This study is concerned about the process capability index in single process. Previous process capability indices have been developed for the consistency with the nonconforming rate due to the process target value and skewness. These indices calculate the process capability by measuring one spot in an item. But the only one datum in an item reduces the representativeness of the item. In addition to the lack of representativeness, there are many cases that the uniformity of the item such as flatness of panel is absolutely important. In these cases, we have to measure several spots in an item. Also the nonconforming judgment to an item is mainly due to the range not due to the standard variation or the shift from the specifications. To imply the uniformity concept to the process capability index, we should consider only the variation in an item. It is the within subgroup variation. When the universe is composed of several subgroups, the sample standard deviation is the sum of the within subgroup variation and the between subgroup variation. So the range R which represents only the within subgroup variation is the much better measure than that of the sample standard deviation. In general, a subgroup contains a couple of individual items. But in our cases, a subgroup is an item and R is the difference between the maximum and the minimum among the measured data in an item. Even though our object is a single process index, causing by the subgroups, its analytic structure looks like a system process capability index. In this paper we propose a new process capability index considering the representativeness and uniformity.
The engine-out flow is highly transient and hot, and may place tremendous thermal and inertial loads on a closed-coupled catalyst. Therefore, time-dependent and detailed flow and thermal field simulation may be crucial. The aim of this study is to develop combined chemical reaction and multi-dimensional fluid dynamic mathematical model and to study the effect of unsteady pulsating thermal and flow characteristics on thermal reliability of closed-coupled catalyst. The effect of cell density on the conversion performance under real running condition is also investigated. Unlike previous studies, the present study focuses on coupling between the problems of pulsating flow pattern and catalyst thermal response and conversion efficiency. The results are expressed in terms of temporal evolution of flow, pollutant and temperature distribution as well as transient characteristics of conversion efficiency. Fundamental understanding of the flow and thermal phenomena of closed-coupled catalyst under real running condition is presented. It is shown that instants of significantly low values of flow uniformity and conversion efficiency exist during exhaust blowdown and the temporal varaition of flow uniformity is very similar in pattern to one of conversion efficiency. It is also found that the location of hot spot in monolith is directly affected by transient flow pattern in closed-coupled catalyst.
a-Si solar cell has relatively dominant drift current when compared with crystalline solar cell due to the high internal electric field. Such drift current make an impact on the PV module in the local shading. In this paper, the a-Si PV module output characteristics of shading effects was approached in terms of process condition, because of the different deposition layer of thin film lead to rising the resistance. We suggested design condition to ensure the long-term durability of the module with regard to the degradation factors such as hot spot by analyzing the module specification. The result shows a remarkable difference on module uniformity for each shading position. In addition, the unbalanced power loss due to power mismatch of each module could intensify the degradation.
Purpose: This study aims to identify SUV, SNR, spatial resolution, and axial uniformity under the same reconstruction conditions and to find out the differences between equipment models. Materials and Methods: The equipment was GE's Discovery 600, 710, IQ, MI(GE Healthcare, USA), and the Phantom used ACR(American College of Radiology) Flangeless Esser Phantom and PET/SPECT Performance Phantom. The PET/SPECT Performance Phantom injected 18F-FDG at a concentration of 3.8 kBq/mL, and the ACR Flangeless Esser Phantom made the conditions for Hot Spot and Background activity for 4 : 1. Image evaluation was compared and evaluated for SUV, SNR, spatial resolution, and axial uniformity with the same reconstruction that added SharpIR of VPHD. Results: The SUVmax showed a difference up to 4.6% with an average of 2.71, 2.35, 1.89, and 1.43 from Hot Spot 1 to 4, and the SUVmean showed a difference up to 4.7% with 2.06, 1.75, 1.49, and 1.27. There was a difference up to 5% between equipment, and there was no significant difference between both SUVmax and SUVmean. SNR showed a difference up to 0.04 with an average of 0.37, 0.26, 0.18, and 0.11. FWHM showed a difference up to 0.27. Lastly, COV of axial uniformity was up to 0.018. Conclusion: SUV showed differences within 5% between equipment and showed no significant difference. This is considered to be used as basic data that can be used for the development and replacement of equipment because it has the advantage of being able to observe with a large number of equipment.
In this paper, in order to achieve slim and light liquid crystal display, we examine the optical conditions that can obtain uniform light with higher optical efficiency over whole light guide plate (LGP) through simulation. Furthermore, to overcome the issues of hot spot in front of red, green, and blue light emitting diodes (RGB LEDs) source and non-uniform color mixing, we propose four shaped color mixing bars tied up with the LGP and check the optical characteristics of the LGP with them by simulation. Consequently, we could know the optical conditions of improving optical efficiency and optical uniformity in the LGP through the optical design. Also we confirmed that the issues of the hot spot and non-uniform color mixing in edge type LED could be solved by using the ${\bigwedge}$-shaped window color mixing bar.
To realize uniform side pumping of solar lasers and improve their output power, a solar concentrating system based on off-axis parabolic mirrors is proposed. Four identical off-axis parabolic mirrors with focal length of 1,000 mm are toroidally arranged as the primary concentrator. Four two-dimensional compound parabolic concentrators (2D-CPCs) are designed as a secondary concentrator to further compress the focused spot induced by the parabolic mirrors, and the focused light is then homogenized by four rectangular diffusers and provides uniform pumping for a laser-crystal rod to achieve solar laser emission. Simulation results show that the solar power received by the laser rod, uniformity of the light spot, and output power of the solar laser are 7,872.7 W, 98%, and 351.8 W respectively. This uniform pumping configuration and concentrator design thus provide a new means for developing high-power side-pumped solid-state solar lasers.
The effect of the M-window color mixing bar on the characteristics of color mixing and hot spots in the edge-lit backlight employing red (R), green (G), blue (G) light emitting diodes (LED) were studied in terms of the structure of the M-window color mixing bar. The rays from RGB LEDs entering the M-window bar were mixed by internal reflection and scattering inside the M-window bar so that the hot spots and color separation were minimized. The M-window bar was designed and fabricated and the simulation results are matched quite well to experimental data.

Plastic LCDs have remarkable advantages as compared to glass LCDs, but there still exist reliability issue. Regarding the reliability issue of plastic LCDs, we investigated the phenomena of dark spots that often occurred in plastic LCDs. It was recognized that dark spots are mainly caused by air bubbles that are induced from outside of LCD panel due to cell volume change with external stress and incomplete encapsulation. We have found that cell gap uniformity, spacer density and size and film deformation are important factors influencing dark spot behavior. In this paper, we discuss the phenomena and origin of dark spots in plastic LCDs

Vertical Colour Selection (VCS) is an option for slim CRTs with increased sharpness and brightness. The direction of self-convergence of the DY is changed to vertical in order to obtain better spot uniformity, but the line scan direction remains horizontal. Hence, no video conversion is needed, contrary to transposed scan. In this paper we address two issues: First, there is a high risk of moire, since the scan lines and the phosphor stripes are parallel. We propose a feedback mechanism guiding the electron beams towards the middle of the mask slots. As positive side effects, the brightness is improved and the shadow mask can be made of a cheap type of steel. Secondly, VCS deflection coils have to satisfy different requirements than coils in ordinary CRTs. We discuss the design rules for self-convergent VCS coils and present simulation results.
