  • A novel Er(III) complex with oxydiacetate and 1,10-phenanthroline was synthesized and its structure and luminescence properties were characterized. The complex of $[Er(ODA){\cdot}(phen){\cdot}4H_2O]^+$ crystallizes in the monoclinic space group $P2_1$/n with a = 12.216(4) ${\AA}$, b = 16.680(2) ${\AA}$, c = 12.627(3) ${\AA}$, ${\beta}=108.30(2)^{\circ}$, V = 2442.7(11) ${\AA}^3$, Z = 4 and ${\rho}=1.841 g/cm^3$. When the complex is excited at the He-Cd 325-nm line, it produces two broad bands spanning the regions 350-650 nm and 1200-1650 nm. The emission band of the complex is characterized by a series of spectral dips in the visible emission profile. The complex exhibits sensitized near- IR emission via two kinds of energy transfers from phen to Er(III): nonradiative and radiative energy transfers.

  • Stability characteristics of hyperbolic reaction-diffusion equations with a reversible Brusselator model are investigated as an extension of the previous work. Intensive stability analysis is performed for three important parameters, Nrd, β and Dx, where Nrd is the reaction-diffusion number which is a measure of hyperbolicity, β is a measure of reversibility of autocatalytic reaction and Dx is a diffusion coefficient of intermediate X. Especially, the dependence on Nrd of stability exhibits some interesting features, such as hyperbolicity in the small Nrd region and parabolicity in the large Nrd region. The hyperbolic reaction-diffusion equations are solved numerically by a spectral method which is modified and adjusted to hyperbolic partial differential equations. The numerical method gives good accuracy and efficiency even in a stiff region in the case of small Nrd, and it can be extended to a two-dimensional system. Four types of solution, spatially homogeneous, spatially oscillatory, spatio-temporally oscillatory and chaotic can be obtained. Entropy productions for reaction are also calculated to get some crucial information related to the bifurcation of the system. At the bifurcation point, entropy production changes discontinuously and it shows that different structures of the system have different modes in the dissipative process required to maintain the structure of the system. But it appears that magnitude of entropy production in each structure give no important information related for states of system itself.

  • A novel power amplifier for a polar transmitter is proposed to achieve better spectral performance for a wideband envelope signal. In the proposed scheme, 2-bit sigma-delta (${\Sigma}{\Delta}$) modulation of the envelope signal is introduced, and the power amplifier configuration is modified in a binary form to accommodate the 2-bit digitized envelope signals. The 2-bit ${\Sigma}{\Delta}$ modulator lowers the noise of the envelope signal by fine quantization and thus enhances the spectral property of the RF signal. The Ptolemy simulation results of the proposed structure show that the spectral noise is reduced by 10 dB in a full transmit band of the EDGE system. The dynamic range is also enhanced. Since the performance is improved without increasing the over-sampling ratio, this technique is best suited for wireless communication with high data rates.

  • A numerical procedure is described for simultaneously predicting the motion and structural responses of tension leg platforms (TLPs) in multi-directional irregular waves. The developed numerical approach is based on a combination of a three dimensional source distribution method, the finite element method for structurally treating the space frame elements and a spectral analysis technique of directional waves. The spectral description for the linear responses of a structure in the frequency domain is sufficient to completely define the responses. This is because both the wave inputs and the responses are stationary Gaussian ran dom process of which the statistical properties in the amplitude domain are well known. The hydrodynamic interactions among TLP members, such as columns and pontoons, are included in the motion and structural analysis. The effect of wave directionality has been pointed out on the first order motion, tether forces and structural responses of a TLP in multi-directional irregular waves.

  • The detection of jovian hydrogen-hydrogen dimers through the clear telluric 2-micron window(Kim et al. 1995, Trafton et al. 1997( suggests possibility to detect noble gases in the form of dimer with hydrogen in jovian atmospheres. Since noble noble gases do not have spectral structures in the infrared, it has been difficult to derive their abundances in the atmospheres of jovian planets. If there is a significant component of noble gases other than helium in the jovian atmospheres. it might be detected through its dimer spectrum with hydrogen molecule. The relatively sharp spectral structures of hydrogen-argon and hydrogen-neon dimers compared with those of hydrogen-hydrogen dimers are useful for the detection, if an adequate signal-to-noise (S/N) is obtained. If we use a large telescope, such as the Keck telescope, with a long exposure time (>24 hours), then $H_2-Ar$ spectral structure may be detected.

