiliary devices including cooling device. If devices that comprise the current power network can withstand fault current for at least one cycle, it is possible to limit the fault current with current limiting elements by bypassing it on the fault line. In this study, the fault current limiter was configured with current transformer, vacuum interrupter, and current limiting element. Through the experience, it was confirmed that the fault current was limited within one cycle. The superconducting element, as a current limiting element, limited the fault current by 80 % within one cycle from fault occurrence, and the passive element limited it more than 95 %. Also, through the comparison between resistance curve and power consumption curve, it was confirmed that the current limiting element using a passive element was more stable than the superconducting element that required capacity increase and other auxiliary devices. It was considered that the FCL proposed in this study could limit fault current stably within one cycle from fault occurrence by using the existing power technologies such as fault current detection and solenoid valve operating circuit.

Mixed finite element formulations for incompressible materials show pressure oscillations or pressure modes in four-node quadrilateral elements. The criterion for the stability in the pressure solution is the so-called Babufka-Brezzi stability condition, and the four-node elements based on mixed variational principles do not appear to satisfy this condition. In this study, a pressure continuity residual based on the pressure discontinuity at element edges is used to study the stabilization of pressure solutions in bilinear displacement-constant pressure four-node quadrilateral elements. It is shown that the pressure solutions, although stable, exhibit sensitivity to the stabilization parameters.

In this paper, the thick-walled laminated, orthotropic as well as bimaterial, composite hollow spheres under impact pressure are analyzed in detail by using the semi-discrete finite element method with the Houbolt time-integration scheme which results in unconditionally stable transient numerical results. Numerical results are obtained by using the self-constructed spherically symmetric (one-dimensional) and axially symmetric (two-dimensional) finite element programs, and compared with the previous solutions by other researchers, being shown some of which are incorrect. The finite element package Nastran is also adopted for numerical comparison.

A numerical method which combines equal-order velocity-pressure formulation originated from SIMPLE algorithm and streamline upwinding method has been developed. To verify the proposed numerical method, we considered the lid-driven cavity flow and backward facing step flow. The trend of convergence history is stable up to the error criterion beyond which the maximum value of error is oscillatory due4 to the round-off error. In the present study, all results were obtained with the single precision calculation up to the given error criterion and it was found to be sufficient for our purpose. The present results were then compared with existing experimental results using laser doppler velocimetry and numerical results using finite difference method and mixed interpolation finite element method. It has been shown that the present method gives accurate results with less memories and execution time than the coventional finite element method.
Sensitivity analysis scheme is developed in the elasto-plastic finite element method with explicit time integration using direct differentiation method. The direct differentiation is concerned with the time integration, constitutive relation, shell element with reduced integration and the contact scheme. Sensitivity analysis results are mainly examined with the highly nonlinear and quasi-static problem with the complicated contact condition. The result shows stable sensitivity especially in the sheet metal forming analysis.
In two dimensional incompressible flows, a preconditioning technique called Hierarchical Iterative Procedure(HIP) has been implemented on a stabilized finite element formulation. The stabilization has been peformed by a modified residual method proposed by Illinca et. al.[3]. The stabilization which is necessary to escape from the LBB constraint renders an equal order formulation. In this paper, we increased the order of interpolation whithin an element up to cubic. The conjugate gradient squared(CGS) method is used for the outer iteration, and the HIP for the preconditioning for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. The hierarchical elements has been used to achieve a higher order accuracy in fluid flow analyses, but a proper efficient iterative procedure for higher order finite element formulation has not been available so far. The numerical results by the present HIP for the lid driven cavity flow showed the present procedure to be stable, very efficient and useful in flow analyses in conjunction with hierarchical elements.

Transient linear elastodynamic problems are numerically analyzed in a time-domain by the Finite Element Method, for which the variational formulation based upon the equations of motion in convolution integral is newly derived. This formulation is implicit and does not include the time derivative terms so that the computation procedure is simple and less assumptions are required comparing to the conventional time-domain dynamic numerical algorithms, being able to get the improved numerical accuracy and stability. That formulation is expanded using the semi-discrete approximation to obtain the finite element equations. In the temporal approximation, the time axis is divided equally and constant and linear time variations are assumed in those intervals. It is found that unconditionally stable numerical results are obtained in case of the constant time variation. Some numerical examples are given to show the versatility of the presented formulation.

Higher order isoparametric elements are usually used in the finite element analysis because they can represent easily the geometric shape of a complex structure ad can improve the solution quality. When these elements are used, the position of internal nodes affects greatly on the solution accuracy. Decreasing of the accuracy related to the position of internal nodes is due to non-conformal mapping often results in an unstable Jacobian value. This paper, in order to remove this difficulty, suggests a modified shape function which can establish conformal mapping between two coordinate systems. Numerical experiments with the proposed shape function show that a stable solution can be obtained without respect to the position of internal nodes, and offer convenience that one can take arbitrarily the position of internal nodes considering only the geometric shape of element boundaries.

In order to show the efficiency and accuracy of an expert drawbead model, finite element simulations of auto-body panel stampings are carried out. For numerical modeling of the drawbead of a panel die, the drawbead restraining force and bead-exit thinning calculated by the expert model are imposed to a node nearest to the drawbead position as a boundary condition, Finite element simulations show that the expert model provides the accurate solution, guarantees the stable convergence, and has the merit in the computation time.

This study is concerned with an application of the boundary element method on the crack problem. The stable and efficient analysis method of two dimensional elastostatic stress intensity factor on the mode I deformations is established from the result o stress analysis for the center cracked plates. In order to precisely analyse, The subelements of quadratic element, singular elements on the crack tip and interface and division into regions are applied to elastic stress. The usefulness of the method has been tested with a center cracked plates, a double edge cracked plate and a single edge cracked plate, and the results have turned out to be fairly satisfactory.
