  • Utilizing a unique capability of AKARI that allows deep spectroscopy at $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$, we performed a spectroscopy study of more than 200 quasars through one of the AKARI mission programs, QSONG (Quasar Spectroscopic Observation with NIR Grism). QSONG targeted 155 high redshift (3.3 < z < 6.42) quasars and 90 low redshift active galactic nuclei (0.002 < z < 0.48). In order to provide black hole mass estimates based on the rest-frame optical spectra, the high redshift part of QSONG is designed to detect the $H{\alpha}$ line and the rest-frame optical spectra of quasars at z > 3.3. The low redshift part of QSONG is geared to uncover the rest-frame $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$ spectral features of active galactic nuclei to gain useful information such as the dust-extinction-free black hole mass estimators based on the Brackett lines and the temperatures of the hot dust torus. We outline the program strategy, and present some of the scientific highlights from QSONG, including the detection of the $H{\alpha}$ line from a quasar at z > 4.5 which indicates a rigorous growth of black holes in the early universe, and the $Br{\beta}$-based black hole mass estimators and the hot dust temperatures (~ 1100 K) of low redshift AGNs.

  • The growing application and the numerous qualities of induction motors (1M) in industrial processes that require high security and reliability levels has led to the development of multiple methods for early fault detection. However, various faults can occur, such as stator short-circuits and rotor failures. Traditionally the diagnosis machine is done through a sinusoidal power supply, in the present paper we study experimentally the effects of the rotor failures, such as broken rotor bars in function of the ac supplying, the load and show the impact of the converter from diagnosis of the machine. The technique diagnosis used is based on the spectral analysis of stator currents or stator voltages respectively according to the types of induction motor ac supplying. So, four different ac supplying are considered: ${\odot}$ the IM is directly by the balanced three-phase network voltage source, ${\odot}$ the IM is fed by a sinusoidal current source given the controlled by hysteresis, ${\odot}$ the IM is fed (in open loop) by a scalar control imposing through ratio V/f=constant, ${\odot}$ the IM is controlled through a vector control using space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique inverter with an outer speed loop.

  • Combing through entire video files for the purpose of recognizing and retrieving matching movies requires much time and memory space. Instead, most current similar movie-matching methods choose to analyze only a part of each movie's video-image information. Yet, these methods still share a critical problem of erroneously recognizing as being different matching videos that have been altered only in resolution or converted merely with a different codecs. This paper proposes an audio-information-based search algorithm by which similar movies can be identified. The proposed method prepares and searches through a database of movie's spectral peak information that remains relatively steady even with changes in the bit-rate, codecs, or sample-rate. The method showed a 92.1% search success rate, given a set of 1,000 video files whose audio-bit-rate had been altered or were purposefully written in a different codec.

  • In this paper, we propose the frequency diversity scheme for performance improvement of a OFDM system without decreasing the spectral efficiency. In the proposed scheme, information bit is encoded to symbol by a simple procedure, and the encoded symbol is transmitted through the two lowest correlated sub-channels with the particular phase difference. At the receiver, a frequency diversity gain is obtained by a simple signal processing. We also suggest optimum phase difference value to minimize the performance degradation which resulted from a phase difference estimation error and bit/symbol mapping method to minimize BER. As results, at the point of performance improvement, the proposed scheme is excellent even though it requires a little increase of system complexity because of an additional encoding and decoding. In particular, we confirmed through computer simulation that on the same channel environment and bandwidth efficiency, the 27x/1Rx STBC-OFDM system adopting the proposed frequency diversity scheme outperforms the conventional 27x/1Rx STBC-OFDM system performance

  • The complex interactions of climate, topography, geology, biota and hwnan activities result in the land cover patterns, which are impacted by natural disturbances such as fire, earthquake and flood. Natural disturbances disrupt ecosystem communities and change the physical environment, thereby generating a new landscape. Community ecologists believe that disturbance is critical in determining how diverse ecological systems function. Fires were once a major agent of disturbance in the North American tall grass prairies, African savannas, and Australian bush. The major focus of this research was to develop stochastic model of spatial process of disturbance or spatial events and simulate the process based on the developed model and it was applied to the fire arrival process in the Great Victoria Desert of Australia, where wildfires generate a mosaic of patches of habitat at various stages of post-fire succession. For this research, Landsat Multi-Spectral Scanner(MSS) data covering the period from 1972 to 1994 were utilized. Fire arrival process is characterized as a spatial point pattern irregularly distributed within a region of space. Here, nonhomogeneous planar Poisson process is proposed as a model for the fire arrival process and rejection sampling thinning the homogeneous Poisson process is used for its simulation.

