  • Herein, electromagnetic shielding structures to reduce the external noise coupling to printed spiral coils (PSCs) and a design method for improving the bandwidth of shielded PSCs have been proposed. It has been demonstrated that the bandwidth of shielded PSCs is limited due to the parasitic capacitance between the coils and the shielding structures and is confirmed by the transfer function simulation of the shielded PSCs with a transmission line as the radio-frequency interference noise source. A design method for the bandwidth improvement of the shielded PSCs has been proposed based on the equivalent circuit model analysis and the case studies depending on PSC designs with a three-dimensional field simulation. With the design method, an optimized shielded PSC design has been presented and successfully confirmed by experimental verification in that the optimized design results in a significant bandwidth improvement.

  • Energy harvesting from the environment has been of great interest as a standalone power source of wireless sensor nodes for ubiquitous sensor networks (USN). There are several power generating methods such as thermal gradients, solar cell, energy produced by human action, mechanical vibration energy, and so on. Most of all, mechanical vibration is easily accessible and has no limitation of weather and environment of outdoor or indoor. In particular, the piezoelectric energy harvesting from ambient vibration sources has attracted attention because it has a relative high power density comparing with other energy scavenging methods. Through recent advances in low power consumption RF transmitters and sensors, it is possible to adopt a micro-power energy harvesting system realized by MEMS technology for the system-on-chip. However, the MEMS energy harvesting system hassome drawbacks such as a high natural frequency over 300 Hz and a small power generation due to a small dimension. To overcome these limitations, we devised a novel power generator with a spiral spring structure. In this case, the energy harvester has a lower natural frequency under 200 Hz than a normal cantilever structure. Moreover, it has higher an energy conversion efficient because shear mode ($d_{15}$) is much larger than 33 mode ($d_{33}$) and the energy conversion efficiency is proportional to the piezoelectric constant (d). We expect the spiral type MEMS power generator would be a good candidate as a standalone power generator for USN.

  • This paper is related to the improvement of efficiency for high performance centrifugal pumps by reducing leakage loss, which is achieved by applying the grooved seal as a non-contact seal to the pumps. Various combinations of grooved seal types, including the spiral and the parallel groove in the rotor and/or in the stator, were tested by the experiment. And the corresponding hydraulic performance and the magnitude of axial thrust were measured and calculated for ten cases. From the results, the type with the spiral groove(spiral angle : $0.98^{\circ}$) in both the rotor and the stator was found to be most effective. In this case, the head and the efficiency were improved from the original design by 2.1% and 2.3% respectively at design capacity($340m^3/h$), and the axial thrust was decreased by 10%.

  • This study proposes the evolution model of emerging media platform including smart media (M-IPTV, Smart TV) and IPTV, through a spiral evolution model based on the theory of the exploration & the exploitation. Authors suppose that the IP media evolved from IPTV technology, evolution of which has come through the development model of serial circular process. For explanation of this evolution, we propose the research model integrating the spiral model and the exploration & exploitation theory. Researchers define the smart media as the evolved media from IPTV, through this proposed model. We expect this model to be the theoretical base of media regulation and setting direction of future media service. Thus, this research are summed up as follows. To begin with, we classify the evolutionary stage of IPTV from the view points of service feature, regulation frame and technological characters. Secondly, we organize and confirm the research model of IPTV evolution through case analysis of the 3 cycles of each evolutionary stage. As a result, discussion of this study helps understanding mobile IP media and smart media as a post IPTV and leads the solution of various regulation issues and the development of the innovative media service and content. In addition, it can guide the government for the evolutionary direction to promote the media and the content industry.

