  • This study is concerned with computerized multi-level substructuring methods and stress analysis of coil springs. The purpose of substructuring methods is to reduce computing time and capacity of computer memory by multiple level reduction of the degrees of freedom in large size problems which are modeled by three dimensional continuum finite elements. In this paper, a super element has been developed for stress analysis of coil springs. The spring super element developed has been examined with tension and torsion simulation of cylindrical bars for demonstrating its validity. The result shows that the super element enhances the computing efficiency while it does not affect the accuracy of the results and it is ready for application to the coil spring analysis.

  • This study was motivated by the purpose of improving the O-Index, currently used to quantify water tasty. The authors first develop the M-Index after normalizing Ca, K, and $SiO_{2}$ concentrations in the spring water, in that the concentrations are subject to their log-normal distributions. The M-Index is then compared with the O-Index based on the results of sensory tests, revealing that sensory tests are correlated with the M-Index much more than the O-Index. Furthermore, the developed index is applied to evaluate water sampled from 53 springs in Korea. It is concluded that water, sampled from five most famous springs, has high values in M-Index. In addition, water, collected from springs that are relatively accessible, contains low values, and thus is expected not to tasty good.

  • The studies were conducted to explore the dffects of growth or survival against various factors and plasmid profiles of 49 Y. enterocolitica isolated from springs water. In the presence of calcium hypochlorite, y. enterocolitica was entirely extinguished by exposure for 33 hours at 0.8 ppm concentration, and was grown up to 7% NaCl, but not at 95 NaCI. Y. enterocolitica was presented optimal growth at pH 7.0 anad 9.0, and not allowth the growth at pH3.0, 5.0 and 11.0. The optimal temperature for growth of Y. enterocolitica was 25$\circ$C and 35$\circ$C, and allowed the growth at refrigerant temperature, 5$\circ$C. Y. enterocolitica was remarkably decreased by exposure for 30 seconds under UV light, and entirely extinguished by exposure for 90 seconds. Therefore, UV light was effective for sterilization of Y. enterocolitica. Fourty-nine strains of Y. enterocolitica were harbor plasmid DNA of approximately 46 Kb molecular weight.

  • An efficient method for designing balancing springs to be used for dynamic balancing of planar mechanisms was studied. In spite of its wide application in the field of balancing problems such as balancing of input torques, clearance effects etc., there have been few efficient ways of determining the specifications of the balancing springs. To improve this problem, a method of approximating the characteristic of linear springs was suggested and its validity was checked through an analysis of errors. Further, through an example of a balancing problem to reduce the fluctuation of input torques of a 4bar mechanism, it was shown that the proposed method of approximation simplifies the design equations and a satisfactory result can be found efficiently.

  • Structural boundary condition is very important as a part of a structural system because it determines the dynamic characteristics of the structure. It is often to experience that experimental measurements of structural dynamic characteristics are somewhat different from the analytical predictions in which idealized boundary conditions are usually assumed. However, real structural boundary conditions are not so ideal; not perfectly clamped, for instance. Thus this paper introduces a new method to determine the non-ideal structural boundary conditions in the frequency domain. In this method, structural boundary conditions are modeled by both extensional (vertical) and torsional elastic springs. The effective springs are then determined from experimental FRFs (frequency response functions) by using the spectral element method (SEM). For a cantilevered beam experiments are conducted to determine the real boundary conditions in terms of effective springs. Dynamic characteristics (analytically predicted) based on identified boundary conditions are found to be much closer to experimental measurements when compared with those based on ideal boundary conditions.

  • This paper proposes two directional bending actator using three link, two shape memory alloys(SMA) of coil-type springs and two guide wires. By the heating of two SMA springs sequentially, the bending and stretching of the actuator is possible. Bending angle, force and repeated bending motion of actuator were measured and characterized. The performance of the actuator has been characterized for the possible application for catheter.

  • Leaf springs are widely used as a major suspension component in many commercial vehicles, such as buses, trucks, etc. They have a complex dynamic behavior due to the geometric nonlinear and the contact mechanism between the leaves. The interface conditions between the leaves play a significant role in the global behavior of the comfort and ride of the vehicle system. The paper concentrates on modeling leaf springs and contact frictions between the leaves using a nonlinear finite element approach. A nonlinear load-displacement hysteresis curve for the leaf spring is simulated and its results are compared with test results.

  • biped robots are expected to robustly traverse terrain with various unknown surfaces. The robot will occasionally encounter the unexpected events in made-for human environments. The slipping is a very real and serious problem in the unexpected events. The robot system must respond to the unexpected slipping after it has occurred and before control is lost. This paper proposes a reflex control method for biped robots to recover from slipage. Computer simulations with the 6-DOF environment model which consists of nonlinear dampers, nonlinear springs, and linear springs, show that the proposed method is effective in preventing fall-down due to slippage.

  • So many springs in the rail road trains have been degeaded by the long time operation. Specially vibrations makes worse the condition of the springs. The performance evaluation technique for the rail road spring was developed. Using integrated handy tools using hydraulic systems, LVDT, and related software, On-line evaluation is possible to check the system integrity.

  • The bending actuator using zigzag type shape memory alloy springs has been fabricated and characterized. The small sized actuator with outer diameter of 3.0mm and inner diameter of 2.0mm could be implemented because zigzag type spring has advantages for thin wall type actuator over the coil type spring. The measured characteristics of the fabricated bending actuator show the possibility of practical application to micro active bending catheter.
