  • In this paper, the vibration of a rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk on bearing supports is considered. It is assumed that the shaft has uniform, circular cross-section. Based on the Timoshenko-beam theory, the transverse displacements and slops in two lateral directions, the axial displacement, and the torsional deformation are considered. And flexible supports are used to analyse the bearings. A spectral element model is developed for the vibration analysis of the rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk, which is modeled by two shaft elements and a thin rigid disk element. The result of vibration analysis by finite element method is compared to the result of this research.

  • In this paper, the high-order spectral/boundary-element method is developed to calculate the 3-dimensional water waves generated by a submerged body. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear gravity waves can be simulated Tn time-domain. Three-dimensional free-surface flows generated by a submerged sphere which is moving under the free-surface are calculated. Through example calculations, nonlinear effects on free-surface profiles and hydrodynamic forces are shown. Comparisons with others' results show good agreements.

  • Spectral element method(SEM) has been recognized to provide accurate structural dynamic responses even at high frequency. The Duhamel's integral based SEM developed by the authors for the structures under dynamic distributed loads does not take into account the zero frequency effect and requires significant computational time due to the integration procedure of Duhamel's integral. Hence, in this paper, a new SEM algorithm is proposed. This new algorithm is based on the FEM-type procedure for the distributed loads and includes the zero frequency correction to improve the accuracy. Some numerical results are illustrated to prove the accuracy of present new SEM algorithm.

  • This study explores a coefficient-based seismic capacity assessment method with a special emphasis on low-rise masonry in-filled (MI) reinforced concrete (RC) buildings subjected to earthquake motion. The coefficient-based method without requiring any complicated finite element analysis is a simplified procedure to assess the maximum spectral acceleration capacity of buildings. This paper first compares the fundamental periods of MI RC structures obtained, respectively, from experimental period data and empirical period-height formulas. The coefficient-based method for low-rise masonry buildings is then calibrated by the published experimental results obtained from shaking table tests. The comparison of the experimental and estimated results indicates that the simplified coefficient-based method can provide good approximations of the maximum spectral accelerations at peak loads of the low-rise masonry reinforced concrete buildings if a proper set of drift factors and initial fundamental vibration periods of structures are used.

  • Determination of dynamic parameters of a structure such as predominant frequency and damping ratio is one of the most important subjects in dynamics of structures. Different methods are used to determine predominant frequency. These methods are different in the cost, implement accessibility, accuracy, speed, applicability in different conditions, simplicity of calculations and required data accessibility. Calculation of damping ratio by using common experimental procedures is very difficult and costly, then it is assumed as a constant value in most calculations. Microtremor measurements and using spectral ratio method to determine the predominant frequency and damping ratio of structure is of interest in recent years. In this paper, as a case study, the effects of retrofitting on structural dynamic parameters of two four-story buildings by using microtremor measurements and also finite element analysis, is investigated. The results of this study show that microtremor measurements can be utilized to assess the improvement of dynamic behavior of the retrofitted structure and the effectiveness of the method of retrofitting.

  • Exact dynamic stiffness model for a uniform straight pipeline conveying unsteady fluid is formulated from a set of fully coupled pipe-dynamic equations of motion, in which the fluid pressure and velocity of internal flow as well as the transverse and axial displacements of the pipeline are all treated as dependent variables. The accuracy of the dynamic stiffness model formulated herein is first verified by comparing its solutions with those obtained by the conventional finite element model. The spectral element analysis based on the present dynamic stiffness model is then conducted to investigate the effects of fluid parameters on the dynamics and stability of an example pipeline problem.

  • Numerical wave tank is a robust tool by which the nonlinear interactions between the body and the free-surface can be treated in time-domain. In this paper, a two-dimensional numerical wave tank based on the Spectral/Boundary-Element Method is developed, and applied successfully to the study of nonlinear wave diffraction around a submerged circular cylinder. Particularly, it is shown that the high-order wave components of significant wave height are developed in the lee-side of the cylinder and that these waves result in a negative drift force on the circular cylider.

  • A chaotic vibration isolation system is designed according to the chaotic vibration theory in this paper. The strong nonlinearity is generated by the system. Line spectra in the radiated noise maybe easily detected caused by marine vessels. It is Important to reduce the line spectra by improving the acoustic stealth of marine vessels. A multi-degree-freedom (MDF) nonlinear vibration isolation system (NVIS) system is setup by the experiment and finite element method. The model is established with finite element method. The results show that the behavior of the device gradually varies from period bifurcation into chaotic state and the line spectrum is changed from single spectral structure into broadband spectral structure. It is concluded that chaotic vibration isolation is preferable contrasted on line spectra isolation.