  • The paper deals with the applications of spectral finite element method to the dynamic analysis of framed foundations supporting high speed machines. Comparative performance of approximate dynamic stiffness methods formulated using static stiffness and lumped or consistent or average mass matrices with the exact spectral finite element for a three dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam element is presented. The convergence of response computed using mode superposition method with the appropriate dynamic stiffness method as the number of modes increase is illustrated. Frequency proportional discretisation level required for mode superposition and approximate dynamic stiffness methods is outlined. It is reiterated that the results of exact dynamic stiffness method are invariant with reference to the discretisation level. The Eigen-frequencies of the system are evaluated using William-Wittrick algorithm and Sturm number generation in the $LDL^T$ decomposition of the real part of the dynamic stiffness matrix, as they cannot be explicitly evaluated. Major's method for dynamic analysis of machine supporting structures is modified and the plane frames are replaced with springs of exact dynamic stiffness and dynamically flexible longitudinal frames. Results of the analysis are compared with exact values. The possible simplifications that could be introduced for a typical machine induced excitation on a framed structure are illustrated and the developed program is modified to account for dynamic constraint equations with a master slave degree of freedom (DOF) option.

  • Two new benzimidazolyl-containing complexes have been synthesized by reactions of $Cu^{II}$ salts and 1,2-bis(benzimidazolyl) benzene ($H_2bbbz$) with two different dicarboxylate ligands. When phthalate acid ($H_2pt$) was employed as secondary ligand, a 0D molecular complex Cu$(H_2bbbz)(pt){\cdot}(H_2pt)$ (1)was furnished and when the secondary ligand was instead by a linear bridging ligand of terephthalic acid ($H_2tp$) a 1D zipper-like coordination polymer $[Cu(H_2bbbz)(tp){\cdot}2(C_2H_5OH){\cdot}H_2O]_n$ (2) was obtained, suggesting the structure-direction effect of the secondary dicarbxylate ligand. The preliminary investigation on the spectral properties of the complexes was also presented.

  • Fundus images can reflect ocular diseases and systemic diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. Thus, research on fundus-detection equipment is of great importance. The fundus camera has been widely used as a kind of noninvasive detection equipment. Most existing devices can only obtain two-dimensional (2D) retinal-image information, yet the fundus of the human eye also has spectral characteristics. The fundus has many pigments, and their different distributions in the eye lead to dissimilar tissue penetration for light waves, which can reflect the corresponding fundus structure. To obtain more abundant information and improve the detection level of equipment, a snapshot nonmydriatic fundus imaging spectral system, including fundus-imaging spectrometer and illumination system, is studied in this paper. The system uses a microlens array to realize snapshot technology; information can be obtained from only a single exposure. The system does not need to dilate the pupil. Hence, the operation is simple, which reduces its influence on the detected object. The system works in the visible and near-infrared bands (550-800 nm), with a volume less than 400 mm × 120 mm × 75 mm and a spectral resolution better than 6 nm.

  • This study identifies efficient earthquake intensity measures (IMs) for seismic performances and fragility evaluations of the reactor containment building (RCB) in the advanced power reactor 1400 (APR1400) nuclear power plant (NPP). The computational model of RCB is constructed using the beam-truss model (BTM) for nonlinear analyses. A total of 90 ground motion records and 20 different IMs are employed for numerical analyses. A series of nonlinear time-history analyses are performed to monitor maximum floor displacements and accelerations of RCB. Then, probabilistic seismic demand models of RCB are developed for each IM. Statistical parameters including coefficient of determination (R2), dispersion (i.e. standard deviation), practicality, and proficiency are calculated to recognize strongly correlated IMs with the seismic performance of the NPP structure. The numerical results show that the optimal IMs are spectral acceleration, spectral velocity, spectral displacement at the fundamental period, acceleration spectrum intensity, effective peak acceleration, peak ground acceleration, A95, and sustained maximum acceleration. Moreover, weakly related IMs to the seismic performance of RCB are peak ground displacement, root-mean-square of displacement, specific energy density, root-mean-square of velocity, peak ground velocity, Housner intensity, velocity spectrum intensity, and sustained maximum velocity. Finally, a set of fragility curves of RCB are developed for optimal IMs.