  • In the layered medium, the Sommerfeld integral must be evaluated to calculate a space domain Green's function. The real axis integration method provides stable and accurate results over wide ranges of the observation distance and the singnal frequency. But this method has the in efficiency of approximation when the field point z is changed. Also, as the amplitude of z increases, the change of the spectral domain function is more rapidly. Therefore, the approximation is difficult when z becomes larger. In this paper, we propose a method to calculate an accurate closed-form Green's function for microstrip structure by using the closed-loop integration path.

  • Self-consistent mathematical model of the exotic object OTJ 071126+440405= CSS 081231:071126+440405 is discussed. The system was discovered as a polar at the New year night 31.12.2008/01.01.2009 by D.Denisenko (VSNET Circ), and we have initiated an international campaign of photometric and polarimetric observations of this object (totally -80 runs in Ukraine, Korea, Slovakia, Finland, USA) as a part of the "Inter-Longitude Astronomy" (ILA) project on monitoring of variable stars of different classes (Andronov et al., 2003). Here we present the geometrical and physical model of the system in the low luminosity state and in the intermediate luminosity state as well as in the high luminosity state. As the system is of -20 mag at minimum, no spectral observations were made to determine parameters of the red dwarf. From the statistical relationship, the mass of the red dwarf is estimated to be -0.165 solar masses, for the white dwarf (from eclipse duration) - from 0.5 to 1.76 solar masses. As the system resembles ER UMa in some characteristics, the lower value may be assumed. The inclination of the system and other physical parameters are estimated. The object is an excellent laboratory to study multiple physical processes in the magnetic systems.

  • The vehicle interior noise caused by exterior fluid flow field is one of critical issues for product developers in a design stage. Especially, turbulence and vortex flow around A-pillar and side mirror affect vehicle interior noise through a side window. The reliable numerical prediction of the noise in a vehicle cabin due to exterior flow requires distinguishing between the aerodynamic (incompressible) and the acoustic (compressible) surface pressures as well as accurate computation of surface pressure due to this flow, since the transmission characteristics of incompressible and compressible pressure waves are quite different from each other. In this paper, effective signal processing technique is proposed to separate them. First, the exterior flow field is computed by applying computational aeroacoustics techniques based on the Lattice Boltzmann method. Then, the wavenumber-frequency analysis is performed for the time-space pressure signals in order to characterize pressure fluctuations on the surface of a vehicle side window. The wavenumber-frequency diagrams of the power spectral density shows clearly two distinct regions corresponding to the hydrodynamic and the acoustic components of the surface pressure fluctuations. Lastly, decomposition of surface pressure fluctuation into incompressible and compressible ones is successfully accomplished by taking the inverse Fourier transform on the wavenumber-frequency diagrams.

  • The binaural auditory system of human has the capability of differentiating the direction and distance of sound sources. This feature is well characterised in terms of the inter-aural intensity difference (IID), the inter-aural time difference (ITD) and/or the spectral shape difference (SSD) arising from the acoustic transfer of a sound source to the outer ears. This paper proposes an effective way of extracting the three sound perception factors (IID, ITD, SSD) from the head-related transfer functions (HRTF's) that depends on the direction and distance of the acoustic source from the listener. It includes the estimation method of the equivalent ITD and 1/3-octave band-based IID factors and their usage to locate a sound source in space. Subjective and objective tests were carried out to examine the effectiveness of the proposed methodology and its applicability to real sound systems. Those experimental results are illustrated in this paper.

  • Two diastereoisomers of cyclo(Pro-Tyr) have been synthesized simultaneously. The crystal structures and conformations of both cyclo($\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr) and a racemic mixture of cyclo($\small{D}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr) and cyclo($\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{D}$-Tyr), abbreviated as rac-cyclo($\small{D}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr/$\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{D}$-Tyr), have been determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study at low temperature. The crystals of rac-cyclo($\small{D}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr/$\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{D}$-Tyr) belong to orthorhombic space group $Pna2_1$ with a = 10.755 (1), b = 12.699 (1), c = 9.600 (1) ${\AA}$ and Z = 4. The tyrosine side chain is folded towards the diketopiperazine (DKP) ring. The DKP ring adopts a twist boat conformation with pseudo symmetry $C_{2v}$. The pyrrolidine ring has an envelope conformation with the N5, C4, C7 and C8 atoms in a plane. The crystal of rac-cyclo($\small{D}$-Pro-$\small{L}$-Tyr/$\small{L}$-Pro-$\small{D}$-Tyr) is stabilized by hydrogen bonds between amide N2-H2 and carbonyl oxygen O2 in the neighbor. The hydroxyl group of tyrosine residue is also hydrogen bonded to the oxygen of the carbonyl group of the DKP ring in the next molecule. The spectroscopic properties of both isomers are also described.
