  • Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are used to collect various data in environment monitoring applications. A spatial clustering may reduce energy consumption of data collection by partitioning the WSN into a set of spatial clusters with similar sensing data. For each cluster, only a few sensor nodes (samplers) report their sensing data to a base station (BS). The BS may predict the missed data of non-samplers using the spatial correlations between sensor nodes. ASAP is a representative data collection algorithm using the spatial clustering. It periodically reconstructs the entire network into new clusters to accommodate to the change of spatial correlations, which results in high message overhead. In this paper, we propose a new data collection algorithm, name EPDC (Energy-efficient Periodic Data Collection). Unlike ASAP, EPDC identifies a specific cluster consisting of many dissimilar sensor nodes. Then it reconstructs only the cluster into subclusters each of which includes strongly correlated sensor nodes. EPDC also tries to reduce the message overhead by incorporating a judicious probabilistic model transfer method. We evaluate the performance of EPDC and ASAP using a simulation model. The experiment results show that the performance improvement of EPDC is up to 84% compared to ASAP.

  • In order to investigate the spatial orientation of the spin vectors of galaxies in the Virgo cluster, we carried out a detailed identification of all the certain and possible member disk galaxies with four UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST) III a-j direct plates digitized by the Automated Plate Measuring System (APM). As a result, a relatively large and complete database with no selection effect of the member galaxies has been established. We provide the APM measured values of the position angle (P.A.) and diameters at the isophotal level of 24.5 $m_j / arcsec^2$. Based on this newly generated database, an initial study on the spatial orientation of the spin vectors of galaxies in the Virgo cluster is shown.

  • This study analyzed the relationship between spatial characteristics and heat waves in the distribution area of the elderly population in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do. For analysis, the Statistics Census data, the Ministry of Environment land cover, Landsat 8 surface temperature, and the Meteorological Agency's heat wave days data were used. The spatial characteristics of the distribution of the elderly population was classified into 5 types through K-mean cluster analysis considering the land use types. The characteristics of the elderly population by spatial type were higher in the urbanized type(cluster-3), but the proportion of the elderly population was higher in the agricultural and forest area types(cluster-1, cluster-2). In the characteristics of the surface temperature and the heat wave days, the surface temperature was the highest in the urban area, but heat wave days were the highest in the rural area. As a result of analyzing the heat wave characteristics according to the spatial type of the distribution area of elderly population, cluster-2 with the largest area in agricultural areas was highest at 15.95 days, and cluster-3 with a large area in urbanized types was the lowest at 9.41 days and 9.18 days. In other words, the elderly population living in rural areas is more exposed to heat waves than the elderly population living in urban areas, and the damage is expected to increase. The results of this study could be used as basic data to prepare various policy measures for effective management and prevention of vulnerable areas in summer.

  • This paper proposes DBSCAN-SI that is an algorithm for clustering with influences of spatial objects. DBSCAN-SI that is extended from existing DBSCAN and DBSCAN-W converts from non-spatial properties to the influences of spatial objects during the spatial clustering. It increases probability of inclusion to the cluster according to the higher the influences that is affected by the properties used in clustering and executes the clustering not only respect the spatial distances, but also volume of influences. For the perspective of specific property-centered, the clustering technique proposed in this paper can makeup the disadvantage of existing algorithms that exclude the objects in spite of high influences from cluster by means of being scarcely close objects around the cluster.

  • This study traces the growth and changes in the spatial distribution and characteristics of media cluster in Seoul by focusing on the co-evolution of film and TV production. To identify the spatial distribution and aggregation of film and broadcast TV production, we measure their spatial auto-correlation based on Moran's I and LISA, using the data from the Census on Establishments of the National Statistical Office. In addition, the eleven semi-structured interviews conducted with workers in the media industries, such as film crews and TV drama producers, help to clarify the complexity and dynamics of diverse factors that affect spatial distribution of media cluster. This multi-method study shows the increasing polycentricity of media cluster in the last decade. Gangnam, Mapo, Yeouido, Gangseo-Yeongdeungpo, and Seongsu have emerged as key hubs for media industries, particularly in light of changes in the transportation system and the real estate market. The finding indicates the co-evolution of film and broadcast TV production, demonstrating how the characteristics of the creative industry and metropolitan changes are intertwined with each other in shaping the geographical pattern of the media cluster.