  • The vulnerability of urban disasters is increased with the rapid urbanization and industrialization, and the extreme rainfall event is increased due to the global climate change. Urban inundation is also increased due to the extreme rainfall event beyond the capacity limit of facility for the damage prevention. The underground detention vault and the underground drain tunnel are rapidly being utilized to prevent urban inundation. Therefore, the hydraulic review and design analysis of the inlet of the underground facility are important. In this study, the water level of the approach flow according to the inflow discharge is measured and the flow characteristic of the inlet (tangential and spiral) is analyzed. For the spiral inlet, the multi-stage is introduced at the bottom of the inlet to improve the inducing vortex flow at low discharge conditions. In case of the tangential inlet, the discharging efficiency is decreased rapidly with hydraulic jump in the high flow discharge. The rising ratio of the water level in the multi-stage spiral inlet is higher than the tangential inlet, but the stable discharging efficiency is maintained at low and high discharge conditions. And the empirical formula of water level-flow discharge is derived in order to utilize inlets used in this study.

  • Simulation results of WRF for the case of typhoon 'Rusa' were analyzed, comparing with observed data especially forjavascript:confirm_mark('abe', '1'); the Gangneung area around to examine its ability in numerical simulation. From the hourly precipitation time series, two peaks were found at Gangneung and Daegwallyeong, while only one peak was found from those of inland regions else. Especially, for the Yeongdong region, the first peak was directly related to spiral bands generated in front of the typhoon. Convective cells that were developed within the spiral bands moved to the eastern coastal area from the sea so that local heavy rainfall occurred in the Yeongdong region. The second peak was mainly related to the accompanying rain band of typhoon itself, topographic effect and the convergence near Gangneung area. Precipitation in Gangneung was simulated as much as about 30% of observed one. The main reason of this result came from a poor representation of wind directions in Gangneung area of WRF model. Observed wind direction was northwesterly but simulated one was nearly easterly in the area. This might shift a local heavy rainfall area downstream to the mountain area rather than the coastal area.

  • NGC 4522 is a spiral galaxy located in the Virgo cluster which appears to be undergoing active ram pressure stripping due to the intracluster medium (ICM). What makes this galaxy special is the extraplanar CO gas, some of which coincides with the extraplanar $H{\alpha}$ patches. As one of the few cases where the interstellar molecular gas is thought to have been pushed out from the stellar disk by the ICM, this galaxy provides an opportunity to study the impact of ICM pressure on the dense/star forming gas and its fate in the extraplanar space after stripping. In order to probe detailed molecular gas properties inside and outside the stellar disk and the associated star formation activities, we have observed NGC 4522 in 12CO (1-0) and 13CO (1-0) using the ALMA. We have targeted two regions, one around the center of the galaxy and one centered on the peak of the extraplanar CO, detecting both lines in both regions. Particularly, this is the first case where 13CO gas has been detected outside the stellar disk in a galaxy undergoing ram pressure stripping. In this work, we present preliminary results from the ALMA observations and discuss the evolution of molecular gas properties and star formation activities inside and outside the stellar disk.

  • An innovative spiral variable-section capillary model is established for piping critical hydraulic gradient of cohesion-less soils causing water/mud inrush in tunnels. The relationship between the actual winding seepage channel and grain-size distribution, porosity, and permeability is established in the model. Soils are classified into coarse particles and fine particles according to the grain-size distribution. The piping critical hydraulic gradient is obtained by analyzing starting modes of fine particles and solving corresponding moment equilibrium equations. Gravities, drag forces, uplift forces and frictions are analyzed in moment equilibrium equations. The influence of drag force and uplift force on incipient motion is generally expounded based on the mechanical analysis. Two cases are studied with the innovative capillary model. The critical hydraulic gradient of each kind of sandy gravels with a bimodal grain-size-distribution is obtained in case one, and results have a good agreement with previous experimental observations. The relationships between the content of fine particles and the critical hydraulic gradient of seepage failure are analyzed in case two, and the changing tendency of the critical hydraulic gradient is accordant with results of experiments.

  • In recent, recycling of plastic material has became a major issue due to the landfills and environmental problem. This study investigated fluidity of thermoplastic vulcanizate(TPV), which is for automobile component parts such as weather strip in order to replace ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM). So, using the spiral flow test mold and panel cover mold, we conducted an experiment on fluidity of TPV with injection molding. As results of injection molding experiment, the recycled TPV's flow length was a little bit longer than virgin TPV and a case of panel cover, the filled weight was almost same quantity.