  • This study provided a new research perspective for processing and analyzing AE data to evaluate rock failure. Cluster method and information entropy theory were introduced to investigate temporal and spatial correlation of acoustic emission (AE) events during the rock failure process. Laboratory experiments of granite subjected to compression were carried out, accompanied by real-time acoustic emission monitoring. The cumulative length and dip angle curves of single links were fitted by different distribution models and distribution functions of link length and directionality were determined. Spatial scale and directionality of AE event distribution, which are characterized by two parameters, i.e., spatial correlation length and spatial correlation directionality, were studied with the normalized applied stress. The entropies of link length and link directionality were also discussed. The results show that the distribution of accumulative link length and directionality obeys Weibull distribution. Spatial correlation length shows an upward trend preceding rock failure, while there are no remarkable upward or downward trends in spatial correlation directionality. There are obvious downward trends in entropies of link length and directionality. This research could enrich mathematical methods for processing AE data and facilitate the early-warning of rock failure-related geological disasters.

  • As the demand for environmental-friendly agricultural products continues to rise due to increased concerns regarding food safety and ecosystem conservation, it is becoming important to identify regions and spatial locations where environmental-friendly should be intensively established for production integration. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of environmental-friendly certified farms in Jeollanam-do, South Korea. Spatial statistical analysis based on Local Moran's I and Getis-Ord Gi* were used to identify spatial cluster characteristics and landscape indices were utilized to analyze spatial patterns of environmental-friendly certified farms. The results indicated that Haenam-gun, Gangjin-gun, Muan-gun, and Jindo-gun were identified as hotspots, while Muan-gun, Goheung-gun, and Jindo-gun exhibited high connectivity. This suggests that environmental-friendly certified farms in Muan-gun and Jindo-gun were clustered and closely connected to one another. Based on the results of the spatial distribution of environmental-friendly certified farms, areas belonging to the hotspot and with high connectivity should be managed as clustered districts to secure the foundation and system of environmental-friendly certified farms. Areas that belong to cold spots and have low connectivity should be preceded by measures to promote conversion to environmental-friendly agriculture. In addition, it is necessary to make it possible to create a large-scale cluster district through a long-term spatial planning strategy to expand the environmental-friendly certified farms. The findings of this study can provide quantitative data on policies and discussions for developing a model for rural spatial planning.

  • Social interest in the fine particulate matter has increased significantly since the 2010s, and various efforts have been made to reduce it through environmental plans and policies. To support such environmental planning, in this study, spatial cluster characteristics of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations were analyzed in the metropolitan area to identify high-risk areas spatially, and the correlation with local environmental characteristics was also confirmed. The PM2.5 concentration for the recent 5 years (2016-2020) was targeted, and representative spatial statistical methods Getis-Ord Gi* and Local Moran's I were applied. As a result of the analysis, the cluster form was different in Getis-Ord Gi* and Local Moran's I, but they show high similarity in direction, therefore complementary results could be obtained. In the high concentration period, the hotspot concentration of the Getis-Ord Gi* method increased, but in Local Moran's I, the HH region, the high concentration cluster, showed a decreasing trend. Hotspots of the Getis-Ord Gi* technique were prominent in the Pyeongtaek-Hwaseong and Yeoju-Icheon regions, and the HH cluster of Local Moran's I was located in the southwest, and the LL cluster was located in the northeast. As in the case of the metropolitan area, in the results of Seoul, there was a phenomenon of division between the northeast and southwest regions. The PM2.5 concentration showed a high correlation with the elevation, vegetation greenness and the industrial area ratio. During the high concentration period, the relation with vegetation greenness increased, and the elevation and industrial area ratio increased in the case of the annual average. This suggests that the function of vegetation can be maximized at a high concentration period, and the influence of topography and industrial areas is large on average. This characteristic was also confirmed in the basic statistics for each major cluster. The spatial clustering characteristics of PM2.5 can be considered in the national land and environmental plan at the metropolitan level. In particular, it will be effective to utilize the clustering characteristics based on the annual average concentration, which contributes to domestic emissions.
